I avoid playing top simply because Riven exists

Reynard the ƒox··12 votes·860 views

Just the possibility of playing against a competent Riven who knows animation cancelling is enough to make me avoid playing top lane entirely.

Regardless of whether or not she's overpowered or has an unhealthy kit, facing Riven takes the fun right out of the game.

EDIT: I didn't make this thread because I lost to a Riven and need tips on how to beat one. I made this thread because I went even with one and making sure I didn't feed her was the least fun, most stressful thing I've done in this game in a long time, and I wanted to express my distaste for the experience.

just pick anyone that's not trash before level 6.

Cloth 5 bam you just countered Riven's early aggression.

LOL not even

pretty much. ^ Riven is a snowball oriented champion. Don't give anything to her, as hard as it may be; that's your objective when laning against her.

Reynard the ƒox2 votes

Exactly. It's not like this with any other top laner, aside from Darius I suppose. But even then Darius won't transition into a teamfighting monster who is also a 1v1 monster who is also uncatchable who can also chase anyone down.

You're on the razor's edge when you play against Riven, and it's not fun for anyone except the Riven player.

a lot of top lane champs are like this actually. I actually enjoy playing vs riven since i just enjoy the match ups, but that's just me.

Good Xin will destroy Riven - there is a youtube match BoxBox vs Xin. The Xin build full ad + crit and was wrecking Riven even lategame - the trick is to use your ult right on time not to get knocked and E into her after her = dead battle bunny. She can't outdps Xin, but he dies easily because of no mobility later, so is risky to go ham with him.

Did you just say riven is a team fighting monster please that cracked me up without flash you are useless also if you get cc say goodbye to that health bar and that's why I suggested cloth 5 it negates some of Riven's damage so you can survive the laning phase which transitions into her falling off when she doesn't have a lead.

kJs1 votes

Believe it or not she can follow up with some very devastating and disruptive AoE CC and get away with E all the while dodging and dashing CC skillshots. Exacerbated when she has her ultimate on.

Reynard the ƒox2 votes

You really have no idea what this thread is about lol

Dunno. I feel like it's not hard to get away from Riven, as funny as it sounds with her 8 billion dashes. Dodging the third Q is pretty substantial. But if someone told me they got chased down by her I would believe it. Riven is okay in teamfights, I won't say she's bad because her ult does increase her range and give her an AD steroid while her W/Q are really disruptive and can absolutely destroy a poorly positioned backline, but she's definitely not the best at it. I enjoy playing against Riven but it's a love-hate relationship. I'd still lane against her over some of my other least favourite champions though. That's not to say the dislike for her goes unwarranted by some people - depending on the champion you play she's very hard to escape from / kill / survive. Her kit always gives her a chance, which is awesome in all honesty. But since not all champions get that chance, it's actually seen as unbalanced. Sure a lot of people believe she might need some toning down, but I really like Riven [albeit playing many other champions more] and would hate to see anything too bad happen. She's sitting in a pretty fine spot as is for me.

This is irrelevant to my original point.

Win or lose, playing against Riven is a chore. It's work. It's stressful knowing that if you make one mistake Riven has the tools in her kit to take a tiny tiny mistake and blow it up into a massive lead. She forces you to play on HER terms no matter what. For me personally, Riven is the perfect definition of an anti-fun champion.

Sakura Mirage2 votes

So you say my post is irrelevant when it's the easiest way to not give up first blood in 5mins that's your problem you want to build full glass canon and don't want any consequences to happen.

Reynard the ƒox3 votes

You're post is irrelevant because I don't need tips on how to beat Riven.

Win or lose, it's not fun having one in the game, and that's my point.

Fadedpf1 votes

You stop Riven's aggression by completely giving her control of the lane, if you cant fight her its let her freeze and shove you under turret or die. A measly 15 armor is nothing to riven when she will shield your trade damage and lay out 2 hard CC's and once she CC's you, you basically lost top lane and aren't able to do anything about it by yourself.

"I didn't feed Riven, but I also didn't farm at all!"

"Good job, you played the matchup right!"

Something is wrong when this is how it works. The Riven probably has several kills' worth of gold from farm anyway.

when i play the match up and can actually choose who to play when i see riven, i actually end up just beating her in lane with something like tryn. you can also use j4 or a lot of other champs, but you can actually kill riven if she tries to fight you, or you can actually try to fight her and win with some match ups. it really depends on what you play. if you play something like vlad or nasus, it's not the most fun lane.

Reynard the ƒox3 votes

It's usually when I'm trying to be nice and fill, so I'm high pick and need to blind pick a top laner, and then I remember that the enemy might pick Riven.

If I already see the Riven I usually just play a different lane hehe. But if I still must play top after seeing the Riven I play Gnar. At least then I can put up a fight since he also has a jam-packed kit, and even if I lose I can still be a nice beefy tank.

Allowing yourself to be afraid of a specific champion isn't good man. Your not going against BoxBox every time so its pointless to stress yourself over nothing. Champions exist that you wont like but will have to deal with, why even let it get so upset that you feel you have to even make this thread?

The possibility is scarier than the reality.

You obviously weren't good enough to play top lane in the first place....

hh the thinker2 votes

one thing that even boxbox has a hard time with is voli starting cloth. even if you die, as long you keep farming and building armor and health, you will outscale riven. (riven has a few counters, but this one is fairly easy to play right).

Pantheon cloth 5

Not even cloth 5, Crystalline Flask + 2 health pots + 1 mana pot. Now throw spears at her all day until she has to back or tries to engage and block, stun, block.

kJs2 votes

Volibear and Singed against Riven is fun to watch. Riven has no sustain until a Hydra and if she tries to harass under tower Volibear and Singed can just flip them back.

Playing norms. Me playing Wukong vs an animation cancelling Riven. Oh god.

Slamurai Jack2 votes

I'm far more afraid of a good Teemo than I am of a good Riven. A good Teemo is basically unbeatable for nearly every top laner if he runs the proper setup.

I can fight Riven, I can't fight Chogath

Idk why people constantly complain about Riven, I've found ways to beat her and plenty of matchups she does terribly in. You can put Riven behind and she'll be useless but Cho'gath? He can go 0-20 but still 100-0 your ADC with a broken point-and-click true damage single target nuke, and has ridiculous amounts of long ranged, AoE, CC, on top of being extremely tanky.

But yeah, your reason for not playing top is basically the same reason I don't play top. Riven very clearly needs nerfs but I think there are others who do too. They just make the game unfun. If you let Riven get a kill, she's just unstoppable and you immediately lose lane and most likely will lose the game if the Riven knows what to do with that one single advantage. It's pretty sad how the only nerfs were nerfing her movement speed, meanwhile she still has 4 low cooldown dashes with CC on them.

Pantheon vs. Riven I love this match up. I haven't had one that hasn't been a win for Pantheon yet. I'm sure that day will come, but for now, I will enjoy the Mantheons Six pack abs and Toned Biceps.

It's the kit. Like Lee sin. It's Riven's kit that sucks. Since they're changing kits lately we can hope they change Riven too
