Season 2 was what riot should have followed instead of destroyed

http://www.lolking.net/summoner/euw/21335235 (warning: if you doubt any of my example feel free to ask i can link you a proof) cause in my league career, all i can remember is season 2 being a balanced meta, then after season 3 it went downhill. Why? let's take a look to how it used to be:

  • -bruisers had atma+some other items that used to make them as tanky as tanks while bringing almost as much damage as adc until the adc had 6 items. this made them playable because in league to balance the burden of being a melee you need this Even old fiora was played in competition while being so trash just because the itemization was great. Every bruisers but Darius (post-hotfixe) were not a trollpick

  • -AP bruisers: Some mobile mages were a safe pick in toplane like Ahri (she had insane base damage and low scalling making people building her like an AP bruiser)or AP bruisers Rumble Ryze Karthus Chogath Singed Vladimir Malphite , http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/6/6f/Will_of_the_Ancients_item.png/revision/latest?cb=20130319091645 was a thing, and if you had 2 AP, you could buy two Wota effectivelly giving to your two ap champions 40% spellvamp, and 110 AP (aura used to be stackable). it was a high risk choise because if the enemy team had a bruiser, in late game he would destroy your 2 ap while being tanky as hell, but in midgame double ap used to deal so much damage if you destroyed them in 20/30 min then the strat was good.

  • ranged top laners: they used to be overpowered in laning phase Jayce (even after the hotfixe)KennenNidalee , but at least bruisers had a chance against them in late game.... except against nidalee.

  • Mages: they used to actually fall off late game except those that we called "APC" (ap carry) such as Cassiopeia Karthus Ryze who had ability cooldown as low as an adc autoattack. Burst mages such as Kassadin Brand + any burst mage you can imagine were all useless after 35 min. but they were still picked. They had an insane mid game, Brand used to 100-0 a whole team in the right conditions with just an item or two. AND THEIR UTILITY Morgana picked in every games because of her ulti that used to deal 750(+1.6 AP) while stunning people for a long time. same for Orianna . And thanks god, they used to fall off late game execpt Anivia .

  • The jungle: Everyone remembers how the jungle was. monsters gave like no golds, just experience, and junglers were forced to get gold items. Which means that a jungler you were picked if you had one of those 3 things: -high base damage -utility -good early game presence Tanks used to be usefull, tanky, not dealing tons of damage , bringing a powerful utility, and not picked in 100% of the games (except alistar) fun to play, in other word: the bestRammus Alistar Amumu Chogath Nautilus Malphite . Bruisers were also played in the jungle if they had reasons to be picked: Skarner LeeSin XinZhao (post-rework)Trundle DrMundo JarvanIV Rengar (being played full tank in competition) Fiddlesticks 3 seconds 500 range fear

  • assassins: season 2 had a low amount of assassins released, Fizz Talon Evelynn (post rework) but mostly, you can remember the tanky assassin dps mage Diana .

Tl,dr: In season 2, ranged champ+bruisers+ap bruisers were viable top lane AT THE SAME TIME Mages and assassins were viable in midlane at the same time bruisers and tanks being viable in the jungle at the same time

what riot did in the next seasons: -nerf bruisers -nerf Wota -buff assassins -completly imbalance the game by making jungle items, while nerfing tanks

what season 3/4/5/6 made: -top lane being either ranged champs or bruisers -mid lane being either assassins or mages -jungle being either tanks, or bruisers like Vi JarvanIV

weak point of season 2: -item 3153 not being in the game. though i don't know if it's a weak point, since this item has always been imbalanced and now can't be buffed without being broken -Evelynn being banned if you played her before the rework -LeeSin obviouslee -TwistedFate

they came close to good overal balance in season 5

then they quadrupled snowballing and damage after hard nerfing anythign tanky

now this game has become a who can twitch like an autist on meth for the first 10 minutes

nothing strategic or skill based left in the game really and season 7 isn't looking to be much of an improvement, at least we getting soloq but the damage is going up accross the board again

meanwhile engage tanks get what a useless keystone, it looks great at first untill you realize it only rewards you for missplaying let me clarify, if i run in with sion R 5 peeps Q 5 peeps then the sheidl is already gone and i wouldn't have gotten any use out of it if i run in and miss everyone then manage to q 1 guy i get a fat shield for a short time and people will ignore me for the duration, they can do that because i just used my 2 most valuable spells and they are on cooldown now.

calling it now season 7 might just be were the ship really sinks, overal game health, gameplay wise is going down th drain further, reintroduction of soloq won't fix matchmaking too much since so many people got boosted its either chaos time hard reset or a full season of still crappy matchmaking soft reset

Let's not forget league lost about 20% of its players during season 6, that is a big proponent of why we are getting soloq back but it wont make the game great again.

