Solo ranked queue REALLY needs to be changed.

First off. I am not raging about an elo hell or because I feel like I belong elsewhere. (I am S3 currently) I do, but that's not why I am posting this. The solo ranked queue system... is without a doubt the poorest ranking system and match making system I have experienced since I started gaming. And that is before match making systems even existed. There are many reasons for this... #1 - Elo An elo system is a system that was created for chess. A 1 vs 1 player game, where you are not forced to rely on strangers to advance in a ranked tier. That is not only unfair, its just plain stupid. They don't do that with sports teams. If they did, Jesus Christ. People would get murdered. #2 - You have to carry Because of the last bit... you often are stuck with players who honestly appear as if they let their 5 year old little sister play for a game on their account. At that point you are forced to carry games. Which yes, if you are good you can. But in a ranked system it should not be based on "who can carry the hardest". It should have 5 people of equal skill levels, against 5 other people of the same skill level. MMR does not judge that closely enough, because win / loss is a huge factor in that, not performance. I am currently gaining between 23 and 26 LP a game, and lose at the most 18. But that doesn't matter when we come to my next point. #3 - Win streaks required for promotion despite MMR Yeah... MMR is great and all. You can get LP at a quicker rate than you lose it all day, it doesn't matter when you have to not only win 3 or 4 games to get to 100 lp, you then have to continue that streak for two games. Then people often get trolls, dcs, and people who don't understand basics of the game like deep warding or when not to push or what over extending is. . . then boom. Back to 70 80 lp, gotta win 3 more games. Put back an hour or three just because of that. A new system that takes into account members of a players team having disconnected, had extraordinarily bad scores or anything like that and not punishing them for that (which we are, we lose MMR, Elo, LP, and promo's because of that all the time) should be set up for the solo queues. Also, when your MMR is so much higher than the league that you gain that much LP. Promos should be wavered. #4 - Mismatches I play LAN with people ranging from B4 to D5. The guy who is B4 consistently carries his weight... he doesn't make stupid mistakes, he even makes good push / baron calls, and often beats plat players in lane. The way this ranked system works in the solo queue needs to be fixed. I don't care who disagrees. If you are high diamond or challenger and are able to carry yourself up in a timely manner, then this doesn't apply to you. It applies to the other 99.9% of players. The fact that all the ranked latter is a matter of time, not a matter of skill. That's the issue. And it is. It is a matter of time, and matter of hoping and praying you don't get some kid who makes games nearly unwinnable no matter how hard you carry or how many plays you make. When people don't react to made plays. Therese nothing you can do. I am not getting gold this season, not because of me, but because of strangers who troll worse than 4chan losers. I consistently play well, I LAN I roll over many friends in plat left and right. When players in the lowest of ranks can play better than many players all the way up to plat... that is the extreme sign of an issue that you are to lazy to fix. You're system only works with pre-made ranked teams. It needs to be repaired, stop with the champion updates, and fix the solo ranked queue for what is likely 90%+ of your player base. If you do this the endless train of reports of toxicity and whatever else will end. (I am typically not toxic) But there will be very little toxicity in general. You facilitate bad attitudes when you mismatch players, then you ban people for those bad attitudes because of your idiotic "summoners code", yet leave people who consistently in ranked hold 1:1 kda's and stuff untouched. Its inhuman not to get mad at someone when they prevent you from reaching your goals just because they enjoy getting reactions out of people. Your horrible community that you have created will not be so implosive if you just create a better match making system. That's all.

On the off chance someone from Riot reads this. Don't get me wrong. The game is amazing. One of the best, but the way you set up the solo queue is just demoralizing and it really degrades the game. Rarely do I get a game where everyone on both teams are playing their best and pulling weight... thats all I want. Balanced teams.

Not just Lol, in the future, you will have college, work and social activities where you have to carry the rest of the team. Better yet, reporting someone for being a slacker makes you a jerk and hints weak leadership capability.

