Honor should be used in the Hextech Crafting System (Ideas Below...)

Igotlazy··72 votes·3,530 views

Honor was introduced over 3 years ago and to this day nothing has been done with it. Barely anyone remembers it exists, there is no reward for accumulating points except the Ribbons and they themselves are so rare that I haven't come across a player that has one in nearly 3 months. Hextech Crafting seems to be a perfect way to make the Honor system worth something.

My suggestion? Whenever you are Honored by a fellow player, you get a Gem based on whichever type of Honor you received. Friendly - Yellow Gem Helpful - Blue Gem Teamwork - Green Gem Honorable Opponent - Red Gem

Each of these Gems are "Materials" that can be disenchanted for very small amounts of Champion and Cosmetic Essence. However, very rarely (2-5%) these Gems will instead contain 1 Champion Shard or Cosmetic Shard. This Shard's properties will be based on the attributes of the player who gave you the original Gem. -If it's a Champion Shard, the Champion will be one that that Player had high Mastery on. -If it's a Skin Shard, then it will be a Skin that that Player owned (if that player owned none then it is randomized). -If it's a Ward Skin, then it will be a Ward Skin that that Player owned (if that player owned none then it is randomized).

Ribbons I feel should also be reworked as to how they are rewarded. Probably something along the lines of how many of each type of Gem a player has earned. Earn enough of a certain combination of types and you get one of the 4 Ribbons.

I do feel that certain limiters should be put in place though to stop potential abuse (for example friends constantly Honoring you to farm Gems). Maybe make it so you can only be honored by 1 specific player once per Season and/or a cap as to how many people you can honor per game. Something like 2 Allies and 2 Enemies.

I feel like this change will really incentivize people to use Honor as a way of thanking other players. This way, good behavior is physically being rewarded as something other than a simple number. Plus it incorporates all 3 of the current Systems (Honor, Champ Mastery and Crafting), so that's cool.

What do you guys think?

Hmm, I sense a sudden increase of everybody honoring everybody just to get stuff. A rather bad idea.

Not that I don't want free stuff mind you. XD I just really doubt Riot would go for this idea.

There would be no way for Riot to control how much you get other then assuming everybody will always honor everybody and adjusting the odds to that rate, meaning a very small chance of getting anything, possibly with upper limits. And thats not even mentioning that this would break the intend of the honor system itself with bogus honors, for that reason alone this would be a terrible idea.

EDIT: Also, any kind of limitation on the ability to honor other players would break the honor system itself, so thats also a big no no.

EDIT: And also, "good behavior is physically being rewarded". No it would not be a physical reward, you would be able to touch actual physical rewards and we cannot touch the in-game items we get. What would be the correct term? Electronic? Pixel? I don't know, there is probably a word for it but I can't recall what it is.

The word you are looking for is virtual, btw. And technically, technically, you do get something physical out of it. A small burst of dopamine (the happy hormone) goes off in your head. I just thought I would mention that, because otherwise, I completely agree with you 100%.

XD

Fair enough.

I agree that there will most likely be a spike if this were to be released, but I don't think it would last for very long. After a while people will lack the incentive to honor everybody with no benefit for themselves. I mean look at the original system. Everybody was honoring everyone else just because Ribbons were a thing. After only a week though barely anyone was mindlessly honoring all teammates and enemies. If you REALLY are worried, maybe there can be a cap as to how many people you can honor per game. Something like 2 Allies and 2 Enemies.

The difference here however is that when honor is linked to skins it means they have a real world money value, which is a way better incentive then getting a ribbon. Who really cared about a ribbon? But everybody and their grandmothers cares about skins.

I'm not worried at all about this, and I also don't even care if they implement this, at least in the sense that it does not affect me and I'll be reaping the benefits of it. I would however be disappointed if Riot would go through with it seeing as it has a rather obvious flaw.

Every idea you give that attempts to fix this flaw actually just adds to the problem of breaking the honor system. I'm sorry but I see no way around this.

MachineCaliber1 votes

That can be easily fixed, you need 3 more votes from that match to be eligible to get the gem. Problem solved.

Valderis Vandala1 votes

What exactly does that fix?

