Were all remade champs worse than their original?

The entire team··15 votes·11,964 views

I dunno about this statement. People have been really adamant on requesting to revert Irelia, Akali and Galio, with some of their aspects being pretty cancerous to many. And even two of them, are far and Leblanc, were reverted to their old selves.

So, what reworks have worked? What are the champions that Riot did right?

Is it even a safe case to revert all champs into their previous states? Or not?

Poppy is overall better Sion has a cohesive kit now (Didn't his old kit have half the abilities scaling with AD, half with AP?) Warwick hasn't gotten complaints to my knowledge, gave players more to work with Fiora 's new ult doesn't match her theme, but is healthier (rimtap) than her old ult Yorick can be played thanks to his rework, so that's something

There are a lot of others that are on the fence, where they're better in some ways but missing the mark in others.

I think for overall bad reworks there are very few.

Why can Yasuo have that ult and Fiora can't though... I just love Fiora (and loved her old ult), but i despise Yasuo. I've felt weird about Fiora ever since. she used to be my main but she's so hard now, I still like her but can't do well. :(

DrCyanide14 votes

Yasuo doesn't have that ult. He's not untargetable, he doesn't auto hit everyone in the vicinity, and he isn't able to lifesteal back to full health from his ult.

Oleandervine2 votes

To be fair, it's a glorified Alpha Strike. I'm under the belief it COULD have been balanced, but I believe they chose to remove it to differentiate her from Master Yi. If they can balance Alpha Strike, they could have balanced her old ult.

DrCyanide1 votes

Alpha Strike is a good comparison, I'll give you that, but how do you make Alpha Strike ult worthy without ending up with the problem that was old Fiora's ult?

I think it's a case of too few balance dials - effect duration and damage per strike. Too low on either and it feels like a basic ability, too high and it's overwhelming. They needed some other way to apply the damage if they were going to give it the damage to feel ult worthy without it being overbearing.

Anidan4 votes

Given that it was just Juggernaut's ult ripped straight from DotA and given scalings with no other changes besides diminishing returns on damage with repeated strikes against the same target, so you probably couldn't balance it in this game. It's an ult designed for a very different setting, and this game isn't built to deal with it. In DotA you could use a Eul's scepter to make yourself untouchable for a bit to break the ult, use an item or spell to go invis and it'll end his ult prematurely, various sources of Ethereal which make you immune to physical damage (which his ult deals), and so on. This game has.... Zhonya's. Which was a heavy AP item, so your champions that weren't AP with access to gold (so no AP supports for the vast majority of the game length) couldn't really make use of it when that ult was around.

They took the ability without taking any of the mitigating tools that allow it to be as strong as it is without it being impossible to deal with.

Why doesn’t Fiora’s ult Match her theme?

DrCyanide3 votes

She's a dualist, someone who prefers to fights 1v1 instead of with a group. Her ult is a massive AoE team heal. In Fiora's ideal world, she'd never have teammates around to heal, so why would a massive heal be her ultimate?

ZackTheWaffleMan2 votes

Because it's also a good self heal

DrCyanide3 votes

A single target heal accomplishes the same results for Fiora while emphasizing her 1v1 theme.

yoricks play rate hasnt changed since his rework. infact iirc it's gone down by one percent. while his rework made him easier to play in the since that he really didnt do anything other than lane bully before ( i say that knowing that no one who had yorick as a teammate knew what to do when they were revived by his ult, otherwise i'd say he was good in a team fight). now he lane can lane bully plus split push. but that's about it. his kit has no life and that is NOT A PUN. his old kit had character and tbh some of his moves had a lot of utility like almost all of them.

now :/ it's a meh at best. i'd have more fun with league if i had old yorick back. all they had to do was rework his ult and maybe his passive along with a visual update. they didnt have to do.... the thing they did.

The biggest gripe of reworks that make them considered failures is more so of the attitude and lore changes.

Galio was complained mainly because of his attitude changed. He went from a unqiue stoic guardian. Always prepared, vigilant, and guided while giving advice. He would tutor Shyvana to control her rage, Poppy in confidence and to move on from her tragic past. After his rework he was mostly compared to that giant jerk, or some compared him to Jayce. Jayce isn't a bad character, just why have two same attitude champions. I personally like the rework, he should be a Vanguard and not a mage ... warrior ... thing. He is more active in melee combat instead of a sniper. I can see the complaints in changing play styles.

