Garen difficulty rating.

Why is his difficulty rated as high as Lux's? Like seriously, does Riot think Garen, the easiest champion in the game, the most mechanically simple champion is on difficulty level with a pure skill shot mage? What are they smoking if they think Garen is mid tier difficulty, because whatever they are, i want some.

because at any decent mmr, hes actually difficult to play.

he also has some nuances to him that take a lot of practise to learn. i think one of the most difficult things to get down on garen is to know when to ult without either waiting too long, giving your opponent chance to escape/possibly waste damage, or ulting too early and have him survuive on a sliver of health.

due to the dependency on missing hp, and the damage being reduced by mr, this is more difficult than you might think and makes the ult damage heavily vary from target to target. means finding the right moment to ult takes experience.

No I understand, it's just Lux in general is really straight forward in terms of skill cap and how it is to pick her up. Garen's around the same scale, that's why the difficulty bars are the same, since mechinically there is a difference, but learning curve/skill cap wise there isn't.

Even if they are the same, anything on Garen's level of difficulty should be like a 1.

his abilities are easy and straight forward to use, but at the same time this also makes him more difficult to play as it is just as easy to defend against his abilities.

garens difficulty is mostly about reaction, strategic thinking and positioning. at the same time youre forced to take risks by putting yourself into arms length of the enemy.

lux is not necessarily more difficult to play because she has skillshots. if youre not up against an assassin for example she take less of a risk while being effective.

fishing for snares, and poking can be easy depending who youre playing against.

of course you cant just willy nilly spam and waste your spells against any champion. some will punish you for it by gap closing on you and blowing you up.

but generally speaking lux takes less of a risk while participating in fights, and sieges due to her long range. and even when she cant kill her opponents she can still be an effective support. she has a better fallback pattern. if garen cant survive fights, or duel his intended target, there is not really much else he can do.

LOL! Thinking and Garen in the same sentence? Please tell me you're joking.

Well, yeah. No Champion is Brain Dead.

For instance, when to use your Q. Do you lead with it? You can, so they can't Flash out of your Spin that's coming after your Q. But the problem here is Q is also your Escape... so if you Engage with it and they have friends in the Brush, you're in for a time.

When to W? Save it for a Low HP Escape, so you might be able to stand up to that Cait Ult while you are heading back to your side after killing their Jungle? Or use it going in so you can chunk them while taking less damage from them early?

Who to Ult? This isn't Darius with a Reset Ult. You get ONE choice. Do you pop the lowest thing near you? Do you dive through hell for the Villain? Or do you use it to Pop the Tank, because they have the most HP and it works on Percent Missing Execute so you could get way more damage on them than a Squish (A Tank with 5,000 HP at 20% Health has 1000 HP, Garen can smash that, but an ADC with 2,000 HP at 20% Health only has 400 HP... why Ult for only 400 Damage?)

Garen is full of Micro decisions that matter.

And, of course, you have to GET to them before you can even make these decisions.

A lot of thought goes into Garen if you want to play him successfully at Higher Elos... which means a lot of thought should go into Garen at Lower Elo so you don't fall off when you do climb.

I'm sure Cowsep can make a very strong case that Master Yi takes an insane level of both Ability and Knowledge to MASTER, especially to such a level as Cowsep has.

Some Champions can be very easy to Learn, but just haven't learned them doesn't mean much. Mastering them is the key.

There are no brain dead Champion, not if you have Mastered them.

There are brain dead Players, that think the lowest level of understanding required for a Champion is good enough.

Idk, some people just don't understand the concept of a difficulty that is not "mechanical". Well there's why there's low elo people I guess, since this game is 5% mechanics and 95% overall game knowledge and understanding of what to do and when, knowing each champions strengths and weaknesses. Like, when I think about it, hardest champions to play in high elo aren't actually high mechanical champions, it's the so-called braindead champions that get kited easily because you really have to pull off a good strategy if you don't want to get pathetically kited and melted. Meanwhile other champs have retarded mobility/CC and safety nets yet 'wow so skilled muh skillshot'

to varying degrees. a lot of champions have very versatile gameplay. they can react to changing circumstances a lot better.

whtever you do with garen, youll have to plan out the whole fight in your head already before youre going in on an engage.

you dont have the freedom of a lategame jax for example who can react with offensive and defensive mobility to pull back out of a fight when things are going south.

