Can @Riot give us a straight answer on why they can't make the Butcher's Bridge a permanent map?

I just don't understand, the map had absolutely no bugs when it got released nor any problems that could break the game, so why? It's not as if league had too much maps...

i think that they should make it so if there are a certain number of bildgewater champions in the same aram game you go to butchers bridge instead of howling abyss

I read a post where one team had Ashe, while the other had Sejuani. Both teams let the two duke it out in a 1v1 for the quest.

Maybe something similar for Gangplank and Miss Fortune.

Ithil Snek6 votes

The quest concerns Lissandra too. Having the same with GP and MF would be awesome indeed. Since the reward of the Howling Abyss quest is the Freljors Queen crown, what would be the Butcher's Bridge's one?

A ship?

Entire Bilgwater

just imagine the entirety of bilgewater floating on top of GP's head.

the same ice crown, gp's gotta be beautiful too.

The key to bilgewater.

A captain's hat.

PaladinNO1 votes

Well, to be fair, the Freljord quest isn't always working properly. I've had matches with Ashe vs Lissandra, where Ashe won...and both of them got crowns.

I've also played Sejuani, and got told to kill Ashe...who was on MY team.

While I wouldn't mind more such cosmetic passive quests; no bugs, please.

Or something like a 10 second voting period for every player to cast a vote for the ARAM map, something like how Guild Wars 2 selects its pvp maps. So that it leaves room for more ARAM maps to be created, if Riot ever cares to.

Glory ln Death1 votes

It either needs to be randomly chosen or based on a voting system.

Unless they come out with maps for other regions, having it hinge on getting a certain number of Bilge water champs (which we don't have a ton of) would mean it almost never gets played.

AngelFrost005 votes

Because it just the same as aram but different.

Ithil Snek23 votes

Because Aram is always the same and many players want something different :/

Would also help with some of the winter skins like Snowday Ziggs' particle effects being harder to see.

Just the same but different?

Wut.

I can get behind this

I think it would be really cool if the map skins for ARAM were also random. It would be in the spirit of the game mode, and would add even more variety by switching up announcers and maps from time to time. I'm not sure how technically difficult that would be, but at least Riot would have all the assets already. On top of that, Riot could even throw in the old Proving Grounds as an ultra-rare random map skin.

Leetri3 votes

Probably just a priority thing. They're putting most of their efforts towards getting the new client fully functioning and stable, so new features come later. All the assets are there, it's most likely just a matter of hooking the client up so it will randomly select one of the map skins.

SH Azykan2 votes

they could even make it a dedicated 1v1 map for the featured game mode rotation (come on everyone wants this)

Hammerpriest1 votes

The 1v1 game modes have always had the least people playing them out of any game mode Riot has released. I remember the massive flop that was the Snowdown Showdown that was supposed to get everyone hyped for the second Magma Chamber concept. It ended up so dead that they just scrapped Magma Chamber again.

Riot themselves mentioned it after the fact when cancelling Magma Chamber. See: http://na.leagueoflegends.com/en/news/game-updates/features/showdown-magma-chamber-info

As well as this more detailed analysis just on Showdown in this thread specifically the following quote. Sadly the graphs have 404'd but the context can be gleamed from the thread and red posts. http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=4186837

Brackhar > Well, you can see from the data that the play rate dropped off substantially after just two weeks for Showdown, and it didn't show signs of stopping. A few more weeks and we'd likely be looking at 20 minute queue times commonly, which is unacceptable for a 5 minute average game mode.

EROTIC RAID BOSS1 votes

I think it would be pretty popular as a rotating game mode

Kieferr2 votes

LIMITED time only, what's so hard to understand? They can't just make everything permanent, it's not as easy as you may think. And that's what makes special events special.

Ithil Snek9 votes

Well, the Poro King gamemode was suposed to be the Christmas game mode, no we have it almost every weeks. I don't really see why what's applies to a game mode cannot apply to another one.

EROTIC RAID BOSS9 votes

wtf is this logic? making a new map that was only around for 2 weeks is a massive waste of money. implying upkeep is why they didn't keep it is just stupid

ModCaptainMårvelous2 votes

About a year or so ago I got a survey asking if I'd be ok buying an "ARAM Map-skin booster" which makes us play on BB...for about $1.

Yeah. You can imagine my response.

Rozzeta2 votes

It's a much improved version of the Aram map, specially in the music department. I cannot comprehend why was it ditched in favour of reinstating Howling Abyss as default, which let's remember is as much an event map as Butcher's Bridge (released along with lore change to Freljord champs).

Neamean2 votes

They should make BB default for aram and HB be THE poro king map we will see both that way. Rather than no BB at all.