Swain was hated entirely based on looks and no Beatrice. His kit on the other hand, was considered perfecto by all, haters and lovers. His attitude, voice, everything else was good, it was his design that was considered a complete failure. It is the fact that he went from an old crippled man, with a walking stick and a six eyed bird, to a somewhat old muscle bound man with a claw hand like thing and no bird. People compared him to Vladimir, and considered he stole Vlad's rework. He even looks a bit like a older Vladimir with his hair style a bit matching. I personally agree, Swain was unique, even to his hair due. Now he is a copy pasted muscle mage, that seems to be the new fad these days. I prefer my mages and warlocks old, withered, and weak, but crafty, clever, and wise instead.

However of all the reworks that are failures, Aatrox takes the cake and cries while eating it, absolute worst rework unchallenged. His rework makes the Juggernaut rework, including Morde, look successful. Everything that was Aatrox is no longer Aatrox. The only reason he is picked is because he is an early game power house who drops off just as bad as Pantheon, but is all better. This is an early game meta so of course pick the best early game champion. But that is the thing, old Aatrox was an auto attack late game destroyer when he got there. His revive was a late game changer that turned the tides when it was being used well. Auto attacks are also the best late game.

Still continuing on, Aatrox's looks and lore are even worse. His old looks were jagged blades and armor, with a darkened, look to represent destruction and death of WAR. Now he is smooth and mostly red, looking like more of a plastic toy, what a joke. His lore rework destroyed League of Legends. It changed from a LEAGUE OF LEGENDARY HEROES FROM ACROSS THE PLANET AND COSMOS to League of Lovecraft. The Void is the big bad, what about the Shadow Isles? Or the Frozen Watchers? The Shadow Isles will probably turn into some innocent anti hero group or something. The Frozen Watchers even got retconned into the leaders of The Void, such a terrible shame. This is the same mistakes WoW made, changed a unique lore into just another Lovecraft story. Always happens when Lovecraft is involved.

But it doesn't even end there, now for the worst part. So Aatrox's kit, and looks are completely different, but what about his attitude? Horrible, absolutely horrible, I mean AFFECTS YOUR HEALTH HORRIBLE! Whoever in Riot thought it was a good idea to make a champion seethe, whisper, rage while yelling, what have you about wanting to commit suicide and hates all life a good idea ... that person should be mentally checked. I think that person wants to commit suicide and should be helped not to do it. Listen to old Aatrox's audio file, you'll hear an awesome, fantastic, professional Demon God of War at his finest work. He had the best voice, attitude, and lines, no other champion could even be close to compete. Now he is a suicidal depressed emo bitch, to which again, wants to commit suicide. I sometimes have to take breaks from the game after playing him because he makes me so sad and super depressed from just listening to him. I could just mute him but that doesn't really work.

Phew long winded rant there haha, Aatrox rework was a personal one. Also before I forget the man behind Aatrox's rework stated that the rework was NOT for Aatrox's mains. ... Then what the f%$k is the point of a rework for then?

I don’t understand why people consider Galio’s personality to be “Giant jerk”. I’ve heard he’s a meathead that loves to fight, and while he is it isn’t all he is.

Listen to enough of Galio’s lines and you’ll see he’s saddened at times or has deeper introspection than at first glance. He’s so positive because he wants to make the most of his time awake.

Having everything turn to Lovecraft when Lovecraft is involved is just so freaking weird to someone who's read Lovecraft before. It shouldn't be this giant affair threatening to take over the world or whatever, because that immediately misses the point. Part of the point is that those Old Ones simply don't even care about us, so why would they worry themselves with taking over our world? If they wanted, they could subjugate us or destroy us on a whim, so why the theatrics with the Prophet of the Void and the released void creatures? As far as I'm concerned, it's not even Lovecraftian in anything but the naming schemes. Part of the madness that comes with interacting with anything relating to the Old Ones is the feeling that they're incomprehensibly powerful and beyond our understanding, and it's when you try to understand that you become mad. You don't become "corrupted" by them and become their agent, you just go bonkers by having your reality completely and utterly broken by beings who don't operate on the same rules of reality that we do.

I hate WoW's twisting of Lovecraft, and I'm not a fan of League's rendition, either. The mystique isn't that they're some unstoppable force beyond our reckoning, but that they're beyond our possibility of knowing to begin with, and you need more than just a weird physiology or a name with an apostrophe to beyond any possible human comprehension.

It's cause he doesn't suck gameplay wise, but design wise he sucks. He has 3 knockups, a drag with his W, a double dash, a revive, and a AD increase. That is an overloaded and unhealthy kit. He is played because he IS THE BEST champion to play. Why play riven when you can play Aatrox? On the real?

Because he can't split push and currently splitting wins more game than teamfighting, especially under diamond.

