Maokai in the new Jungle

Alright, so this is a Silver Jungle main's views on it, and all I've done is a custom game so far. Bear with me.

  1. Start golems. The stun is super useful, and by the time you get around to blue, you should be able to smite again near the end of the fight. (I think, I haven't fully tested this).
  2. Holy crap the new jungle is hard. Hence starting golems. You really need that little extra boost, and you should hit level 2 on the golem camp (Since all camps give the same exp now). Make sure you're kiting attack animations, because since you only start with two pots now, you really need to get that sustain.
  3. Mana regeneration. I had a few problems with mana regen on Mao. Without Blue (and with the longer respawns and shorter duration, it was more than I would like), Mao runs into a ton of mana problems. I suggest a mana regen item.
  4. Bonus: you can get your people in lane faster, since golems is closer to lane.
  5. I REALLY thought I was going to be picking up one of the champ smite items, but you with the difficulty of the new jungle, the jungle farm item is amazing. ESPECIALLY that 15% return. Another bonus on this is in teamfights at jungle objectives, you can replenish yourself a bit by smiting the objective (even if you don't get the kill on it). It adds an interesting level of gameplay.
  6. Hot damn Baron is hard.
  7. Nope, no seven. Because I said so.
  8. Ability spam. While this is going to wreak havoc on your mana, the health sustain is huge in this tougher jungle.
  9. Early ganks. If you can get your jungle clear quickly (And by that I mean golems+blue) and hit a lane early, you may very well have a level advantage.
  10. Trinkets. I was a fan of grabbing the sweeper before, but without jungle item wards, it may be better to go with the trinket wards. Or, you know, buying real wards.
  11. No eleven either. Rhymes with 7. Nope.
  12. Seriously, watch your health and mana.

What I learned: Sustain/mitigation junglers (Maokai Rammus Skarner ) have a safer jungle, but are (obviously) going to be slightly weaker gankers. Fighters/assassins (LeeSin Nocturne ) are going to have a harder jungle but have stronger ganks (due to damage output).

I hope this helps someone out. And isn't too noobtastic.