basically if youre in the wrong spot on garen. you will die. your higher defense will just delay the inevitable.

while a lot of other champions have get out of jail free buttons that can still save their asses.

lee sins ability to engage and disengage willy nilly is ridiculous for example. whenever a fight doesnt go his way, he presses r and walks away. or he w's over a wall. or q's over to a minion/jungle camp. doing this is not mechanically difficult.

for melee opponents. and he probably talks mostly about the lane phase. still doesnt mean he wont change his opinion again, especially after the boot enchant removal, which hit his overall mobility again.

tbh, that statement is not even true. almost every melee champion in the game has some sort of ability to outplay him. be it mobility, or something as simply as an olaf axe.

riot repertior did a fantastic job on the garen rework. but lets be honest. thats mostly due to the fact that he listened to actual garen mains PBE feedback when he worked on it.

if he had gone trough with his original plans of "tactical counterplay", garen would have slowed himself by 30% on his spin while hitting all enemy units, including champions. thats just plain dumb and would have completely trashed him, considering he would never have been able to stick to anyone. a simple movement speed buff in any champions kit would have allowed them to just walk straight out of it at any time. they would have had to tune up his spin damage to compensate so much that he would turn into a ridiculously binary champion.

garen was always a champ who had difficulties keeping himself viable in higher divisions due to the fact that his tactical counterplay is so obvious. this is also what kept him entirely out of the pro scene for now, even directly after his rework release. for some reason riot repertoir seems to have difficulties to understand this himself. just because he works at riot and champion kits, doesnt mean hes always right. especially when he doesnt seem to have a lot of experience playing these champions himself. he also worked on some of the mages for the mid season update that completely crashed in viability as a result, and were in need of major buffs to the point of hotfixes. he tends to undertune champions.

the actual kit he gave him after listening to feedback put garen into the best position he had been pretty much since his release. he was viable at all skill ranges, at least into plat without being overbearing. decent winrate overall between 52% and 54%, noticably below 50% for people who were new to him, noticably higher for people who were experienced on him. he finally felt as effective as any other champ if you were experienced on him. even without being a pick in the competitive scene.

he was this stable through significant meta shifts at the end of the season and preseason, through all the changes up until the mage update. which was pretty damn impressive considering the scope of all these changes.

its only the recent general gameplay changes that hit his viability, and he needs some buffs to compensate for the loss of overall mobility. the game environment changing and champion getting nerfed or buffed by it is something that happens very often. but his kit itself is very balanced right now.

even jax who has been balanced for 2 years straight needed tune ups now and then, and so will garen occationally.

so kiting or outmaneuvering him is not counterplay? please. how many garens do you see every day?

people think for some reason that they should be able to easily counterplay juggernauts like garen and darius when theyre already in melee range (which is possible, even if difficult at that point), when their counterplay mostly happens before they make it into your face.

preventing them to run straight up to you in the first place and pummeling you to death is how to counterplay them.

its like expecting to be able to counterplay an adc on a melee champ, when you let the adc kite you. youre not going to win a fight by throwing olaf axes at a jinx only, and youre not going to win a fight against a jugg by taking him head on in melee without the attempt to kite and outmaneuver him.

garen is fast for a juggernaut, but its not even on the level of udyr or shyvana. hes still slow compared to the average in this game and he doesnt have the pentakill potential darius does for being slightly faster than him.

TyroneWatermelon1 votes

I was talking about mechanical counterplay, Not simple game logic. Unless you kite,as a ranged which are 65% of the game(think about melee) You can't dodge enchanted autoattack, can't counterplay press-a-button-for-damage reduction, can't counterplay judgement, either you are in range,or not, depends on movement speed and mobility of both. You also can't counterplay point and click execute with high base damage. Conclusion?- you can't mechanically counter, dodge, outplay, and nothing you can do without simply not being in range, and that's not mechanical counterplay. A champion is certainly unbalanced when it takes triple the effort to play against them, than with them.enter Garen, the easiest champion in the game.

