Where does Varus mid sit in a low ELO setting in Season 6?

Hi, I just got Varus recently and was going to try him out. I'm not much one for bot lane, so I was primarily going to use him mid lane. I was hoping to find some info on how viable he might be in low-ish ELO in mid lane, what with champions like Yasuo, Fizz, and Diana being pretty good this season. I was going to build full dmg/armour pen after Manamune ( ) and was wondering if this will provide enough dmg to really rely on his Q poke. I was also going to take either Deathfire Touch or Thunderlords Decree, but I'm not sure which would work better (since TD needs three hits to proc). Also, how does Varus sit with mana potions being removed? Is laning difficult because you are always oom? Thanks to anyway who knows a lot about Varus mid and responds ^.^

If you are worried about mana, it may be a good idea to start with a Sapphire Crystal and 3 Health Potions so that you can purchase your Tear of the Goddess early (though Corrupting Potion is pretty nice too). However, considering how powerful Essence Reaver is at the moment, I'm not sure if I would pass it up.

I'd say that Varus has suffered a bit due to the changes made to Last Whisper, but he still works well with Lord Dominik's Regards; it's just not a core item to build early every game anymore.

I've been considering experimenting with a build like the following: item 3006 item 3508 item 3094 item 3072 item 3142 item 3036

It seems like it would work rather well as a combination of poke (AD, mana regen, bonus autoattack range), sustained damage (attack speed, critical strike chance), and survivability (lifesteal, shield, movement speed). My only really concern with the build is how squishy I would be and mana sustain (whether or not I'd be able to safely autoattack enough).

I always assumed Varus mid was an AD caster, and didn't go well at all with auto attack stats (attack speed, crit chance, life steal). Plus, the new last whispers aren't even worth I don't think, because just getting flat armour pen is more efficient.

He used to be, but I'm inclined to build critical strike chance on him now due to how strong Essence Reaver currently is. If you have 20% crit from any other source, you get 30% CDR from that item alone.

You could try a more traditional build, but I'm probably going to give the one I listed a try. I think it would provide a significant amount of poke around objectives while still dealing high sustained damage.

Also, don't underestimate Lord Dominik's Regards. Considering how strong tanks are at the moment, you'll probably need Last Whisper at some point just to kill them and LDR provides 15% damage amplification if the target has 500 health more than you (which is easily achievable even by squishy champions).