I get out of the Marine Corps in 9 months, have a bachelors degree, got married this year, and will be going back for nursing to be a nurse practitioner when I get out of the Marines. I get what I want in the real world on my own. Lol's solo queue is different. I consistently play well, give people kill opportunities, and call objectives. I can't control their behavior or actions, and should not be punished for it.

Didn't know that your classmates being stupid prevented you from passing college, or other people that do bad at their job preventing you from getting the same job

The elo system works great, it doesn't take "high diamond or challenger" as you put it to rank up quickly. If you are 3 divisions higher in skill than you are in current rank carrying is easy. The 2 division discrepancy that a player might have between skill/rank is a small issue and most certainly not worth changing the elo system for something else.

BTW making the system account for dc players would do nothing but bloat the ladder upwards, every game u keep your elo because of it has no value because every1 gained the same elo from other "dc loss prevented" scenarios. I won't address giving loss prevented to games where some1 had a bad score for obvious reasons.

Comparing ranked teams to solo q isn't too good. Ranked teams is significantly easier as you can actually communicate with your team, making these decisions WHILE playing. In normal games you do it on the fly, which takes a lot more "effort" as it isn't a unanimous call you can easily make over a voice chat. Teams is easy mode as you can basically guarantee that you are all committed to the same thing/goal, something you can't do as easily when alone.

I don't know why you bring up KDA as it has really nothing to do with what ranking you are. Yes, usually better players have a better KDA, but if you having a negative KDA results in your team winning, you will still rise.

In regards to carrying yourself, I always thought that was the point of playing the game. There isn't much of a reason for you to rise in the game if you YOURSELF can't even deliver yourself to the level of play you want to be at. Solo Q is all about gauging YOUR skill, not the ability of others to carry you. You can occasionally get carried in a game or two, but you need to have at least a decent proficiency in the game to be able to go upwards in divisions. If you don't, you'll stay where you are because you can't carry yourself. Also if your counter is you like playing tanky/supportive champions, well then you'll either need to transition to playing an actual carry role or you need to improve your current playstyle to a level where you CAN carry. Don't get me wrong, it is great that you want to support/tank and do roles that a lot of players don't like to do, but if you ACTUALLY want to carry yourself, you need to actually play something that can do damage and carry yourself out of your slump or "elo hell".

Mismatches don't mean much except at the highest level of play where queue times are too long and pulls from too many divisions (masters playing with plat 1) and high level players (diamond +) who are smurfing on unranked accounts. The smurfs will eventually go up so you won't have to worry about them. The first issue isn't something you need to worry about as you aren't in this area. Don't get me wrong, I'm not either, it just isn't an problem I will face atm so there isn't anything to worry about it. LAN =/= solo q so I don't really get your point.

Anyways my last thing I'll say is do you have suggestions to actually "FIX" these so called problems? Almost EVERY system has flaws, but it is just weighing those flaws and problems against ones that a different system will have that usually decides how things are implemented. Also if the positives outweigh the negatives. I'm pretty sure if there was already a superior system they would have implemented it and if they do implement it, they would change it after a season, not in the middle of it (unless for some reason it was THAT bad. It wouldn't be particularly fair to those who can actually make it in the system to get it changed just because you yourself can't cope with it.

Idc about promotion. I don't respect the ranks if its attained in solo queue in this game unless its someone who makes it to gold in less than say 30 games, or plat in less than 100. That means either they are profoundly lucky, or carry hard as hell. Idc about rank at all. All I want. Is a team of 5 against a team of 5 who all 10 try their hardest, understand the fundamentals of the game such as deep wards... positioning... all the little things that people die to in low low bronze. I want more than like 1 / 20 games to have EVERYONE on both teams understand the basics. So I can actually enjoy the game as it is supposed to be, not get super fed by some idiot, or get murdered by some super fed guy who some idiot fed. Its not fun. And it ruins what would be a perfect game.

Normally if someone gets to Gold or Plat in those amounts of games they are better than Gold or Plat and simply got to where they cared to get and stopped.

