Why is MId Laner the most popular role?

I've noticed that queue times for mid laners are the longest. Why is that? Also, do they feel that much longer? I am mainly asking this question because my friends say this is my best role, but I would rather main Jungle if the queue times will be too long.

There are a few reasons.

  1. It's the 2nd best role to carry from (jg being the best).

  2. It has the greatest variety of champions, from Ziggs to Zed to Vladimir and Yasuo.

  3. It has the most interesting champions as well. Aside from new releases like Jhin and Gangplank (who can coincidentally also mid), midlaners have had very exciting designs. Zed is exciting. ASol is exciting. Azir made mage mains wet themselves on release.

  4. It's probably the most forgiving role. Long range + short lane + Morellonomicon exists = safe.

  5. High damage role.

Thank you for the response!

to harp on (3) it has the most number of common champions designed specifically to shit on other players.

which is "interesting and exciting design".

It's League of Legends. If your champion doesn't shit on other players you're playing Soraka.

And if you're talking about just zoning and making people hate themselves, no, that's champions that go top. Quinn, Pantheon, Darius, etc.

its the one and only spot you can put an AP caster and get them a gold lead safely.

you can put a veigar top, until hes 0-11 and you instantly regret that decision because he just gets tower dove repeatedly.

its not that mid lane is over popular, its just the safest lane to be in and a lot of champs need to be played safely or dont have a lot of room to play aggressively.

basically mid is popular because you can put the most champions there and make it work where other lanes you can put yourself at a huge disadvantage for your champ choice. so all the people who want to play those champions, have to go mid, artificially creating a large mid lane population.

So you would say champion variety is a major reason?

its moreso a lack of escapes held by most common mid laners. its the shortest lane and distance back to your turret.

variety does have to do with it, you can easily counterpick mid laners and just be a menace against them early forcing them off of cs and exp just for playing a certain way.

Hyper carry role. Damage is massive, durability is low. Easy to light up someone, unlike top lane especially with jungle pressure. Has open access to the entire map easily, plays types of champions that remain relevant all game long and always have large damage as MR is prioritized under armor due to ADCs. Small lanes make managing wards easier, but the amount of entry points and thin walls makes it dangerous and thrilling. Easy to shove and retreat to safety quickly. Regularly gets blue buff.

Should you play mid? Absolutely. I main mid and my queue times are 1-6 minutes at Gold. Don't look at the 20% bonus queue time or whatever, if you do the math, it's a small matter of several seconds. Play mid if you like it, jungle won't get you in any extra games or something. The true measure of game time is actual gameplay, not queue time. Those only become relevant at high elo where players are harder to match/scarce.

I would say because most people, win or lose want to feel like they have the most control over the game their in. Mid lane is the place that (seemingly) allows that kind of control without the discomfort many people experience of having to learn to work outside of lane income. While it does hold true that mid lane is probably the second most importance in sculpting out the future of the match, It's easy to be a average mid lane and hard to be a good one. Unlike top or bottom lane it demands a higher amount of interaction with the rest of the map far more frequently. When you win mid and snowball the other lanes its very rewarding and you feel your impact more acutely. As stated previously, you feel in control, thus the popularity. Of course that high does lead to snobbish mid laner's who ignore the impact of other players and think they can do no wrong.

That makes sense. I can see why people would want the most control over their games.

I've been playing a lot more mid lately because the champions used there are really fun

Mid is alright and it's decent, but a lot of people think that they can be "The Carry" from mid and that's why. Because everyone in SoloQ sucks and needs to be carried.

I like top cuz you don't get instagibbed or instagib anyone. Unless it's Pantheon vs. Kennen or something dumb like that.

Mid lane can have the most impact in the game by far. They are equal distance from the other two lanes and the two main objectives.

People may say junglers have similar pros, but they don't get as much farm and the chance to get kills as often as the mids do.
