"Only a Tiny Minority of Players Are Toxic"

Flash to KS··13 votes·2,003 views

I've read this statement before, and while I obviously don't know what the community is like on every server, I'm going to talk about at least a portion of it that I've interacted with.

First off, though, just for clarification: Why is this in Gameplay & Balance? Well, because this is an issue that does affect gameplay, and quite heavily at that. It is a core part of most if not all players' experience.

So, let's start with today. I've played at least four games so far, and in every one of them when I didn't do well, I was repeatedly flamed and insulted by at least two players on the team. And if it's not my ally team flaming me, it's the enemy team abusing all-chat by either being unsportsmanlike and thinking they are funny by saying things like "ez" and "nice flash" or flaming and hurling insults like "retarded" and "noob." It happens so often that I've lost count of how many games this has happened in. It's not fun when my team apparently focuses more on typing and flaming than playing the game itself and commenting on every single mistake I make. Yes, people sometimes have bad games. So what? Nobody is perfect, and it's not like my performance is going to improve if someone flames me.

And then there are the tens of games I've played in the last few months. In a lot of them, whenever I ganked a lane and it didn't work out/go well, I got flamed or received passive-aggressive comments like "nice gank," "nice help," "thx for help," etc.—and sometimes players spam these comments within a few minutes. That's not even the worst of it; sometimes I was raged at for running away from obviously lost team fights after at least two or three people had died. One of the most common occurrences is that two people, usually squishies, go into a team fight before the tanks even have a chance to engage, get blown up in a few seconds, and blame the rest of the team for running away from the fight. I've been on the receiving end of comments like "useless kassa report," "kassa only ks," and "useless tard," just for a few examples.

On another particularly... "remarkable" occasion, I mentioned that I was playing with my cousin, and the Vayne on our team said, "And you both have cancer, right?" This and the above are just a tiny sample of the things I've seen during my experience with League; they're not even the worst I've seen.

And no, "just mute them" is not an answer. Even if I do mute someone, it doesn't make their comments any less demoralizing or toxic. When people flame so much in a game, I just don't enjoy it anymore even if we end up winning it. I usually try not to respond and just report the offenders after the game, but the toxicity is really taking a lot of the fun out of this game for me. I've taken breaks before because of it, and it's always the same every time I come back.

Riot, I really enjoy League. Actually, I enjoy it so much that I've put up with the toxicity of this community for so long, but I can't help but wonder whether the toxicity only comes from a "tiny minority" of the community when I've run into so many ragers and toxic players in so many of my games. Something has to be done about this. Bring back the tribunal. Make the tribunal compliment the current system or vice versa. Promote players with a clean history to become in-game moderators so that they can spot toxic behavior in real time and deal with it accordingly. Whatever you do, leaving the community like this is certainly not the solution. It is making the League experience far less enjoyable for many of us who just want to play without fighting or flaming and commenting on every single mistake other players make or using all-chat to mock our opponents.

/(constructive) rant.

Alright, I recognize this is a real issue, but you are the Tumblr of league right now. I agree, you shouldn't be harassed, or insulted, but if you mess up a flash and someone comments "haha, nice flash" they aren't calling you bad, everyone messes it up once in a while, it's just funny when it happens. Same for ganks, if you roll into lane just after your teammate kills the enemy and they say "thanks for the help" they are calling you bad, that's just fun.

I'm not defending the guys who ask the other team to report you because you lost lane, I am defending all the people who are so bold as to act friendly in this game which you group in with the guys who just want to be mean. Like, when you fall down and your friend laughs at you, they are harassing you and making you feel bad about it, they are encouraging you to own it and laugh at yourself so that you don't feel bad. Everyone does it, so you shouldn't be ashamed when you do it.