As has been said in numerous posts before this one, the only constant in each game is you. If you want to get higher on the ladder you need to make it so. Yes some games may be unwinnable but for every game you run into like that statistically you will have an equal or greater amount of games that are unloseable.

Another point that is often ignored is that even though someone is at X rank, it does not mean they play at X level on very champion in every roll. Due to this it is unlikely you will ever experience perfectly even games. Every player is uneven in skill across their champion pool and lane. For instance I noticed that you have what looks like an excellent record on Malzahar. If you want to climb the ladder why not spam him instead of jungle?

AbodyHUN6662 votes

I never played at the NA server, but if you expect level 30 players to reach gold in 30 games in order to truly be considered gold they must be koreans. Time really matters in the ranking system, because you will have greater understanding of the game and the mindset of the players around your skill level. Actually most of the games are quite balanced, but people generally don't know how to deal with being behind. They don't know how to avoid trades, where to ward when their turret is destroyed and when to roam. In lower leagues it's better to play champions who can be useful even if your team is bad. For supports try playing zyra, morgana, annie or karma, they are useful with a bad adc and can build ap.

NoDomeAtHome4 votes

Again. I didn't say it was impossible. I said it takes entirely too long due to the nature of the MMR system. The reason I don't run Malzahar is because in these low elo games. I can only carry to a point as a ADC or APC, particularly one who has limited mobility like malz. People in these low elo's (I am speaking about Gold too) don't seem to understand the going ons in team fighting or the fact that team comp matters more than lane counters. Atrocious targeting... little or no peels. Many games are pretty much lost in the champion select screen due to abysmal team comp... for instance... people pick Mord with a team comp that has no CC. Just an example. People in these low elo's typically do not understand all that, and because of that losses happen. But yeah, because peels and things in these elo often are non-existent. Going a champ like malz is a gamble every single time. It doesn't matter how perfect my positioning is if a Kha or Talon or some other assassin with high mobility tunnel me and my front liners don't even attempt to peel. I either... A have to run and poke leaving the rest of the team to fight with an APC... or die. This is a team game. This game isn't made for random queue. If I had four people I trusted who played the same time as me we would likely be bouncing between G5 and P3.

AbodyHUN6662 votes

If you see a terrible team comp or a flamer in champ select you should dodge the game. It helped me advance. Also different people are at a skill level because of multiple reasons. In Silver 3 there are Bronze players who advance, there are ex-Gold players on a losing streak, there are lots of unranked players or those who were put there after the provisionals. All these guys have different understanding of the game, some are there because of having godlike reaction times, some have game understanding, there are people with vast champion pools willing to fill any role and some guys main their champ and know how to get first blood at level 3. In higher tiers people have more than one of these perks, so they can win more.

The only thing you have to do is simple. Get better. When you lose a game instead of raging that your TEAM is the cause of defeat, realize you are part of it and check back at your game to see what kind of mistakes YOU did.

Crying about how your team sucked won't get you nowhere. Try and see your mistakes in games so you can correct them and consequently get better at the game.

Oh and remember this, the only thing that is the same in EVERY GAME is : You.

Not idiots on your team, not afk's, You

That means having idiots on your team is irrelevant. If YOU get better. You'll get better.

Lastly getting better doesn't mean going up in ranks. It just means playing better.

Why would he do that when he can come to boards and complain about how his team is the reason he didn't get to gold this season?

FitzyFitzgerald3 votes

i honestly think their should be a"tryout" system for advancing tiers. Example: you want to "tryout" for gold. you do a try out series. they are not ranked games but you play with 4 people who are gold tier, as well as the enemy 5 man team all gold tier. it is a 5 game series. the outcome of the game doesn't even have to matter, what does matter is that after every game every gold player has to vote at whether you are at par or better than the gold skill level. that way the community decides whether your game knowledge is good enough and your execution of your skills are up to par. there is no fairer way. if you are garbage people will vote no, if you clearly show you are at their level why would they not vote yes. of course there will be trolls that troll vote, which is why you play 5 games, all with different summoners. all the votes tallied up at the end, and bam you either get in or you dont. if you get in you grind up to higher leagues then try out for the next tier. instead of having to win best 3 out of 5 in a row. if you dont get in you know you arent worthy and will try harder and try again when you think you are ready. i mean im just spitballing but i think its a better scenario then what we are dealing with