Damage creep, mobility creep & cc creep as well as the excessive snowballing needs to be addressed

It's almost like strong tanks drive the game towards more teamfights and many people find actual teamfights more fun than the assassin shitfests you get when tanks are crap.

let me clarify, if i run in with sion R 5 peeps Q 5 peeps then the sheidl is already gone and i wouldn't have gotten any use out of it

If you do that you've already won the fight. Don't look at the absolute dream scenario, because it almost never happens. More realistically you ult in and hit 2 people getting the surrounding bonus for a couple more. In this case the shield is far better because the 3 people who you didn't hit are deincentivised from hitting you until the shield drops.

Still you're not wrong that it's bad on Sion, it's more aimed at jungle tanks than lane tanks, Grasp will still be far better for getting you through the lane phase.

First, that example applies only to Sion. There is no other champion that can hard cc an entire team for the entire duration of the shield (not who would actually want the keystone, anyways).

Second, the shield is only wasted if all nearby enemies are cc'd for the entire duration. In Sion's case, it is extremely rare for the enemy to stay clumped up close enough together to get a 5-man ult off, especially at max power. Any team who does is comprised of idiots. Most of the time, he'll hit 1-3 people, making the extra shield perfect for when the rest of the enemies retaliate.

Courage of the Colossus is a fantastic mastery for any initiator with hard cc. Are there cases where it will be wasted? Yes. But the same goes for every mastery.

RogueWill1 votes

Uhm....I'm here Sejuani. AoE long stun followed by a almost snare slow?

Glory ln Death1 votes

1.75 second stun, and the slow isn't hard cc, so it doesn't stop the enemy from attacking you or using spells. She's very good for cc, too, but she can't take the entire team out of the fight for the duration of the shield.

RogueWill1 votes

Theoretically yes, they have time and can attack you. On practice thou that shield will be wasted. The stun alone takes half the duration, and after her Ult+E+Thunderlods pretty much everyone will have considerable damage so they will most likely will try to disengage instead of fighting back, and even if they fight back you probably will get ignored since you just used pretty much all your kit and the only thing left is the second part of your W which will hit regardless if you attack her or not.

Glory ln Death1 votes

You're right, and as I said before: in the best case scenario (every member of their team is cc'd) the shield will usually get wasted. But the best case scenario doesn't always happen.

Most of the time, you'll hit 1 to 3 enemies and have to worry about the rest of the team jumping on you to try and stop the rest of your engage.

Also, the shield is fantastic for tower dives - a 1500+ shield will let you ignore any non-cc'd enemies and tank 2 or 3 tower shots without taking any damage.

RogueWill1 votes

Unlike Sion Sejuani actually have high chances to hit her ult so in Sejuani case you usually hit 3 people on your average ult and best case scenario aren't out of the question. Anyway I'm probably not going to use that keystone anyway unless it gives an obscene amount of HP or the shield duration gets buffed considerably, uncontrollable shields are pretty much useless on true tanks anyway since you receive most of the damage prior initiation and not really after it. I see it more viable on chessy set ups like Fiddlesticks with his silence (not sure if the silence procs the keystone thou)

Glory ln Death1 votes

The silence won't proc the shield, but his fear will! That would be cool - ulting into the whole team, fearing someone, and getting a huge shield.

RogueWill1 votes

Well that is sorta bad, poor fiddlestick. The shield would allow him to delay his zhonyas and with the extra movement speed from his passive he woudl be quite a threat, but if only his fear cast the shield the shield will be too small and he is probably better off with some other mastery.

Glory ln Death1 votes

The size of the shield depends on how many enemies are near you, not how many you cc. He'll get the massive 5-man shield even though he only fears one person.

But he still has to go all the way into the Resolve tree, which isn't the best choice for him.

However, like you said, it can be a fun, cheesy pick.

RogueWill1 votes

I did not knew that. So is probably a chessy tactic then.

Resolve tree is not so bad for fiddlestick if he goes for the movement speed and regen parts of the tree, is nott he best sure but the ferocity tree is just as bad and since the dots don't refresh the deathfire touch anymore he is left with a proper keystone, some people is surge, some people use windspeakers. Honestly the only thing he loses is the MR pen which could be compensated with runes since you are taking some defensive masteries anyway.