Critmaster Garen1 votes

{quoted}

You also can't counterplay point and click execute with high base damage.

no empowered auto attack in this game has a large amount of mechanical counterplay. no auto attack at all does. that includes adc auto attacks and abilities like garens q, or wukongs, or nasus, or gangplanks q or jax w.

so this is not really an argument.

his ult actually does have mechanical counterplay due to the % missing hp scaling. shields, heals and other sustain options used in the right moment can diminish his ult damage significantly, even when you have the villain mark. even an adc will survive it by popping a fucking summoner heal.

and when youre not the villain, every defense steroid in the game will do, since it deals diminishable magic damage.

his spins mechanical counterplay is quite obvious. so i dont even need to get into that.

so yea, his q doesnt have mechanical counterplay like any other auto attack or auto attack steroid in the game. and his w doesnt either like any defense steroid in the game. you might aswell say, that jax e doesnt have mechancial counterplay, because it is an ability that is supposed to create counterplay against damage abilities and auto attacks for jax. fuckin nidalees heal doesnt have mechanical counterplay for her opponents.

but his ult and spin which are his two major damage abilties do. you wont win a fight just by landing decisive strikes on your opponent.

you might aswell ask what the counterplay is to getting hit by a cassiopeia w the size of the lane and then point and clicked by her e. whats the counterplay to get hit by an annie q? by a pantheon stun? by a maokai w? by a malzahar e and ult? whats the mechanical counterplay to vaynes auto attacks? to ekkos e and r? i could go on through the entire list of champions.

why is there a double standart, that every single one of garens abilities has to have mechanical counterplay, when the same isnt true for a major part of the champion pool? fact is, that his most threatening ability, the thing that will actually damage you and get you into ult range for him in the first place, is his spin and has plenty mechancial counterplay.

TyroneWatermelon1 votes

Few arguments were acceptable, however, even similiar abilities, not every ability must have a counter, but in garen's case, his ENTIRE kit has no counterplay. His E's "counterplay" is just try not be in range, which is same as melee autoattacks, don't be in range-don't get hit. His ult can be somehow cockblocked by shield, spell shield or surprise LifeLine(Maw)or death revival,BUT I caNNot be avoided whatsoever. With all this, the gameplay expirience against Garen is pure toxic and lacks player skill on garen's side, and player's interaction and counterplay on the enemy side. Only few can natural counter him, such as riven, which is the same no resource spammable, except she just shields his damage, while stunning him,and running away. What a nice fight.

Critmaster Garen1 votes

{quoted}

His E's "counterplay" is just try not be in range,

yes. so it does have counterplay.

its an ability that lasts 3 seconds. thats the time you have to stay out of its very limited range. then its at the very least on a 5 second cooldown window (at 40% cdr) where you can fight him. then you disengage when its back up, then you reengage again.

on the contrary to actual melee or ranged auto attacks it doesnt have 100% uptime.

whats the counterplay to vaynes entire kit? her passive is a buff. her q is a mobility tool/auto attack reset/empowered auto attack. her w is a passive buff. her e is point and click disengage. her ult is a passive buff.

she has even less mechanical counterplay than garen in her kit, since everything she has is taylored to not giving you a chance to get into melee range, or out of her auto attack range. and none of her abilities are avoidable nor can you deny her any of her buffs. you cant even itemize against her auto attacks to a major degree.

in fact all adc live off direct targeted damage that has less mechanical counterplay than a garen spin. not only for melees.

so does that mean all adc need more mechanical counterplay? maybe we should turn their auto attacks into skillshots.

Of course, low elo scrub or not, I don't really care, that's based on a team based format, I just take into account my INDIVIDUAL performance which easily tops a Platinum player laning phase/outplay potential wise.

Also, cowsep himself told people he isn't good at league and he's peaked Diamond 2. My point again, has been proven. Trick2g has yet to go beyond Diamond 1, mainly because he's unable to stick to his guns for long, he's just in it for the fun portion and the whole persona of TRICK. As for boxbox, he's just a stale OTP. Nothing special.

Once again, try not to argue something without true intelligence, you might just turn out in the losing end of the conversation being held. Furthermore, ranking, the ELO system specifically within LOL accounts team oriented statistics, therefore I can, team wise , be bad, but individually, those boundaries are entirely different.

Regardless, a Plat IV saying anything isn't something to think a second thought about, you're nothing, have been nothing besides season 4 where you were actually decent, and always will be with that attitude.

Mfw trihards vent their anger at lower elo players.

Meh, EGO's already got you self-absorbed in this little world of the game called League of Legends, you've essentially already fallen into riot's pocket and are just a brainless individual making countless smurf just to smurf and get diamond over and over again. Repetitive gaming is the last thing I need, and perma'ed? Cool, good luck with whatever you're planning to get at with the OH ITS SO EASY GETTING to D2.