Narasimha3 votes

You really think too highly of people. There are just too many variables involved. People could vote no because they don't want people to rise, making it easier for themselves to keep climbing. They could be in a bad mood. Hell, they could just be bored and pick randomly. The factors for saying yes are just as open. People could 'bribe' others to vote. A person could be absolute horrible but charm others for the 'yes'. This would actually be a worse scenario. Atleast now you have SOME chance of climbing up via your own strength. This proposal puts power into the hands of everyone else.

FitzyFitzgerald2 votes

like i said its just an idea i rattled off the top of my head, but thats why you do 5 games with all different people. and what you just follow me from thread to thread and try to argue with me? thanks for the support....

You're forgetting that if a bronze decided to try out for gold, you'd have 4 more angry gold players complaining about their tier becoming elo hell. Also, whats to stop the much larger population of bronzes from all trying out for gold at the same time?

Not a bad idea, just pisses off more people than it helps in my opinion.

this would have so many trolls with narcissistic tendencies it wouldn't be remotely funny. Players would go into that just to vote down other players.

#3 - Win streaks required for promotion despite MMR Yeah... MMR is great and all. You can get LP at a quicker rate than you lose it all day, it doesn't matter when you have to not only win 3 or 4 games to get to 100 lp, you then have to continue that streak for two games. Then people often get trolls, dcs, and people who don't understand basics of the game like deep warding or when not to push or what over extending is. . . then boom. Also, when your MMR is so much higher than the league that you gain that much LP. Promos should be wavered.

I think changing the promos would be a good idea and maybe make it so you need like 200 or 250lp to go up a division so its based on how much you win rather then how often you go on streaks

MidEvilKnight3k3 votes

I feel like more people need to understand how the current system works. If you have managed to get your MMR above your current division, then you will earn more LP for a win than you will lose for a loss. You apparently have a higher MMR then your division so this is true for you. If you get into promotions, there is no greater chance than before to get trolls, dc, or toxic players. You have a 50% chance of getting promoted if you win about half your games. As far as I can tell, the system keeps track of your LP during promotions the same way as before. So even though you have to win against people in a higher MMR than the division you are in to get promoted, you will get more chances to get promoted because your LP gains are greater than your LP losses.

At the beginning of this season I spent a lot of time at silver 5 and I couldn't advance because my MMR was much lower than the division I was in. Eventually I improved my MMR to above my rank. It took a little time for my rank to begin to follow my MMR, but once it did, it started improving quickly until I was bouncing from Silver 2 to Silver 1. Even though I had to compete against people in Silver 1 and Gold to promote from Silver 3 to Silver 2, I was still able to do it because I was earning so much more LP for wins than I lost for losses and I could get into the promotion easily if I didn't get promoted the first time. MMR can sway easily depending on how well you are playing and if you got unlucky with trolls or dc recently. The divisions don't sway as easily and are honestly a better representation of how good you are on average than MMR is.

Second point Toxicity does not happen because of mismatched games. Toxicity happens more in this game as opposed to FPS, RTS, or a racing games, because LOL is a game that requires teamwork. FPS and RTS games have teams, but you do not need your teammate to cooperate in order for you to do well. In the case of most FPS games, you can usually forget you have a team and do pretty well. In LOL, when your teammate does not do what you expect (often times it's what you consider the obvious thing to do), it can have a large impact on your own performance. As a result people will be very toxic to other people for sucking when in reality they are about the same skill. Remember, sometimes you don't do things that are obvious to other people that can have a poor result for the team. Also, a lot of people will just not accept that their own performance was bad and will try to blame other. In FPS, Racing, and RTS games there isn't much excuse for having low kills, being slower, or not producing an army. Because LOL requires teamwork, many people think they can blame others for everything. May I suggest the jungler?

