So what if Koggy did ONLY magic damage?

Yeah, Koggles puts out a lot of magic damage right now, but what if that were the only type of damage he dished out? Ryze had an Innate like that, back in the day. But I think something akin to it could be added to Koggy to help provide him with a more robust niche. There's a reason why the only champ in the ADC position with a lower pick-rate than Kog is Quinn. The things he does well (Tank Buster, Poke/Cleanup, Long range auto-attacker) can all be provided by other champions who have stronger early games, are safer, or both.

So why not give him something that NO other ADC offers?

(Innate) Eldritch Acid: Kog'Maw converts all Physical damage he deals into Magic damage. Additionally, his basic attacks can not critically strike. Instead, they shred flat magic resist equal to (percentage) of his critical strike chance, stacking up to three times.

Due to the new Innate, remaking the side-effect on his Q would probably be in order. Maybe make it apply an extra stack of his Innate? Not really sure there.

Either way, Koggy would be putting out pure Magic damage. It would allow him to be picked onto teams that already have a ton of physical damage and are in need of some major magical threat. It would also push him more out of the tank-busting role (he already can't compete with Vayne on that front) and more into the squish-buster role (which he was before his Q got remade, the flat resist shred was nasty). Destroying people's magic resist would also make him a valuable asset to other magic damage dealers since he would be amping their damage significantly as well.

tl;dr: Koggy needs a unique niche to help set him apart from Vayne and Jinx (and to a lesser extent, Ez and Trist). Transitioning him to a pure magic damage threat could help accomplish that goal.

and make him weaker as a result.

Weaker?

Are you sure?

Maybe if he shreds .1 MR per %crit chance. That would be pretty weak.

But what about 1? Or five? Or fifteen million?

You can't declare something weaker without having any idea what the numbers involved are. That's a problem on this board, really. People get stuck on numerical balance. There's more to the game than that.

This change would bring up some problems Udyr used to have. Tiger stance used to deal magic damage which made building for and against him a bit of a problem. When building defense, the intuitive response to someone building AD would be to get armor. Players who didn't know what Udyr did would be spending gold on a stat that wouldn't benefit them. Since tiger stance dealt magic damage, Udyrs couldn't completely benefit from penetration items between his skills and basic attacks.

Honestly?

I would argue that it would make itemizing against Koggy MORE consistent.

Right now, what do you build against him?

HP? Nah, he has his W.

Resist? Nope. He has a %resist shred on his Q.

Making his resist shred flat would make building MR against him actually workable, since heaps of resist is the counter to flat resist shred. The counter to %shred is HP, but since Koggy deals %hp damage too...

See what I mean?

I see what you mean but that has nothing to do with my post. Kogmaw building AD and dealing magical damage presents a burden of knowledge where players who don't know what the fuck he does (e.g. new players, players who don't bother reading or doing research, etc.) will make the wrong decision when building against him.

When someone builds huge amounts of AD/crit (as typical of AD marksmen/carries), the intuitive response when building defensively would be to build something with armor to combat the onslaught of physical damage through basic attacks. A player may end up building armor despite it not helping at all since kogmaw would be pumping out purely magic damage instead.

Ah, okay, I see where you're coming from then.

But for the sake of argument, there are quite a few champions that get magic damage for building AD. It honestly isn't that uncommon. Koggy already gets bonus magic damage on his Ult based on building AD. If anything, it would just make the rest of his kit consistent with his Ult. 'Oh look, it's Kog. Always build MR against that guy'.

Examples abound of champions who get other damage types for building a stat that normally provides something else. Koggy would be a bit weird, but I suspect the purple damage numbers and the total lack of red damage numbers would be sufficient to let new players figure out what's going on.