Hell if it wasn't you'd definitely be trash, and yet you only got to D2? After how many smurfs? Seems you haven't improved in the slightest. What a shame, you'd think some self-absorbed, narcissistic mentally inept guy like yourself whose so good at this game would be better, you're probably stuck in Diamond because you're too busy feeding your ego nonsense by acquiring diamond on multiple accounts LMAO.

Silver 5 after 1k games, 100 of the last which were purposefully demoting games, but ofc you wouldn't believe that, your ego's so big it'd fit inside your ass and still pop out the other end.

Regardless, you've been banned once probably because of this attitude, and I'd just not waste my time with someone so low as you yourself as a human being, you've already fallen to a degraded point that is just embarrassing.

For now, I'll just aim to Challenger on the new account, and by the time I get there, the last thing I'll care about is sharing the path to it, or how good I am, I have no such ego, instead I'll just mind my business, go pro, and help others.

Here's my quote for ya, maybe it'll have those old ass gears in your head turning again :

"Teach someone, teach yourself, the enemy makes one of the best teacher, and only your mind proves true."

I'm an intellectual, an artist, and novelist. I've already published works, but I let that information leak on its own or keep it to myself, since I've only published 1 work of each. Regardless, good luck with feeding your ego, it'll be only a matter of time before you land yourself another ban kiddo!

This is a stale conversation, you've clearly already lost, so I'll be taking my leave, good luck 20+ year old child. :^)

I honestly dont give a rats ass what my current rank is im far more proud of no one being able to touch my #1 sona world spot on lolskill for the past 4 seasons

im also proud of dumpstering kids like nightblue/Iwilldominate on stream when I am literally doing a troll sightstoneless support build that takes all the kills I play this game to dick around and compete against myself

you think your going to go pro with 1k games and still silver 5? im sorry but you apparently lack the potential to be challenger tier on this game its already been proven because you have already peaked in silver 5

the only person here that has "already lost" is you first you act like a badass and talk shit and then I point out that I am far more successful on this game than you are and now you are trying to play the "no life" card saying I have spent too much time on this game? I have managed to reach that elo multiple times on several accounts AND I STILL HAVE NOT PLAYED 1k GAMES THIS SEASON

you have spent way more fucking time on this game than I have dude

PS: no one gives a fuck if your "published" anyone can get published on lulu

Lux is very forgiving and easy

Twitch Chat1 votes

real hard waiting to land a long range snare and then dumping all your burst on an immobile target.

Azuré1 votes

Lux isn't a very mechanically demanding champion nor is she a very INTELLIGENCE based champion, if you want that, go play my mains Yasuo and Zed. Otherwise, don't come here thinking difficulty ratings doesn't include things besides MECHANICS.

LankPants1 votes

There's some inherent difficulty with playing 100% melee champs, it takes a certain amount of skill to deal with issues like kitting properly.

People take the difficulty meter seriously?

Lux and Garen are both easy.

Why do I get the feeling OP is butthurt that he gets raped by Garen repeatedly, and refuses to learn howto kite him...

Weiner the Pooh1 votes

Actually no, i haven't seen one in a long time. I just logged in, saw he was in free week and that his purple bar was at 5 and laughed and hwo dumb that was. Because Garen is not anywhere near difficult or challenging or remotely take any skill. So then i made this thread asking why it was rated that high, especially on such a brain dead champion.

Whomp3r1 votes

lux has a skill shot that allows her other two to land and is has quite the range.

Kyrrion1 votes

Playing Garen is as difficult as the enemy team decides to makes it for you.

Mechanically no, hes not.

Mechanically no, hes not.

mechanic difficulty =/= strategic difficulty. both are important when playing a champion. and garen has a higher strategic difficulty than champions who are more mobile or have more range to work with. failed decisions will fuck you over harder than they will on other champions.

miss a binding or an ult on a lux, and if youre not fighting an assassin, it can have little consequence. can. like i said it depends who youre playing against.

get a fail engage on a garen, and you get locked up and killed. pretty much every single time.

get blocked out of a fight by cc, and your team essentially fights a 4v5. comparably its much harder to prevent a lux from doing anything at all, than a garen.

TyroneWatermelon1 votes

Lux isn't high either. Anyway, don't look at the difficulty Riot is rating, thy aren't true. Garen should be 1/10 though