P.S. comments like the one about stopping champion updates to work on matchmaking are silly. Do you really think that the artists, gameplay mechanics team, and other members working on champion updates would be able to help develop a matchmaking system? Should they just stop all other projects until they get the most important one finished?

Spacesuit Spiff2 votes

You know, i agree with you. 40% of your games are going to be lost for no reason, and 40% are going to be won for no reason. It's actually even worse in higher ranks because "that one guy" will get milked for all he's worth and be impossible to carry. That said, I don't think there's any viable solution to this aside from playing 5s or playing a different game.

Pilot Dog2 votes

Do you have any suggestions to make it better?

I agree with some of your points but in my opinion everyone gets to the level they should be within like 200 games.

There aren't any players with 300+ games played that should be in Diamond but are still in Silver or Gold due to feeders.

In only like 5 or 6 % of games is there feeding that makes the game impossible to win. People just tend to remember bad games more than good ones.

And in the 5 out of 100 games that your team feeds 0-30 you'll get 5 out of 100 games where the other team feeds 0-30. So it balances out.

Biffolo1 votes

Now, this is something that bothers me, even though i agree with the principle behind the logic of the fact that you are as likely to have a feeder as face one. This logic works great in THEORY, but its not ENTIRELY impossible for someone to have bad luck. ONCE AGAIN, not saying i dont agree, but i feel it can be worded better. :P

The problem lies in that most players that are stuck in low elo that are good players, are only stuck because you take 10 steps forward to take 9 back. Endlessly. Which means yeah... you can get up, but WAY WAY to slow considering personal performance. That's not right.

To repeat another point... ALL I WANT... Even if it was in non-ranked. Is for when I play a game, for both teams to have 5 people who know the game against 5 others who know the game. I want even games. But maybe 1/20 games is like that. Most game one team or the other has some horrible player that degrades the game experience. When that's going on in ranked there is a problem. Ranked is for players who you know... should want to play competitively. Way to many players who play ranked don't give a shit, they don't learn, they don't research. It ruins what otherwise would be a perfect game.

When that "perfect and satisfying game" does happen, I am really and truly shocked. I see it maybe 1 in 30 in plat, it actually happens a lot more often in norms because not having any idea how to play your champion is the great equalizer across divisions, and people are less psychotic. Just got out of a 50 minute game where everyone performed reasonably well, and it's really sad that you can look at that incredibly rare occasion and say "wow, that's really what this game is supposed to be like", and then brace for another couple weeks of one of the teams ff20

Umm I just wanna say I almost didn't upvote this just because of the sheer amount of hateful language. It's a game, guys.

I just think they need to rework the MMR system and compare your KDA to those on your team and make that a larger part of the system than just win/lose. There are certain things that bronze and silver players do that lose them games, but are they really inferior to gold players in other ways? For example, I know a gold 3 whos more mechanically skilled than a plat 5 that I know, yet the gold 3 is gold 3 because he has a desire to play non-carry champions and a tendency to get caught out at the WORST possible moment. Even when he's carrying as Urgot with a 12/1 KDA, he'll lose cuz of that one death and take an MMR hit for the smallest mistake. He can get better, but a 12/1 KDA should never drop your MMR.

Promos could probably be reworked too. Instead of promo series, rework the MMR system so that placement is almost entirely based on MMR and your KDA from each game matters more, especially when compared to teammates because their feeding directly affects your success. For example, if lucian for some reason decides that dashing forward into blitz pulls is a good idea and does it 8 times giving Draven legendary, and you are mid and go 3/5 because he can kill you in 2 crits, then you don't suffer as much.

I agree you should have to carry your way out of "elo hell" though. It's how you prove you actually are better than everyone in "elo hell". I just don't agree that the current system measures carrying in the best way.

NoDomeAtHome1 votes

But tbh idc about rank. It holds no merit to me. Player of the same skill level in this game are 3 full leagues apart. Its a fact. What I want are balanced games with teams of similar ability. That doesn't happen. Almost every game I play is one team steam rolling the other. Idc if its mine, or theres... its the fact that its very rarely a close game that bothers me. I just want even games. Its boring to get run over, and its boring to run over people. And it seems like more games than not that's what happens.