Bμbble Butt2 votes

Splitpushing doesn't win games. It's a scenario that comes from a situation. . . btw Riven is good in all elos. She is unhealthy for the game like many bruisers who get a renewable shield and multiple dashes with CC. Check how many riven mains are in challenger. I would also like to point out how many people play aatrox in challenger. they're both really strong was my main point, just that aatrox is a little better.

Yikes, just yikes. You're claiming something that's the reason for low elo stomping isn't winning games, I think you have to look at a bit more ranked games, buddy. Even in pro play split pushing can win games.

Marshbouy5 votes

because riven is far more mobile and can execute her damage in a much shorter time period, duh.

Bμbble Butt1 votes

I guess aatrox doesn't have a double dash, a speed boost from his ult, and a shit ton of cc to prevent running. MY BAD DUDE. I guess I'll think more about it before saying something stupid. Right, marshbouy?

Marshbouy5 votes

Riven can dash 3 times every 13 seconds from just one ability and no CDR. Adding in her E that's an additional dash every six seconds.

Aatrox can dash one time every 8 seconds. edit: he also must chain abilities together in order to dash while using his Q. Otherwise his Q stops his movement.

riven is far more mobile.

Riven can also burst much faster if you animation cancel correctly. Aatrox, to the best of my knowledge, has very limited animation canceling if any.

They're not the same champion. Aatrox is slower and less mobile, riven is faster and more mobile. Aatrox isn't an objectively better riven like you claim he is.

Interesting is that people tend to say that Aatrox rework sucks but i see him in most of my games.

The reason so many people dislike Aatrox’s rework was because it stripped the personality they had built up for him for years. He was a silent battle manipulator that shaped valoran for milennia just for fun at first, and now he’s a rage-fueled chaos machine who’s only hope is to eliminate reality to free himself.

Personally, I dislike that fallen Ascendants and Darkin are now the same thing. It never sat right with me, and the fact that we can technically count Xerath and Renekton as Darkin seems to be aggravating everyone. I can get behind the Darkin as once being noble, or Aatrox being desperate to find a host after his current one/s die, but the complete personality flip just doesn’t settle right. How’s he even supposed to eliminate reality anyways, become so massive he collapses in on himself?

Gameplay wise, he’s just a completely different champ than he used to be. While none of the kits fit the theme they were trying to portray well, parts of his old kit would’ve worked so much better st accomplishing this than his new one. For example, he’s currently supposed to be a nigh unstoppable force that manipulates the bodies of the fallen to improve himself somehow, without changing how he fights much. Only thing that uses dead/hurt enemies is his e, which is basically lifesteal and two dashes plus a damage bump. His old passive grants him the ability to become stronger and revive based on how much he hurt the enemy, his old w allowed him to drain the life of enemies more efficiently or utilize his health to deal increased damage to enemies, and his old ult literally sucked life force from nearby enemies to empower him. All of these fit better than a glorified grievous wounds, a magic chain that resets itself after a second or two, and a slight bump in damage/health and a revive if used under like 10 seconds.

Regarding appearances, his original model and animations look better than almost all of his new ones. The only new animation/model I like is his transformation for his R, but not the ability itself. Even his splash art was better, as originally he looked cold and calculating, maybe gonna kill you maybe not, while the new one looks like he fell backwards after stepping on dog crap and is expressing mild disappointment/disgust awkwardly through his teeth.

New Akali is balanced around high elo and people who know how to play her

Old Akali, was either sleeper OP and abused while everyone forgot about her, or kept in the garbage because she was 100% stat checking

3TWarrior4 votes

it's not even balanced around high-level gameplay. Her ban rate is still ridiculously high and no one wants to deal with her. Riot even rewrote the base code of the game only for her to give her "some" counterplay while she is in her shroud

I think currently Galio is overturned but is getting a nerf in a few days. But a larger group of people play the new one, even before his most recent changes, than the old original one. I fell in love with rework Galio for sure.

Same with Swain. I started playing him season 6 and loved him and I was scared for his rework. But now I’m able to maximize his use with the rework and I feel he can have choices. He can be bursty or he can be thextank mage.

Deathhawk8886 votes

I’ve heard people wanting Swain to be reverted simply because Beatrice is not there or his old kit was “better”, but old Swain had to build full Mana and Zhonyas just to be relevant past 20 mins.

People say they want X reverted because they had a bad experience with them or have nostalgia goggles, like Akali. Old Akali was completely broken and ridiculously stat-checky, able to do current Akalis damage with zero skill

If I had to rate the reworks out of 10 as reworks of the original champions. These are the ones I am most familiar with!

