Wait, new poppy is using a 2-handed mace?

Why does she have a shield then?

It's a buckler. They are small and may strap to your arm instead of strictly being held.

That isn't a buckler.

Bucklers pretty specifically are just a shield-boss that you hold in your hand.

This is a mistake in terminology that D&D has consistently made and Riot is apparently following suit. Poppy's just got a shield.

Seeing as how nearly every fantasy setting is based off of D&D, I don't see it as a problem. If the terminology is consistent then nobody is confused.

Because it means writers haven't done their homework.

All it takes is a simple image search to see that bucklers aren't designed to be strapped to the arm at all.

Basically, someone got lazy and confused a buckler with a small shield, and then started abusing the term buckler until it was common.

This matters because... why? Why get into a semantic debate about what is and isn't a buckler... your ePenis might shrivel if you're thought incorrect about something that just doesn't matter?

Fuck you too.

Maybe you should bring this up in the Q&A, if nobody has. It's not like they can't change it.

Hold on one second. We allow jax to destroy stone turrets with a fishing pole but blacksmith poppy can't custom fit a buckler with an arm strap.

Because then it would be a strap-on shield-boss, not a buckler.

Okay, lesson time.

A shield-boss is the metal dome thing in the middle of a shield. Some shields have them. Other shields don't. Most shields were designed to strap onto the forearm while having a handle either further down or inside of the shield-boss to hang onto. As armor improved, larger shields became less necessary and someone got the bright idea of using just a shield boss with a handle inside it in their off hand to go along with a side-sword. It made for a nice, agile combination of weapons with the buckler basically getting used like a metal boxing glove. The buckler/side sword combination is in fact where the term 'swash-buckling' originally arose from.

Shields with no handles (purely strap on) were almost never used since they had a nasty habit of flopping around uselessly in battle.

A shield and small buckler (which poppy has) are not identical. A buckler is worn ON the arm such that it is still possible to wield a 2 hand weapon. It can also be gripped in the fist.

Thats a hammer. It is definitely a hammer. Her Q is named Hammer Shock.

Also, who says she has to hold it with two hands? And who says the shield/buckler isn't magical, which it obviously is.

Mace and hammer is the same thing in most rpgs. and its a little long for 1 hand don't you think?

Meep Man1 votes

Well, this is the yordle race we are talking about. Their proportions for weapons to size is ginormous. She actually only uses two hands to use the hammer when she overhands with it in-game AKA her Q and I think one of her AA animations. So she uses it with one hand. I mean, Trist's cannon is ginormous. That would blow someone off their feet normally, but she is hardly fazed.