AbodyHUN6661 votes

What you are upset about then is the impact of the early game. Most of the players tend to play poorly when they are behind, and they are facing an enemy with gold and level advantage. Everyone has troubles with this, even here in gold, but if the rest of the team can help that guy come back, the team will win. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krInt25GPhA&list=UUnTNv2iAP6StLtuznDD4R6w You should watch this guy's video series about carrying as a support. He talks a lot about major differences between the ranks like paying attention to team comps. Hope this helps.

Hellioning1 votes

On one hand, I do agree that there are several things wrong with the current ranked system. I don't like promos and hiding your MMR, the thing that actually matters, just smacks of dishonesty.

On the other hand, KDA doesn't matter as much as you think it does, and in the long run, you'll get to where you belong. People who say it's hard to carry as a support or jungler are playing support/jungle wrong.

Arch Mage Magnus1 votes

I agree with this. I don't necessarily carry my games, but I ALWAYS have a positive kill to death ratio, and in many cases it is doubled. This doesn't mean I can win the whole game for the team for the idiots that go 0-8 on my team.

For me, a lot of it is so natural and basic. You DON'T over extend. You DON'T get greedy. You DON'T just prance around in the enemies jungle without wards, and you sure as hell don't start fighting baron when their team is still up in the mid lane.

I know all of this. I make good calls on the team, but there is always those 1 - 2 players that will say " screw you, I do whatever I want". Aside from playing in 5 on 5 pre-mades, I have no idea how you can turn this around. The only other way, sadly, might be to make it pay to play, but only for ranked. If you want to play normals and ARAM, go right ahead. If you want to take this game seriously in the ranked division, pay for a subscription. This will hopefully attract the serious players, and will also help Riot with a cash revenue to target toxic behaviours.

Most people are against the above idea, but for me..... time is money. If I have to waste 5 hours to get to a promotion just to lose due to people that don't give a shit... hell...... I could of made $200 dollars in that time I just wasted. That's enough money for a 3 year subscription to League in just 5 hours. People need to realize the time is money concept, because free to play is nice..... but when you realize any 12 year old who just want's to be an asshat can join ranked and ruin it for everyone, the whole idea of free goes out the window.

I agree with this. I don't necessarily carry my games, but I ALWAYS have a positive kill to death ratio, and in many cases it is doubled. This doesn't mean I can win the whole game for the team for the idiots that go 0-8 on my team.

I know all of this. I make good calls on the team, but there is always those 1 - 2 players that will say " screw you, I do whatever I want". Aside from playing in 5 on 5 pre-mades, I have no idea how you can turn this around.

Here is a tip on how to turn these games into wins. If you are ahead of your lane opponent and you have that person on your team who is doing whatever they want and ramboing around use it to your advantage. You know what ill advised plays they are going to make. Follow them around and use them as bait. The enemy can't help seeing them being what looks like a free kill, but when you pop out and turn a free kill into a trade or an advantage you have increased your lead making the next bait even better and turned a liability (your teammate) into a positive.

In most cases it is better to follow your teammate(s) into what you know is a bad situation and just fight it out as full team commitment is stronger than a good spit play when neither team is truly coordinated.

the system is good 1- elo was modified just to fit this game 2- yeah you do but that is intended and common knowledge, you go to soloq to carry and prove you are a realy good player 3-win streaks arent required, if you dont win on consecutive manner vs ppl who are silver you wont get gold 4-thats community not matchmaking problem

With time you will realize, its the not the team with the best players that wins, but rather the team with the worst that loses. It sounds contradictory on the surface (surprisingly similar to 'sensitivity and specificity'). The problem is, most encounters rely not on you doing something well, but rather the opponent making a mistake. This is in stark contrast to any other sport/activity, and is a major source of frustration in LOL. And with the heavy focus on point'n'click insta-gib game-play is just making a bad situation far worse.