Hello I am Bird1 votes

What if you get a gem for getting the ribbon, and they just increase the values that the gems give.

Valderis Vandala1 votes

Yes, what if? What does that do? I guess that only changes the rate at which people get gems. It still breaks the honor system.

Hello I am Bird1 votes

People have been honoring others for ribbons forever.

And the way the system is set up, people can have hundreds of honors and never actually get a ribbon due to the way points are calculated.

Ribbons mean that someone has earned a reward for being positive. People aren't gonna honor toxic assholes, so the system will still work.

Valderis Vandala1 votes

Could be, or everybody makes a pact that whatever happens they're simply going to honer everyone to get free stuff that you otherwise have to pay for. It depends on people principles I suppose.

Knoyle1 votes

Well the way I see it, You wouldn't get honors unless demonstrating good behavior/ performance in game. It would likely promote people to be less toxic and actually put effort into games. To prevent the abuse you could probably prevent a player from honoring the same person consecutively if they are in a premade.

Valderis Vandala1 votes

Yeah, too bad we live in the real world and stuff doesn't go the way we want it to because people tend to abuse rules for their own personal benefit.

They could prevent you from honoring your premade but why would they? Why single out people that are perhaps friends who like to play together, why fuck those people over by preventing them from getting honors from each other?

Knoyle1 votes

Well I don't mean to cut out honoring premades entirely. Just put perhaps a limit on it per day or something similar. This only applies to premade as to prevent flat out abuse.

Valderis Vandala1 votes

It would encourage people to not play with their friends because they can't earn as much free stuff with them as opposed to playing with strangers.

It also would not stop players in general from forming an attitude of just reminding others in the end game chat to honor everyone for free stuff. If that kind of attitude develops then premades would still get the short end of the stick which isn't fair.

There would be no way for Riot to control how much you get

Make the gem's give out stuff based off of a person's honor value... if they literally honor everyone make it so that it can be disenchanted into only 1 essence... Meaning on the reverse if you have someone that rarely honors it has a higher chance of giving skins. You can get 1 honor (for the craft system) from each player... However players can still give you multiple honor, just nothing happens past the first.

Valderis Vandala1 votes

That's still the same problem just with tinier numbers, people would still be getting essence in a way that the players control instead of Riot.

Make the benefit too tiny and people won't care about it, make the benefit large enough and people will abuse it. I can't really see a middle ground with this.

That is because you refuse to see the middle ground.

What middle ground? Where is it? Describe it. What do you envision this middle ground to be?

Don't tell me I refuse something when I'm actively trying to see it.

what a complicated way to ask for more free stuff

I'd like to see them rework Honor into something more meaningful than a resource for Hextech crafting.

Darkslayer852 votes

Before idiots come along and say you'll be able to abuse this, make it so your premade can't honor you. Also, you can't honor in customs, so shut up on that too

Valderis Vandala1 votes

That would break the honor system as well.

Yeah, I have to agree with Valderis Vandala. It's easily exploitable and deducts from the real value of honor. No impact in game, so keep it something you give freely.

Randomonium2 votes

Not a bad idea but it's highly abusable.

In order for it to work there would have to be a couple of conditions:

  1. You only have a set number of honors you can give per week (to avoid everyone just honoring everyone every game.)
  2. You cannot honor the same person more than once and you cannot honor anyone who is on your friends list or who is part of the same club as you (to prevent honor trading among friends or honor trading clubs.)

There's probably more conditions that need to be put in place, feel free to add more if you think of any.

Kíng1 votes

I do like this Idea, it would give people more of a intensive to give honor after a game, but also seems like people may just do it all the time and try to make deals with people in the post game talk, like saying if you give me honor i'll give you honor and then it wouldn't be really honoring them for being a grateful opponent or the other options.

TallyZrg1 votes

I like this idea a lot and I like how you thought ahead about possible abuse cases and came up with a viable solution to address it.

Hopefully we can get some feedback from a Rioter on this idea.

Jorick1 votes

I suppose that's one way of making people give a crap about the honor system, though that'll probably make it so a ton of players just routinely honor everyone rather than actually trying to give someone a little positive note about their performance.