Btw...some people on high elo currently run strength of the ages on him, so is not as farfetched as you think.

Glory ln Death1 votes

Hmmmm... I like it. That could be something cool to try out then. I had been thinking of other cheesy builds before, like the ultimate 1v5 Vayne (terrible, I know), but there may actually be some other legitimate ideas like that. Other close combat or battle mages - maybe Ryze or Swain?

RogueWill1 votes

ryze will probably like it, but his kit revolves about him choosing whether he wants damage, speedboost or shield, if he doesn't need to pick up the shield anymore it could made the mastery mandatory on him and forcing nerfs out of him.

Glory ln Death1 votes

Well, it does have a longer cooldown than Thunderlord's, so hopefully it wouldn't be considered too much of a problem for him to take it. He'd be able to ignore the shield vs damage choice once, maybe twice, in a team fight.

Glory ln Death1 votes

Holy crap! Think about Warwick or Malzahar or Urgot! Giant shield while they're ulting, so they more safely ult in the middle or at the beginning of a team fight (or just 1v5). Tankwick strikes again!

If you wonder why riot nerfed bruisers, it's simple

the reason is that riot never balanced the game around competition why did they nerf bruisers, when rumble/vlad/jayce were as op as bruisers top? when every other classes than bruisers were as viable as bruisers?

because in non-competition bruisers used to destroy everything.

The game is more or less the most balanced it's ever been at it's current state. With the upcoming Assassin rework and the following Vanguard Update sometime next year most classes will be most generally balanced to a middle ground degree. There will always be outliers but that's like saying season 2 had no outliers. I do agree that top lane has the worst meta right now, being shunted with a majority of the worse picks. But Season 2 was very messy and honestly I'm glad it's gone.

Season 2 was really a good time, friend. I remember the days.

ModCaptainMårvelous5 votes

Completely disagree.

The ranged/melee disparity was still there. The issue was that there were far LESS mid/junglers who were ranged. And the one core who was (Jayce) was picked at a degree so high he was only matched by Ezreal. (Rumble existed, sure, but he wasn't the big pick due to clunkiness. Also Nid was more of a mid-laner and was garbage at the time.)

Vision control was absolutely stupid. It wasn't sensible. It wasn't strategic. It was grabbing an inventory full of wards and farting them all over the map because there was no cap. Remember the 60 minute baron dance that lasted forever? Yeah, I wanted to die too.

Jungling often amounted to who could bring the most utility to a fight and/or had some stupid DPS output. So it was either "you're a meatwall who is a CC bot" or "You're a DPS machine with stupidly good burst. (See: Xin, Lee, etc)

WotA was sometimes picked but it just didn't work well with a majority of casters, sans Vlad and Morde. It was an item that tricked you into thinking spellvamp was as good as lifesteal when it really was a poor item.

Itemization was even more stat-stick than before, which boiled down to who did the best. Surprise, Corki/Ezreal/Graves are the best. If they're banned, go for Tier 3-4 at best.

Not sure how you can list Kassadin and "falling off" in the same sentence in a Season 2 world.

The bottom line is that Season 2 had ALL THE PROBLEMS this season and the seasons before it had. Yet instead of addressing the problems, they exacerbated them in an effort to keep the status quo. The ranged disparity became worse, the jungling became worse (Most of the time) and diversity became worse. It's only in Season 5-6 that we hit a breaking point where these unworked problems reared their heads and forced Riot to address them. And they have been. Despite what people think, ranged ADCs and mages fit the meta more than just being the overall best. Syndra might be good but her counters being weak make her shine more. Emphasis on laning means lane-strong champions shine. The meta is who is good for the job, not who is the absolute best.

Also to note is that we're in the transition period of League. Assassins, Juggernauts, ADCs and Mages all have had reworks. That leaves half the classes untouched. This disparity is also what is causing the ranged power. (Worth noting that Juggernauts were the first attempt while every class since then has been either long range or high mobility.) I'm likely more patient than others about this because Riot has been doing well with their class reworks since juggernauts, despite the disapproval this will net me. Once we see class reworks for more melee-focused classes, then I'll judge more harshly.

But to say Season 2 was the pinnacle ignores a lot of the obvious problems the game had and to assign much more importance to a time where nostalgia reigns and we weren't smart enough to see things clearly.

