Quick question, what part of Aurelion Sol feels like a minigame to you?

Jeddy0178 votes

I feel like he or she is referring to the orbiting stars around Sol.And I guess the game is "Dodge the Stars".

RiotMeddler13 votes

That's what I figured might be the case, looking to understand whether minigame's being used so broadly it's now used to refer to AOE damage or skillshots that aren't exactly like existing ones though. Not a particularly useful term if so.

Yeah the current minigames off the top of my head are:

Bard passive: Collect all the chimes (not sure this classifies tho but I think it does) Fiora ult: Hit all the vitals (and technically passive too)

But these were for the player to play lol

Now for Aurelion its for the ENEMY to play Dodge the stars. In my current pbe games so far, they aren't doing so well :/

Also in case you're confused, the "minigames" (in my mind) are a side activity you have to do while playing the game originally. Hence with bard you have to do all support stuff but at the same time, you have to know when to leave for chimes and when to come back. With fiora, you gotta somehow hit the vitals while trying to kill the enemy. And with Aurelion Sol, the enemy has to somehow dodge your stars while they just cs.

Not saying its a bad thing on Sol, just saying that its there lol.

RiotMeddler7 votes

As clarification then is Karthus Q a minigame to you? Similar dodge the stuff gameplay in a way that's different to other champions (frequency primarily).

BetweenSkill3 votes

Personally I would say no, it's an active ability, not something that passively changes the way you fight.

Valor Bot1 votes

It may as well be for all the time it spends on cooldown.

no I don't see that as a minigame. I can see the confusion though. The thing is that Sol's passive is exactly that, his passive. It's up at all times. Meaning every second that you're near Sol you have to be wary of the possibility that one of those stars could hit you or their range could increase. Karthus Q on the other hand is not up all the time (unless the karthus casts is continually) and the simple counterplay to that is be near minions. If you're near minions it won't be worth it and the karthus will run out of mana if he continues.

More examples are like the other post said: -Skarner's passive (have to collect the shrines in the jungle as the skarner may beat your jungler up if he gets them all),

  • this could just be me but there's also dodge the hook but thats only because only one hook needs to land on the right champ to win the game -Illaoi's e passive is another. If you're turned into a vessel you have to cs and be wary of the tentacles while you're csing (or just stay under tower and kill them)

It's mostly on the newer champs lol. Don't get me wrong, I actually DO like this minigame on Sol and I love sol himself as he has weaknesses (get close and he can't do anything) and the player has the control with it.

Another definition for "minigame" is once the player hits an ability, it basically says "do these actions and you win". For instance, when fiora ults its "hit these 4 vitals and you win". For Bard its "get all the chimes and you win (more chimes=more meep damage and more slow right?). For Illaoi its "Kill the vessel and you win". This doesn't apply to karthus as he isn't "Hit your Q and you win". Also note that these are mid-lategame (except fiora shes all game, sry I kinda hate her with her true dmg bs and w lol). Like early game most of these don't apply but lategame if one of these happens, the minigame then applies.

edit: jsyk I'm ok with the minigames. I feel they make champs unique. I was just echoing a few posts I had seen on the boards where players were like "I wish they would stop with the minigames. Makes more work for us". I'm personally ok with them and was semi making a mock post while at the same time thanking you for sol lol (he's awesome). But still, screw fiora and her true dmg bs -_-

Literally every Karthus casts it continually. That's the point of Karthus.

Gangplank barrels (at least early game/laning phase, after that it becomes less of a minigame and more just reactionary thing) and his silver serpent income Illaoi tentacles, building them up/killing them off, moreso after you've been 'killed' by her e, it's always there, just becomes more important then. Gnar hulkout timing Kindred passive stacking Veigar Nasus stacking.. Caitlyn twaps/headshots Teemo twaps... Shen sword thang Zac blobs Those are you 'minigame' champs.

And Bard meeps, Fiora vitals are..uh..half I guess?

Aurelion doesn't really look minigame-ish at all, he just have a pretty specific and visible 'threat range.' Where most champs have a pretty specific threat range, but it's not always visible.

Edit: OH YAH, I forgot the biggest minigame of all: Draven Draven Draven Draven Draven Draven Draven Draven (really though, spinning axe catching..that one's a pretty big minigame)

YOU'RE GOING TO CALL ILLAOI A MINIGAME CHAMP AND SAY NOTHING ABOUT THE DONGER??

EvilMerodach1 votes

{quoted}

YOU'RE GOING TO CALL ILLAOI A MINIGAME CHAMP AND SAY NOTHING ABOUT THE DONGER??

I thought about it..but really..I think him and zyra are kinda just zone control, dongers being slower, more deliberate this is my house, zyra being more temp hot zone bursty zone control. It's not really a minigame when it's their whole game. =P

The tentacle thing really is only a part of Illaoi, other than that she doesn't play too from Garen Darius SionSkarner - in the, 'build tanky, run at people, hope you still have enough health to survive once you get there, and start hammering away at people' kinda way. She just has the minigame setup of the tentacles that determines if she'll be successful or not in the 'once you get there' part.

Also like Veigar and Nasus, while a huge part of their power comes from their mini-game stacking, doesn't completely dwarf their playstyle. Yes, Nasus will spend 20mins in his 'minigame', but once that's done he'll more or less join the rest of the league world and play similar to champs in his class, just his effectiveness once he rejoins the world was determined 10-15minutes ago, not in the moment so much. And Veigar pretty much just plays as a normal cc burst mage, just with the ticking time bomb power spike overload, start weaker than other burst mages, end strongest possible burst mage in the game, the 'clock' just ticks faster/slower depending on how well his minigame went.