Decriptic1 votes

people in low elo dont give honors so what will we do for them

Rendarkan1 votes

Nothing?

Banuvan1 votes

It would be an interesting use of honor and make it useful again since they nerfed it so long ago.

iainB851 votes

Would be great if honor were used for hextech rather than another gimmick to try to force people to play in in coordinated teams.

The Rewritten1 votes

A direct link to a reward will just end up with every manipulative douchebag saying, "Honor me and I'll honor you", have 3 hopeful noobs honor him for no good reason, and just leave without honoring anyone back.

First of all, "honor for honor" is not how the honor system should work. You should only honor someone if you think they deserve it, and many times that means you don't deserve one back.

I do agree that Honor should be incentivized a little bit more than just a dumb ribbon.

But not like this.

I am thinking a good idea for Honor would be to do what Dota 2 does with Effigies and have the honor banner hung over one of the towers in that player's base. Anyone who clicks on the tower can view a buff that lets you know who owns that banner.

Or maybe a banner that gets added to the Champion Mastery Emote (Ctrl+6), so every time you do it, everyone can see your banner (this may clash with player behavior though. Typically people who have banners won't spam this very much anyway).

I don't know. I'm just throwing out some ideas. There are definitely ways to incentivize Honor though. Riot just isn't trying hard enough.

AngelKitten1 votes

Hextech crafting already gives you a good chance for free stuff, what more do you want? You should just be satisfied someone honors you without needing a reward for it.

GhastlyGhoulMan1 votes

I don't think it's actually very abusable with this setup. I for one wouldn't give out honors unless they deserved it (that's what I do anyway), and I definitely don't give out honors if someone's treating me like trash/begs for honors.

The thing about people who are jerks is that they will most likely still act like jerks in game, even if they know they can get stuff for being honored. I think this would be a great system for the majority of League tiers, like low elo where you probably won't be playing enough games to see EVERY person in your elo. However , it would need tweaking in high elo where there aren't as many players to cycle through. You would be limited in being able to honor people you've played before in those ranks, and that would need fixing.

Other than that, I approve.

Rendarkan1 votes

I think I've only given one honor out within the last year. And that was because s/he wasn't toxic or anything. I dunno what it is but I been getting stuck in toxic lobbies and people complaining over not getting their role. I just refuse to even type when playing anymore.

RookPusher1 votes

Really? I have my green ribbon, and I used to have the ribbon you got for having all three. But Helpful is hard to get after awhile.

Heres your fix: if their on your friends list, you can't honor them. This stops boosting.

Iqqi1 votes

I am going to be honest. I did not read this. Too long for me. Seems like a popular idea though congrats.

The reason why the existing honor system was a complete failure is because of two reasons.

  1. The level of honor you need to receive (and keep) the ribbon is outrageous.
  2. The system is 100% based on players using the honor system. Riot has the data, but anyone can tell that probably 95% of all games go without someone using the system when it could of been used.

If Riot wants to keep the honor system that is fine, but as long as the system is built around requiring players to honor one another it will never work no matter what you do.

Riot needs to look at their toxic player AI system and do the reverse. They need to take that system. Copy it and make a new one which is the reverse. Instead of going in and identifying toxic players. It needs to be sifting through games and identifying good players. Obviously this is a large task for a system to sift through a game and see if someone was toxic or not. I dont expect immediate detection like they do for punishments.

I want a system which goes through your games, if you didn't break the summoners code and used helpful language such as "GJ" and such. The system should be rewarding you honor. Get rid of the specific honor categories and make an all encompassing one. Identify those who didn't break the rules. Apply recognition on your own.

Then create appealing cosmetic content that is for people on the nice list only. Give them a summoners icon. A special skin, border (actually cool) and an in game emote kind of like the mastery one we have today. Basically give them a carrot people actually want.

As long as the system is dependent on people honoring one another it is never going to be effective. It will always be biased, and those who deserve honor will go without. Exactly like today. If you make the carrot without creating the check. We all just end up honoring everyone after a game whether they deserve it or not, and not honoring those who earned it, but we were too butt hurt to honor.