Teridax681 votes

I agree with this. It's easy to look back on Season 2 as the Age of Melee when melee doesn't feel all that great right now, but the truth is that Season 2 was perhaps the actual worst season in League of Legends. Champion and build diversity were at an all-time low, snowballing was at an all-time high, entire classes of champions were either OP or near-unplayable, and the dominance of the Metagolem really did end up determining many games at champion select, simply based on who got the team with the most bruisers. We received a ton of new champions, but at such a cost in diversity and long-term game health that Riot is still trying to fix its mistakes from then to this day. Even as melee dominated, they did so for all the wrong reasons, and if we had stuck with Season 2's model of making melee strong, the game would have stagnated for years, as ranged classes would not be able to compete with the raw statistical superiority of fighters and their items.

CasterGilgamesh1 votes

i also agree people are letting nostalgia get the best of them league of was a fun game back in the day and its only gotten better riot has been trying yet no one seems to notice. people are so easily able to look at the bad things but never look at the good.

I think they did that match on the patch 3 patches after the patch worlds was played on? Something like that. So no, none of the preseason changes had made it yet.

My only point was that, technically speaking, neither of those champs were played in competitive that season. It was just a minor clarification for your post, thats all.

It was different in S2, there was an IEM played before the preseason 3 patch at the end of the season. Preseason 3 actually didn't start until December, worlds ended in mid October, so there was plenty of time to slot in the IEM in November.

Nah, the snowball state of affairs we have slogged through for 10 months had nothing to do with DQ. That was 100% the removal of all early game vision tools, introduction of keystones to increase early game damage outputs, and changes to make the early game grant more lopsided gold advantages that could no longer be overcome by good objective control since RNG drakes give random stats instead of gold to the whole team.

None of that has anything to do with DQ. And it all made the game much much worse.

That's like saying the ice cream man didn't sell you ice cream because you didn't get a haircut from the barber across the street.

Your failed attempt at an analogy is noted.

The major difference between a diamond pride player and a bronze chaos player is the failure to adapt. If you are unable to adapt to the changes the game goes through, it will seem "imbalanced" or "unfair" but good players will always find a way to get an edge over the people that fail to adapt. That being said; Dynamic queue caused all of the problems of S6.

You cannot adapt to playing against premades through skill , the only winning response to constantly facing premades is to play a premade yourself. Towards the end they realized that DQ caused all of the problems and will correct this mistake in S7. It's not complicated.

Lol, why would I lie? Especially when there are screenshots of me playing pretty much all 7 of my publicly known accounts? And other board players have played with me on them? And they are occassionally on streams?

I can't hide that these are my accounts, that evidence is plastered all over the boards and is easily found just by looking through my boards history.

Something has you ticked off, I don't really care what it is. You're upset about something in life not going right and you feel a need to take it out on me because your comment got downvoted for being an inaccurate statement and this displeases you. It's not like I downvoted it. I've been adamant since last December that DQ was a very very bad thing. You can even find evidence of THAT in board profile post history.

Here's one good place I spoke my mind on that topic: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/ELcVMlWb-would-you-rather-have-a-true-solo-queue-or-a-return-to-a-duosolo-queue

So no, you're just butthurt you got downvoted. And you're lashing out at a person you feel did it because his comment expanded on yours and made it clear that the fact of the matter was that DQ was only one problem among many this season. So some random people upvote my comment (mostly because its true and makes sense) and down voted yours (mostly because DQ wasn't the ONLY issue this season) and this is the way you try to act to feel superior. Pretty shallow mate. I've never been rude or offensive to you.

No, this is just you not wanting to accept reality. Not wanting to accept there are players better than you. Not wanting to accept you've been wrong on occasion about things relating to this game. If you don't want to be upset by downvotes then don't post something silly like "The only problem this season was DQ". Thats a really silly and false thing to post. Didn't have massive problems with balance? Now you're showing your rose-tinted glasses. Supports and secondary supports (I am talking about junglers, obviously) built 1 or maybe two Gp10 items and then spammed wards and Oracle's elixir. Top lane being dominated by Irelia and her bruiser friends who had all the stuff you'd want in a champion.

While I agree on that late S2 felt better than almost all of S3 and early S4, it still had a lot of balance problems. The thing with that is, without the LCS and the other regional leagues to consistently showcase broken stuff, a lot of it flew under the radar. Also, the general skill level and understanding of the game was far worse than now.
