Kog remake goal: Improve Kog's pick rate by giving him a well defined niche

Kog remake result: Kog can only express his niche while his W is active, when it's down he's nothing.
-Kog's poke used to be his fallback when W was down, but now it tickles unless he has a nearly dead target to snipe in addition to having crippling mana costs.
-His mid game Sheen-weaving was effectively neutered, forcing him to all-in with W as his only workable play pattern.
-His base and scaling HP both took a hit, making him even more squishy than he was previously.
-While Kog's early and mid game presence both got kicked in the teeth, the game's underlying mechanics were altered to heavily favor early-game dominate champions.
-Kog's pick-rate and win rate tanked for the above reasons.

It's been two months now, Riot.

'But he might be okay in LCS with twelve Lulus backing him up against a team with no gap closers!' is not a valid reason to leave Kog underwhelming for the vast majority of the people who play him.

Start with the niche you want him to fill. He's supposed to be League's immobile machine-gun tripod?

Fine.

Then let him always be able to do that, just like Graves is always a tanky shotgun guy and Jhin is always a nimble slow-firing sniper guy. Move the double attack speed to his Passive and axe the self destruct. Turn his W into a toggle that roots him. Turn his W into a toggle that consumes mana. Make the cooldown on his W scale down to two seconds of downtime at most. Make it readily available somehow because Kog's whole identity is tied up in that skill. When Kog's whole thing is sustained damage it makes no sense if he can't sustain it.

I trust you guys, Riot. I know you can do Kog right. But the balance team needs to get over this 'But LCS!' hump. The most popular ADC picks in LCS hard counter Kog. The way Summoner's Rift has been set up for this season hard counters Kog. He's not going to be out of control, you guys. It's okay. You can fix him.

kog maw was made into a moving turret of late game doom, but they should have went for a sgt hammer style of gameplay, he roots himself to get super long range

Which would be a really cool way to change his W. It would just need a reasonable cooldown upon turning it off to prevent Kog from using it to kite.

Oh, I thought he fit the Gatling gun theme pretty well.

He does fit the Gatling gun theme!

For six seconds.

Then he's stuck with his shitty side-arm from seven seconds while Jinx continues to fart out AoE-crit rockets everywhere.

yeah but jinx is a grill who 40% of the guys who play league think is "their type of girl". Tbh, I'm all for void slime n' stuff, super hot. But yeah, he really only has a small time frame to destroy people, and that's if they aren't unbelievably bursty or cc incarnate.

Having a small time frame to destroy people is a big part of Kog's problem. Other ADCs do that as well. Twitch, Vayne, MF, Trist, they all have that big burst of strength followed by significantly reduced power once they blow their big cooldown. BUT! They can still do their main thing once that power spike is past. Twitch can still stealth if he gets takedowns. Vayne still has tumble/silver bolts for tactical mobility and anti-tankin'. MF has her attack speed boost and low cooldown Q. Trist still has her range and her superior pushing power.

Kog has... his Ult. Which will eat his mana pool in a hurry. Which can be dodged easily. Which only deals appreciable damage to badly injured targets.

In what situations would you want to pick Kog in solo ranked where Twitch, Vayne, MF, or Trist wouldn't be a better choice? The only reason I can think of is 'because I want to play Kog', which isn't a compelling reason in a competitive setting.

This could be fixed by giving Kog way more damage over six seconds than any of those other champions sport, but I doubt that would turn out well for game health. The other option is to make it so Kog has no down time like the others do. That means you pick Kog when you want really high sustained damage over long fights as opposed to a big burst of damage. It would give him a reason to be picked. A very specific reason, sure. But Kog has always been a niche champion and there's nothing wrong with that.
