The problem is: off-meta WORKS, usually because it involves a ranged character going top lane OR a mage going bot lane. So I'm legit scared to pick top in every game because there will almost 100% be a ranged enemy.
Let's just say it's a prevention program. To start low elo players believeing in shit high elo players say.
I think this is largely biased. If a player is very familiar with any champion they can make it work in almost any lane. I've seen very skilled players take Janna mid and destroy a lot of the common picks. Does this mean everyone should just take Janna mid in ranked and expect to win, obviously not but you would never know if you simply dodge every single time you see something that is different than the meta. Soraka top can be extremely effective with an experienced Soraka player who knows the common picks top and how to work around them. Just simply deciding that you will lose every time you see someone pick this top means you are throwing away your own lp because of your own bias.
If you feel uncomfortable with someone's selection in ranked then calmly express your concern and ask if they can play anything else. If they are confident that they can succeed then support them and try your best to make it work. If you lose it might not even be because of the top pick but because of several different factors in that game, but if you win by supporting your teammates and doing your best to work together as a team, it will be more rewarding and create a less stressful ranked experience.
I have played soraka top but that was when she could heal minions and it was only against nasus, my friend was jungle then and he got fed off of top cause I was just a top support. I did get stuck with zil top cause of a champ error and the kid didn't want zil mid so I traded him swain for zil. It was against a fiora and she raged cause "all you do is throw bombs wtf uninstall" ya lol