If you can't laugh at yourself when you fail a flash, or smite, or make an obvious mistake, you need to learn to do that. Yes, if it's a mistake you don't think of as a mistake and you get made fun of for it that can be frustrating, but if you know you fucked up just own it. If I steal a kill by accident while trying to help, I'll make the joke "It was all me :p" or "I earned it :p"

Try it out, when you are playing with friends- when you make a mistake, call attention to it. Not by going FUCK ME OMG I HATE THIS GAME! but by joking that you meant to do it, they know you didn't, but the light hearted atmosphere is just better than one where no one wants to say anything to you because you'll cuss them out for questioning you.

This doesn't fix the problem when it is other people harassing you, or throwing out insults, but if you manage to take things a little lighter, you might notice a lot of what you think is people flaming you is them trying to be sociable.

I'm not talking about lighthearted ribbing. I actually have no problem with that and can take a joke. What I have a problem with is when a player, either on our team or the enemy one, who has been acting toxic all game says something like that. It becomes obvious that they are not joking; they either intend to mock or harass another player, and that's where the toxicity comes in.

I agree. Personally, I feel like the league community just has thin skin sometimes and can't take a joke. Someone saying EZ after barely escaping is obviously a joke. Calling someone useless and retarded isn't a joke, that's abuse.

Dude, I don't really think the people who wished for the death of my entire family after being killed in first blood are encouraging me to take ownership of anything. Just saying.

Also, THIS.

It depends on your definition of toxic.

Riots definition (and they can correct me if I'm wrong) is usually along the lines of racial, sexist, homophobic, and/or death threats. Things that are extreme. Things that are very uncomfortable and anyone (that's sane) would agree they have no place in this or any game.

The general players definition falls more loosely, including the above, as well as name-calling, mockery, yelling, and "quitters attitude."^ Things that are inappropriate, but not to the extreme. No, those behaviors should not be considered normal, or acceptable. But according to Riot, that's not really the level of toxicity their aiming to eliminate. However, these are behaviors that make the game less enjoyable.

I do hope Riot sees the "player moderator" and the tribunal bit that was mentioned here. Those are both excellent ideas. I still wonder if I should type anything into the comment section when reporting, as I feel it is no longer viewed by anyone.

Nonetheless, I have seen some improvement in my three years on this game. I do hope Riot continues to improve this game, and that we find ways to improve this community.

Best of luck Wandering Archer ^_^

^ quitters attitude: the "gg" right after FB is given, right after losing a teamfight, right after losing a turret, that's spoken after every death. The quitters attitude that only serves to drag down the team. In that manner, it is toxic in its own way. Not to be confused with the person who looks and says, "hey, I see we're down in objectives and kills by a good amount, and losing teamfights; it might be gg."

If you're doing poorly two games in a row, much less four, take a break. Also, welcome to the internet. If you have a weak constitution I strongly suggest proactively leaving or learning to ignore.

"hey you have 2 options if you don't like people being toxic as shit in this game. ignore or leave"

that's the problem. edgy douchebags on the internet think its their god-given right to be a bastard, and if you dont like it you can leave or ignore.

i really hope a calamity falls from the skies and kills every single person on this planet. because the internet is a great representation of the human race. and its full of pieces of shit.

  • Edgy motherfuckers

  • I hope a calamity kills everyone

See, hypocrisy is such an ugly thing.

It's not about being a god-given right, it's actually a very simple concept. Riot looks into it, and looks into it hard. Ignoring the flamers and ragers ensures that they are alone, are rambling to the air, and it's much easier for the system to detect and ban them. If you don't ignore them, if you respond and let yourself be affected, you're giving them what they want (Someone who's making a lot of noise, which makes it look you know you're playing like shit and attempting to defend yoursef - shitty logic, true, but when people are upset their logic isn't the most sound) AND you're ensuring any automated system has a harder time detecting the real flamer. By complaining here you're making sure the people who flame and rage feel like they're attacked, which in our tribal minds convinces us we're on the right - Underdog worship and all.

