Why Hide Elo?

The hidden variable referred to as 'elo' or 'mmr' (match making rating?) influences how matches are made. It is also balanced such that we roughly win or lose 50% of our games. However, the variable is hidden. Which sucks, since oftentimes we have friends who are not in our ELO, whether higher or lower, and playing with them, or talking with them, is like playing or talking about a totally different game.

For example, I would tell my friend about a champ I want her to play and tell her how good I did with that champ. But when I'm top, I fought a Shen or a Tahm Kench or a Gangplank. Meanwhile, when she was top with the champ, she fought a Tryndamere twice and a Fiora. Worst, I remember a time when I only saw Katarina mid--but now never see her, only to find out my friend sees Katarina fairly often. So what's the point of hiding ELO? Particularly if champion diversity is ELO specific, to the point where each ELO is a radically different experience (as champions in game make a radically different experience [e.g. a fed Lee Sin and a fed Khazix have two different feels].)

I'm pretty sure they hide the exact formula on MMR due to the fact it can't be abused if it's not public knowledge. I mean because lets face it, if they gave the chance for it to be abused it'd be like dynamic Q and five man premades.

Oh that's a good point. I guess you could make a five man and choose whichever ELO you wanted . . . peculiar as that is.

That's weird to me, too, because the fact that they do leads me to believe that it's based on more than just wins/losses. The vanilla Elo system, and even some of it's more complex variants (those which adjust for how streaky you are or if you're a new player) isn't based on any more than that.

I'd go so far as to guess that the whole "grade system" is actually an experiment for metrics that could augment mmr.

I believe the reason they put the "rank" system, which is just a cosmetic facade on the Elo system, is to "alleviate anxiety" about individual matches affecting your rating so much.

Trouble is, now there's anxiety about LP +/-, promos, and bronze/silvers queuing with golds/plats. I don't think they gained anything with the trade, but lost clarity. RIP.

This is the reason. It's a nice-looking, easy to understand UI overlay of MMR.

As an aside, MMR is based on more than win/loss. I remember that they introduced an offset for playing a new champ for instance. I'm sure there are more variables, but I don't know/recall them.

Except it was at one point shown.

Because most people here are shit statisticians and shit players that think a 40/0/40 score is a good sign

No they don't. They think that means that their team stole 40 kills from them so they couldn't carry. Shit bronze team.
