So how the hell are you supposed to play Aurelion Sol?
I've played him two games and it feels like his only use is to bully immobile melees and snipe kills with R.
I know he can do more than that, but it's a bit hard to make anything happen.

+ kiting skills
If you don't know how to position and kite (and aren't willing to learn) don't even bother.

But he doesn't really have the range to kite. I mean, I'm not great at kiting, but I can do ok with like ashe who has a super high range of effect with her w. But Aurelion doesn't really have anything like that.
Kiting isn't just throwing out long range slowing skills to stop someone ever getting in range of you, it's anything you do to move to keep someone in your threat zone while keeping yourself out of theirs. Ashe kites extremely well with her auto attacks, not her W, because she can quite comfortably keep melee champions in her auto attack range without ever being in theirs, thanks to her slows.
It is the same principal with Aurelion, except less forgiving, because there are only two ranges you can kite at: ~325 and ~650. If you can keep a melee (or otherwise non-threatening) champion at ~325 range while damaging them with your stars, you're kiting and doing your job. ~650 range is effective kiting for ranged champions.
It sounds to me like you don't really know what kiting is or how to do it (it is essential to learn that kiting is not a synonym for disengaging) and it's no wonder you're failing with Aurelion if that's the case - he is essentially "The Kiting Champion", it's basically all he does. You're gonna need to get comfortable with that to succeed with him.
they nerfed rylais and decreased the slow by 20% ......
Step one: Say to yourself " I'm a f'ing Dragon!" Step two: Play em till you get em.

Aurelion Sol has one of the steepest learning curves of any champion in the game. If you want to play him well be prepared to feed and be useless for a lot of games.
Clear waves, roam to a side lane, stun, murder, repeat.
this is why they are reworking him. steep learning curve and huge huge weaknesses and his damage isnt reliable since they decreased the slow on rylais