Poppy 2/10 (Destroyed the personality of the champion I once mained.) Yorick 7/10 (Vast improvement over the old one, good job RIOT!) Galio 3/10 (Not a fan of the new personality, More of a Fat Mage over an Anti-Mage now!) Warwick 9/10 (Use this as a template on how to rework champions RIOT!) Taric 7/10 (Good update, preferred the old voice. But the kit is a lot better to use!) Ryze 6/10 (Good update, neutered because of LCS!) Urgot 6/10 (Would be better with Hyper Kinetic Position Reverser!) Akali 2/10 (Chronically ANTIFUN to play against. I understand she is weak but it does not make her any less irritating. ) Nunu 5/10 (Visuals are not my cup of tea, Loved the old Willump design. Kit however is pretty fun.) Aatrox -10/10 (It's not a rework, its a new champion called Aatrox, kick in the balls to the players that grew to love the old champion and now have nothing.)

Zero Skill Tank1 votes

I don't think 2/10 is a just judgement for Poppy, her gameplay is far superior then what it used to be.

Can't ever say "all" because there will be exceptions. Warwick is probably better than his previous. Sion, aatrox, and urgot are all different, not necessarily superior or inferior to their old counterparts. Obviously some like akali and irelia are much worse. Still we have a mix bag.

The DrBonjigollo3 votes

Imo none of the reworks are worse than their original and are rather much healthier. Most of the people bitching about them are either:

A. Pre-rework mains who liked abusing a dumb kit for an unpopular champ that was strong only in their hands- Akali Urgot or B. People who didn't know how Atrocious they were to deal with pre-rework - Akali Irelia Kayle

I personally don't see much difference between Pre-rework and Post-rework champs besides their player-base increasing because they're actually interesting now and they're not absurdly dumb to deal with...Except for Irelia but she's always been like that.

Edit: I forgot Rek'sai, she was definitely better before. I love her new ult but whatever Riot did to her numbers due to the change really crippled her.

The only rework i think was actually "bad" was Aatrox and Karma in the sense that he preserved nearly nothing from his old selves. I don't even play Aatrox or am I a main, and I never even got to play old Karma.

Other reworks largely preserved the essence of the original champion or made them better at what they were originally all about.

I think I'd like his new Q better if it was made to be more of a DPS tool with less CC. They made him more of a Juggernaut than a duelist and I'm personally not a fan.

Karma went from a unit champion to being a generic Utility mage. I don't like that on principle, especially Riots recent mission of diversifying the champ pool since season 5. Makes the Karma rework look hella bad in hindsight.

Then there's {champion:98}} and Mordekaiser. In his case, he just feels like his old self but with tumors of gimmicks slapped on that siphon away from em.

I'd say Warwick Nunu and, as a pre-rework Eve main Evelynn

At the very least, these are the champions that I would say were clear improvements; made their fantasies better, and expanded their themes perfectly. People may disagree about Evelynn, but at the very least, I haven't really seen (m)any complaints about Warwick and Nunu, so I'd like to think a lot of people would agree about them.

Weiss Guertena3 votes

Will also be counting a few champions that received extensive gameplay changes but not full VGU's on the list:

Great reworks: Swain Sion Urgot Warwick Nunu. Almost all the champions' aspects improved with most of complaints being geared towards their aesthetics. Good reworks: Irelia Katarina Poppy Graves Yorick Gangplank Taric Caitlyn . Great concepts, but sometimes deviate from the original champion too much and/or present recurring balance issues. Bad reworks: Zac Kindred Skarner Shaco Vladimir Malzahar Soraka(after Q sweet-spot removal)Ryze(again). These failed to fix any of the champions' issues, sometimes even making them worse while also making said champions feel less enjoyable to play as. "Champion deleted ad replaced with another one" reworks: Aatrox Karma Galio. All in the title. Champions in previous tier at least stayed recognizable. "Oh God why?" reworks: Mordekaiser. No comment needed on this one.

Special mention: Akali, being one of more controversial ones. People who think new Akali is worse to face than old one are in serious denial. Rework introduced more counterplay in almost all aspects of her kit, backloading and spacing out her damage, restricting her mobility and adding actual resource management. Yes, true stealth is bullshit, but other than that Akali is by far the best designed assassin.

Seriously, did you people already forget how fun was it to lane against old Akali? Old "dominate her for first 5 levels then die when she reaches 6 anyway" Akali? Old "all my damage is instant point-and-click so if you're in range of my triple gapcloser I statcheck you to death" Akali? Old "I'm either useless or broken with no middle ground" Akali? Yeah. New one is an improvement in every aspect.

Xerath after the rework (2013!! almost 6 years!!!) he's one of the most balanced champs ever. never out of line, never too weak, in years after his rework, he only got some light touches, but nothing heavy. his gameplay and identity are well defined, scales well with mastery, visuals are top of the line. i only wish they'd make some more skins for him at this point.
