Do mid laners need CC

Searno··1 votes·715 views

I was wondering about the general consensus of what people think a mid laner should have, obviously the main role or a mid laner should be to deal damage but do you think it's necessary for them to have some sort of cc ability? My current mid laners that I don't really every stray away from much tend to be zyra and akali, Zyra is a boatload of cc, meanwhile akali has almost 0 except for a mediocre aoe slow that doesn't do much else cuz now she doesn't get much stats from it and i feel like she dies in a teamfight even when in shroud just from aoe damage, so literally i only use w for crappy slows/trying to run...

I'm trying to decide on picking a new third which may be ap corki cuz i used to play it and it worked really well (granted I was silver up till this season when I got gold) but I was wondering if CC is something that's absolutely necessary/viewed as part of what makes a good mid.

It's not "mid laners" that need CC. It's "mages" that need CC. You don't only need to bring mages to mid lane.

what is considered a mage then? just everything but assasins?

Mages are champions whose damage primarily comes from casting spells and that require more than one round of spells (when not fed) to kill someone by themselves. They also have at least one specialization to further classify them by, ie zone control, utility, damage over time, poke, etc.

It's fairly common for mid laners to receive at least hard form of CC and multitudes of soft cc these days. But It's not necessarily a must, a champion that has minimal cc can have more space for great utilities and damage to compensate. CC for Mid laners is probably just the best option for them in the current meta.

That's my one beef with akali but she's managed to fit my assasin role pretty well as I generally don't like them but akali has sustain so unless she gets full bursted she outlives for a bit in teamfights, that's the only reason why I like her even with minimal cc. Any recommendations for a mid that can act like zyra, or one who has a safe laning phase with some form of cc?

Lux Morgana Orianna Syndra Velkoz feel pretty similar to Zyra for me. I like playing her a lot in the mid lane, and those champions are all immobile, mid to long ranged, can play safely and have some poke and buttloads of AoE damage. Especially Lux feels really similar in terms of gameplay patterns. Hit your snare ---> chunk them down. Lux is slightly longer ranged, slightly more reliable and has a shield, but deals less overall damage in teamfights and longer trades (she has pretty high cooldowns). Orianna is one of my personal favorites. She has a unique kit, shes always at least viable and completely solid overall. She also has ridiculous amounts of utility in her kit.

can confirm these selections

I am Zyra mid main and those minus morgana are my alternates.

Ahri Brand Cassiopeia also seemed to be easy for me to pick up.

If you're looking for a safe laning phase Lux is definitely the choice. Snaire, slow, shield, hella range. If you don't overextend you shouldn't really die

I sometimes play Kat & Nidalee mid and still got good positive outcomes so I'll vote no for necessary. But CCs are always nice to have =]

I think it depends more on the champion and less on the role. Something like Vel'koz needs heavy slows, and knockbacks to make up for his long range non mobility kit. Something like Zed only needs a slight slow so he can deal more damage without being kited to death. CC feels pretty balanced at the moment.

No, of course not. The enemy will just stand still for you until they die

you can pick whatever the fuck you want in midlane. if youre facing an assassin, dont be shy to pick a bruiser or tank, as long as he fits the teamcomp well.

ive ran garen on midlane against melee assassins in the past, which worked quite well. even if i get outroamed and my opponent manages to pick up a kill on bot or top lane, hes gonna make himself the villain and im in a good position to shut him down when he comes back into lane.

either way, your first concern should be the matchup youre facing when you go into lane, not what is supposed to get played where.

and dont be too shy to swap lanes with your top laner, when the matchup is better for at least one of you.
