The Jungler's purpose

As a support main who only relatively recently discovered the jungle role and absolutely loves it, I'd like to know what job description the jungle now actually has.

From my understanding the jungle has four jobs:

  1. Taking jungle farm
  2. Securing dragon
  3. Ganking your lanes
  4. Preventing enemy hypercarries from having a good early game

(Arranged in order of importance)

Am I wrong about this? Because from my experience people often expect the jungler to do soooo much more even though you can't be everywhere at once. Do you have to babysit your losing lanes? Is it wrong to push lanes into the tower when nobody is in the lane?

I would appreciate a insightful discussion about what the jungler actually is supposed to do or not to do right now.

No you don't babysit a losing lane, unless every lane is losing I think. You are allowed to push lanes into tower because it denies the enemy farm and you can damage the tower for a good chunk. Also, gank winning lanes to snowball and ward for teammates (optional, I do this because "wards2k17? lol")

The goal of the Jungle is to win. You do this by creating advantages for your team. These include lane dominance for your teammates, towers, dragons, map vision.

If you have 3 losing lanes you cannot do anything. Just attempt to aid the person that has the best CS. Usually these games end very badly and result in a lot of rage from the whole team "gg ff20 report jungle asleep" but the truth is that you can not gank a laner that's always dead. This is directly related to the first rule of jungle "Do not gank a losing lane". Especially don't gank the lane where the laner dies repeatedly in 1v1's. If you do try to help the losing lane: enemy jungler will ruin your other 2 lanes as well & you will get double killed.

If you have lanes that manage to stay alive you are good to actually play a jungle game.

Get a fast clear, doesnt have to be a full clear, and gank the first over extended Lane you see (or the lane with most CC). Constantly look at the map for opportunities in the lanes close to your clear path.

Once you have given an early advantage to one of your lanes. Early advantages are very usefull and that's a lane that will stay alive at least.

Usually I help out top lane early once or twice. This will cause enemy top to beg help. Therefore enemy jungler might be top at the time dragon is on the table. If the enemy jungler ever shows top between 8-12minutes you have a free dragon.

Ward your own jungle early. Force your team to pink your jungle/river. And spam ping them to collapse on an enemy jungler invade. Get the scuttle.

You are past minute 5 of the game. Towers have less defense now. After a gank on bot, you kill the enemy adc and support recalls. -> crash their wave to tower. Don't overstay and let your botlane recall.

If you just ganked bot, but no one died and they are under tower -> freeze. Don't push don't dive. The enemy jungler and mid are on their way for a countergank. Ward up and clear camps around the lane. If there's reinforcements inbound spam ping to run.

As a jungler you are the one with the map awareness. Your laner is looking at the minion hp and never at the map.

If your team is ahead, start warding enemy jungle. And make together with your top/mid/support life he'll for the enemy jungle. Gank mid then get mid the enemy blue for example. Very easy to do if your lanes are dominant. Starve enemy jungler. Win your own "lane"

Enemy lane is over extending -> free kills, go gank

Your Lane is over extending -> go ward up the lane and clear in that area cuzz the enemy jungler is going to gank soon. Or use your later to pressure enemy jungle/lane/objective. Don't leave him over extended in Lane waiting to die.

If your later just died you are obliged to go cleanup his Lane from all the minions and save the tower. Even if he tilts and spam pings you. Don't grant the enemy team a tower. Definitely not the first one.

If for example top Lane is losing, and Tower is close -> stage a 4man dive bot and get their tower sooner anyway. You can also try to gank the grossly over extended but winning enemy top laner, but your top is losing and 20%hp so the best that will happen is a blown flash and wasted time. Time the enemy jungler will use to crush your mid.

After a succesfull gank bot or mid around 8-12 min ping them to do dragon or ping them to roam and 4 man a lane. Ward deep for your top to TP.

Direct your team to do objectives. And save your smite for those.

Donate any buffs after the 18min mark

When dragon is on cooldown go help your top if he's still worth a damn and invite him to a party mid or invite mid & top to do rift herald. Hit the eye. Rift herald is super situational and you should only do it if there's a really good and easy opportunity. Otherwise just let it be.

We past the 20 minute mark. Towers are down all over the map. Group.

Are you losing? Too bad. You will not have any farm to farm and will become very useless very soon. Try to steal a drake, try to group with more people sooner than the enemy and leave asap. You need Lane dominance from at least 2 lanes or you will lose your entire jungle to the enemy team for the rest of the game.

Are you winning? Great. Slowly increase your teams advantages. Kill enemies in teamfights and safely take objectives. Take everything from the enemy jungle. Don't die. Don't overstay.

3 and 4 go together and really depend on which jungler you're playing. If it's someone that falls off like LeeSin RekSai Pantheon or a tank(anyone that builds cinderhulk) then you gotta gank early. If it's someone that can carry likeMasterYi Kindred then it's ok to chill and farm.

Farm>Ganks. When you farm you hit power spikes (Level-ups and item buys) to make ganks stronger, plus it's more consistent than relying on allies. I've jungled since early S3 and I can tell you that it's very rarely worth ganking for a losing lane, and if it gets countered you're getting doubled.

Unfortunately, Riot in their infinite wisdom added rubber banding XP to the game, effectively watering down how much you can punish bad junglers for having abysmal pathing and spamming ganks. Lo and behold, LeeSin Elise style smash-your-face-onto-your-keyboard early game play style is now dominating.

Dragon/Rift/Baron control Lane Pressure

Simplest way of putting it would be, are the enemy laners scared you're about to show up? Yes - You are doing good No - You aren't doing jack shit

If a lane is losing help them but don't babysit unless it's like a nasus or something who you know will carry late game. Ignore when people rage. They just want someone to blame when they fuck up. Usually it's the jungler and if the jungler is doing good it's the support not peeling properly.

Secret Jungler Technique: Camp the person on the biggest losing streak and tilt them to the point they can't play properly