But, yah, Heimerdinger never really leaves his 'game', it's just who he is. Swaggering his way around his zone from level 1-18.

BetweenSkill3 votes

I feel it's being used to describe passive abilities that completely change how one has to play as/against a champ, forcing an entire gameplay shift due to something passive, rather than actively reactive.

Skarner's pillars, Aurelion's orbiting stars, Fiora's passive etc

Retillin2 votes

I think the passive vs active play is key.

what you deserve2 votes

referring to Sol's stars as a minigame is pretty damn stupid though

BetweenSkill1 votes

I'm not saying it's anything as bad as the other minigames, I actually think it's fair and fits (requiring your opponent to "run and hide" from the dragon), but it still is a minigame.

what you deserve1 votes

No, that'a nonsense. Dodging skillshots is part of the game, not a minigame. Is playing against Diana a minigame because her skillshot is curved? Do you include Katarina's mark mechanic? If you want everything to be a minigame, you can call everything a minigame. It's still fucking stupid though

BetweenSkill1 votes

You don't have to be so toxic.

I'm not saying it's like other minigames, I'm simply justifying why some people think of it as such do to its passive nature rather than being a skillshot ability or even an active one.

ArcticSirius3 votes

I personally don't see it as a mini game. It's simply a passive Karthus E that can grow.

I assume people are slapping the term "Minigame" on champs that require you to play (as,with or against) differently than other champs. For example when Singed is in the game, you can't play as or against him like any other champ. The enemy is playing the "Don't chase Singed" minigame & the Singed player is playing "Running Sim 2016".

Of course, the size of the minigame & how it affects the game varies.Skarner's minigame has a lot more impact because of the possible teamfights or skirmishes around the Dominion rocks.Bard's chime quest allows him to roam quicker because of the move speed,so you got to be careful of his roams.Nasus is just a farming sim & requires the enemy to either put him behind HARD to delay the inevitable or finish the game before the inevitable happens. Many champs bring their own sort of "minigames" to the game but that's just them being different & requiring players to do something to the way they play. And with the continue use of Roster updates, these "minigames" will continue to appear. So yes,the term is being used very broad because people are doing more than just playing League of Legends.

Which means you guys at Riot is doing something right to make certain matches of League feel different from others. Not all of them & it's not perfect, but you guys are taking the right steps somewhere in differentiating champs.

I still don't understand why Singed exists. I can't imagine it being very fun to just run around, and he's unfun to lane against or play against. The only consolation I have when Singed is in the game is that 4v5 teamfights are easy.

Photos of Ghosts1 votes

It's fun to be fast, and to passively kill people. It's fun to have low APM and still outplay because spazzing on your keyboard is not satisfying to us, too stressful.

Dessem1 votes

I think it'd be cool if Singed's interaction pattern was a bit more exciting than, "Singed is strong enough to kill you and chases you" or "You're strong enough to kill Singed and he runs away from you", though. :(

Photos of Ghosts1 votes

I see that you don't get it. It's "Singed's brain is strong enough to make you chase him".

Bwa ha ha.

Ralanr1 votes

Fun is subjective. Personally I find it nice to play such an outlandish playstyle from time to time.

You are mistaken in thinking it's not fun to play AS Singed. This is a very hard to master but exceptionally funny way to play.

You have to play Frogger in order to CS or go in on the enemy laner. And this isnt a skill that you turn on and off.

How is that not a minigame?

Don't mind him, I for one like minigames. It's just some lower skilled players find it difficult to keep track of important stuff like minimap and awareness of enemy/ally positions when they have to play these minigames.

Flemman1 votes

if you understand french, here is the what we can read in his announcement:

"Contrairement à la plupart des champions de League of Legends, Aurelion Sol inflige la majeure partie de ses dégâts via sa compétence passive. Centre de l'univers crée un mini-jeu dans le jeu pendant la phase de laning : Aurelion Sol cherche à positionner ses étoiles de manière à ce qu'elles percutent son adversaire direct pendant que ce dernier doit rester en mouvement pour les éviter. "

So, basically, if riot say it's a minigame, I take it as a minigame ^^

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

For what its worth i dont see A-Sol's passive as a minigame. Its more of an AOE zone control around him.

On a somewhat related note Fiora's passive is an example of a minigame that the enemy is forced into (protect your vitals or else) and its one that some champions dont have the tools to play as fiora dashes around them and they have little to no mobility.

BADxW0LF1 votes

Personally, I have been one to complain about the whole minigames stuff. This does not feel like a minigame at all. It is similar to Karthus or Mundo's aoe abilities...only just always on with no cost. Hence, I assume, it's weaker power.

To be honest, minigames are probably here to stay. They provide levels of challenges that can make plays based off of skill, (like Juggling axes) and involving the opponent, inherently adds counterplay. (Like being able to shot a skill shot where those axes would land.)

I use Draven as an example because while mini games have become a hot topic as of late, Draven is fairly old, and was probably one of the first champs to have a mini game in there kit. Riot knows that mini games can work.

Decrit3 votes

Hell, now even skillshots are called minigames? -_-

I can see your point from other replies, and still i don' t agree with it. Dodging stuff is a core part of this game since always, and in Aurelion case is no different - it is persistent, but ends there.

It changes the approach at how you play against that champion, but isn't this supposed to be applied to every well done skill in game?

I don't really see it as a minigame... mini games require you to decently alter the way you play, this doesn't really. It would be like calling Sunfire Cape a mini game of 'Dodge the Aura'.