Xicashina2 votes

I thought they already answered this when it came out, the answers I remember were:

  • They were worried about splitting the queues
  • The extra server strain that hosting two map options wasn't worth it

Also from my understanding, the Original Butcher's Bridge map was not a direct port of ARAM and various parts were coded differently (beyond visuals) which would mean they would have to monitor it for glitches separately for ARAM.

I don't see any issue with them adapting the theme into a skin personally but Eh its RIOT

If you were curious about this I believe it was from the original Butcher's Bridge Q&A forum post

EROTIC RAID BOSS2 votes

so get rid of howling abyss lol

PaladinNO1 votes

Well, they did it with the Crystal Scar and Dominion, so I wouldn't be surprised...

Then 3v3 (who even plays 3v3 anymore? It's barely even recognized by the official API!). EUNE (and preferably every server, according to official statements) wants Normal Draft Pick to be gone, so that's soon Summoner's Rift out as well, I guess.

Do I really need to add a #kappa to this, or should I just let my sarcasm sink in a bit first?

TheHappyReaperz1 votes

"The map had absolutely no bugs" I'm sure. The limited time map they made had no bugs, sure. I'm going to say it one more time. The map they made, specifically, for a short time, in no way had bugs. Alrighty then.

Ithil Snek4 votes

What I meant is that this isn't something Riot must constantly update or adjust like Urf or any other gamemode, it is a retexture of the Aram map and therefore it shouldn't have any game breaking bugs since the code of the map isn't changed, which means adding it back isn't a hard thing to do.

I guess.

Bladeglory2 votes

You underestimate the upkeep cost of this pot of spaghetti, my friend.

Ithil Snek1 votes

Riot's Spaghetti code is still a thing? Heh, I tought they got rid of it about one or two seasons ago :/

50000000000000001 votes

They were in the process of rewriting/revising code. Pretty recently (like a few patches ago) they completely rewrote the code for Master Yi's Alpha Strike, so I'm guessing they're still unspaghetting the codes.

PaladinNO1 votes

"99 problems with my code on the wall, 99 problems with my code, take one down, patch it around, 297 problems with my code on the wall."

Current client bugs: Ignoring that the new client is still in Beta and thus the current reconnect problem is irrelevant (the new client also wasn't available 1-2 seasons ago)... -I still randomly get thrown to the Custom Game lobby when clicking "Play again" after a game in the legacy client.

-Also with the legacy client: Summoner Profile button randomly stops working for no reason.

Ingame bugs: -I had apparently "0/1326 HP" as Sona just after respawning (27.11-2016).

-Turret target laser still targeting something way across the map (18.10-2016).

So yeah, the spaghetti code issue is still most definitely with us.

General bugs: LoL is the only game I have encountered which occasionally breaks an internet connection. It really is THAT poorly coded. Only other program I have ever encountered that does that: NetLimiter, when it is started. But at least that one is logical because it injects itself into the network connection. Haven't used it for years, so I dunno how that one is now.

LoL runs on the obsolete UDP protocol. There is a bug for you.

ahferroin71 votes

UDP is no more obsolete than TCP, and in fact quite a lot of critical network infrastructure runs on UDP (including almost every routing protocol that isn't at layer 2 (which your network connection depends on), all network time synchronization protocols (which you're almost certainly using), many logging protocols, DHCP (which you almost certainly use daily), DNS (which you do use daily), many VPN protocols, a number of VoIP protocols, and a majority of infrastructure management protocols (which you indirectly depend on because of your ISP depending on them)).

AMYS GRAVE1 votes

I kinda wish butchers bridge would be turned into a 1v1 permanant game mode map. If fewer people queue up for the mode it doesn't really matter because the 1v1 format is a much simpler matchmaking algorithm, and queue times wouldn't be adversely affected. The mode would quickly develop OP meta picks but if it inherits the balancing of aram then it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Itsbeghdev2 votes

nah, champs with better 1v1 would, well, be better, period. Seems like it would be cool to have just for people who feel like playing their favorite skirmisher or assassin against someone else's though.

AMYS GRAVE2 votes

well yeah, of course, but the kind of people who want to 1v1 someone aren't going to be doing so with supports. The mode would have its own imbalance issues like aram does but i don't think that ruins it as a game mode.

Itsbeghdev2 votes

Have you ever actually tried to 1v1 someone with a support though? It's really fun if you're doing it against a friend.

Champion Skin1 votes

Wait what? Why would you ever make it a permanent map? Wouldn't it be better to have the option to randomly get howling abyss or Butchers Bridge (or chose one of them to only get that one)

Or for Riot to sell it as a map skin? as it basically is the same as howling abyss just with different looks just like a champion skin

Ithil Snek2 votes

Tbh I don't care how Riot could implement it, as long as they can make it back whatever the way they do it I would be ok with it