So, in short, stop being a short tempered, incredibly hypocritical individual and realize exactly what they mean by "ignore or leave": Be enough of a mature freaking adult to realize that sometimes, no matter how bad it feels, the best winning move is not to play, and ignoring during the moment it happens, on the long run will make the community better. If you can't realize this, then do what's best for you and go away, because feeding and replying to "trolls" will only make them stronger

While I'll admit I haven't read your whole post. I highly doubt anyone has played with majority of the people who play this game. You have to remember that this is the most popular online game. Millions of people play this game. To say that only a small majority of the people who play this is toxic is probably true. If you take the rough estimate that 1million people play this game. Then 1-2% of that is about 10-20 thousand. You probably don't even play with half that number of people in your game. So if anything you'll see a toxic person at least once a day. But since that is a rough estimate it's probably more. Let alone with the fact that people have smurf accounts.

All in all everyone has a different opinion on what a toxic person is. Riot does have a general idea and punishes people who follow their guidelines of being toxic so just report and hopefully they get ban!

You are too sensitive to be playing a competitive online game.

TLDR; There are probably a lot more toxic/negative games than there are toxic/negative players because there are a lot of factors that impact what's considered toxic, and how that shows up in a game.

I'd say the issue of how only a small % of community is classified as toxic is three fold:

  1. The players classified as toxic are very negative and insulting in the vast majority of their games. Study of crime finds that a huge % of crime is committed by a small % of chronic offenders. I have no idea why it takes so long to punish players like this, but they will skew the data to show they are more negative than the majority of players and make the "toxic" percentage much lower.

  2. The difference between being "toxic" and just someone being a dick is a real thing. I would hypothesize that a much larger % of the community lacks social skills and isn't necessarily someone you would want to play with but isn't defined as toxic. If you consider it in terms of what would significantly exacerbate major depression symptoms, while anything that is just rude but would be shrugged off and maybe just muted by someone without the added difficulty of clinical symptoms then a large number of unpleasant behaviors seen in games suddenly get ruled out and those players aren't toxic.

  3. Players who aren't consistently negative but have a game or two where they act out. I'm pretty positive generally because morale helps win games, and half the people who I duo w/ after adding them from a good game I drop from my friends list bc generally I won't duo w/ someone who says something that detracts from morale (the advantage they bring to the team usually doesn't out weigh the damage of being negative enough that they are helpful to climbing). That said I've definitely had games I was a jerk or fed into the negative behavior of others and argued with my team. Often a negative comment from one player can trigger a bad game for morale if you don't counter act it by providing something encouraging to keep the team focused on winning rather than arguing. This is the biggest point. Players who are in promos and feel like their team may lose the game for them, or people who are having a bad day, or someone on a losing streak that has been being abused in their games; there are a good deal of circumstances that can turn a player who usually doesn't say anything, or at least says very few negative things, into a flaming rager for a game or two. They won't be counted as toxic players, but they add a couple toxic games to the total count for the day.

I always thank my junglers for ganking or my laners for roaming. Even if the gank failed, I appreciate the pressure they provided. Now, if we somehow give the enemy a double or triple kill we laugh it off and prepare to try harder the next time. Not everything is passive aggressive. :/

Well do you think that a player than instantly types in ALL chat, Im better than all of you. Then proceeds to fight gangplank level 1 then TOWERDIVES level 1. Is that player very good? Plus i this was in a level 30 game

im sorry... but i cant help but see you are in EUW. I used to play EUW when i was in europe. im now in america and play on the NA. I can assure you based off of my experience and ALL of my friends who have come to america and played on the NA server. The NA population is far far worse than EUW. To be completely honest. I cant even play this game anymore because of how ignorant, rude and just plain toxic people are on this server. I could say something racist just as others will likely say to me about playing of EUW or any sort of crap to take the idea off of the problem. But seriously... Riot needs to implement a "kick" system. This will atleast help deal with the horrendous amount of time wasted with people who afk or purposely feed and flame. If a team could vote kick a player, then the game could be safe to leave... something like this is desperately needed. I know however this is not gunna happen based on what Riot has made very clear. So my original point, from someone who has had to stop playing league because it is no longer fun to deal with the nonsense on this specific server. The majority of players i would say are toxic. If you play NA, try EUW and vice versa.
