A Mathematical Analysis between Press the Attack and Conqueror

TehNACHO··6 votes·12,069 views
  • Based on Volibear auto attacking with no items or other runes (9% Attack Speed bonus)
  • Timer starts from first auto attack hitting

Here's the graph with all my math

To read, points listed in red are Press the Attack, Points listed in Blue are Conqueror without the bonus, and points listed in green are Conqueror with the bonus. Volibear's Level, his W's rank, and the enemy's "resistance" (armor) are left variable and you can play with them.

If you can read my graph, there's a lot of little bits you can read into, but the most important note is that almost no matter how you play with the variables, Conqueror's DPS (the sloped Green Line) has a higher slope than Press the Attack's. What this means is that in a 1v1 slugfight, Conqueror will almost always win out. This further compounded with the fact that Conqueror's True Damage component, if converted to a damage bonus, has a higher bonus than Press the Attack's at all but extremely low levels when the enemy has extremely little armor or resistance. Not only does Conqueror have a higher %Bonus Damage, but it also grants Bonus AD so any AD ratios on your champion's kit is further utilized. Conqueror also has the advantage that if you are using a melee champion, you don't need to reset it like you would Press the Attack after so and so seconds and it's a self buff, vs a targetted debuff.

There are some areas where Press the Attack is significantly stronger. Because of the Adaptive Burst damage it applies, especially as you go higher in levels, it ramps up damage far more quickly under the 4 second mark. This is especially true for any particular animation canceling combo, applying the Burst damage far quicker and allowing even more time to put in damage before the 4 second mark. The targetted debuff aspect of it is also far stronger in the case of teamfights when multiple members can focus down one target. This is ignoring that I calculated these numbers starting Conqueror's timer from the first auto attack hitting. Because Conqueror's higher damage output when the bonus is applied, and because you can start a fight with Conqueror by hitting minions or possibly from light poke leading up to the fight, you can start the fight immediately with Conqueror's bonus in effect and massively outpace Press the Attack even before the aforementioned 4 second mark. This makes it the far more superior tool in laning where you're almost always "in combat", whereas Press the Attack may be more significant to Junglers who look towards upfront Burst and Team play, and don't have the advantage of being in combat all the time to start the fight with Conqueror's bonus.

In summary, in 1v1 duels, Conqueror is the superior option in almost all areas if the fight lasts more than 4 seconds or if you can start off the fight immediately with Conqueror's bonus in effect. On the other hand, in skirmishes and Teamfights, if you need to capitalize on Burst windows shorter than 4 seconds and have teammates to focus fire a particular target, Press the Attack is far more preferable.

they are completly different keystones

press the attack is more about teamplay and lockdown as it amplifies your entire team's damage on a target by 12% press the attack is also more about bursting, renekton takes it into squishy match ups because he can proc it so fast and applies so much damage instantly without waiting 4 seconds

conqueror is more about dueling and tank killing, something that press the attack can't do

So we agree then.

This kind of analysis is pointless. You're totally looking at the runes wrong.

PTA gives you absolutely nothing unless you get 3 attacks off. It's not simply x amount of time. Your target can use CC or mobility to make it harder. PTA can waste a lot of its potential when you are forced to use damage abilities before you proc it. So it's honestly pretty terrible on most champs.

Conqueror can be prepped before engaging, making it far more practical on most champs.

on the other sie conqueror realy NEEDs this 4s till it procs. You not can always prep it beore engaging. Like dancing around baron or dragon or sieging a lane there the range champ clears the minions to fast to let you even damage something. Also Conqueror falls of under cc too. 3s window can be fast over, than you would again need 4s to ramp it up.

Also a lot of champions use autoattacks mainly or even autoattack reset abilitys/ autoattack modified abilitys.

So i would argue conqueror has its fair downsides too.

Theory behind the formulas ? Define the variables ? :/

Agreed this analysis is biased. You are only taking AAs into account, if you are using a single ability in there (that does damage) it skews the math completely.

Not really. What matters for the most part is the math of it. An auto attack could be replaced by a spell and work out the same mathematically. Naturally a mathematical analysis for simplicity sake is going to just assume some basic things. The actual game play is going to depend. Mathematically a champion like Yorick or Illaoi always win, but obviously the win rat is around 50%.

Excellent Post! I couldn't quite understand the math you used though :D In my laymen math I calculate formulas as such;

Conqueror= (DMG X 0.2) + (0.8 DMG x reductions) = Total Damage PTA = (DMG X Reductions) x 1.10 = Total Damage

If we assume both are proced math wise with a base ability damage of 100 vs 50% reduction I get the following *Conqueror= (100 x 0.2) + (80 x 0.5) = 60 TOTAL Damage Press the Attack= (100 x 0.5) x 1.10 = 55 TOTAL Damage

*Conqueror proc'ed adds an extra 10-35 physical damage based on level. My math is neglecting this just so we can compare magic/physical damage of any ability/attack during proc.

I ran a practice mode with Irelia at level 4 with no items vs practice dummies which have 50% reductions.

Base Damage is 75 so vs a 100 armor (50% reduction) in damage that equals 37.5 or what registers as 38 damage to dummy.

Conqueror Proc- Auto Attack goes from 75 base to 89 Base ( which is a plus +14). 17 TRUE damage 35 Physical TOTAL PER HIT= 52 Damage/hit (though target dummies don't seem to add it correctly and just say 35)

*just multiply this x hits or per seconds of battle if you want a rough DPS to compare to PTA.

Press The Attack Hit 1) 38 Hit 2) 38 Hit 3) 69 Hit 4) 40 (a measly +2 dmg after proc) Hit 5) 40 repeat

Assuming a pre proced conqueror it just blows PTA outa the water honestly. at 3 hits conqueror= 156 total damage PTA = 145 total damage

Like you said, laning phase conqueror is the obvious choice. PTA has the advantage only vs a non proced conqueror in the first few seconds, or potentially in a team fight where allies will be dealing damage to the target as well.
