Mages vs Supports: how to make them different.

Supports should have high base damage and trash tier scaling, encouraging exp over gold and making them good for the role, but weaker than a real mage.

Mages should have low base damage and high scaling, rewarding farming and kills as well as setting a higher damage ceiling for them.

I know champion diversity and versatility are cool; however these two roles cannot be interchangeable if the game is to be balanced.

Which category do we want lux, brand, karma, lulu, and all the other flex pick supports I can’t think of?

I dont think you can differentiate the roles, as long something is viable as supp, its viable as supp. And a lot of mages are long range poke champs, perfect for support, u dont need many items to stay safe and poke/cc.
