Icons as rewards: worth the hassle?

The (recent) influx of people screaming about missions and the need to lock in certain icons got me a bit confused. Apparently, icons matter to a lot of people.

I also noticed that Riot seems to cater to those people with icon rewards, which are sometimes locked behind a paywall.

I understand the urge to collect everything, but I also question though: Are people happy with icons being a relatively relevant part of LoL's rewardsystem (and to a lesser extent its paysystem)?

PS: This post is simpy meant as a discussion about what people find rewarding and what alternatives people who don't care about icons have in mind.

I think the reason for this is that there really isn't anything else to shoot for. Ward skins never go on sale or really do much of anything. Once in awhile they introduce a new one to coincide with the current theme, or have one as part of a package (or reward like in this Worlds missions with Ashe), but for the most part people don't pay much attn. Other than that, we have champs skins which are always on sale or given away or this or that...

That leaves icons. I prefer to use one that is a little out of the ordinary or exclusive, so maybe that's why people go after them. OTOH, I personally don't feel the need to grind for one since I change mine up all the time anyway. One more "special" one isn't gonna make or break me.

The only time I'll ever be happy with an icon reward is when we get nice champion ones. Until I get a well designed image of Morgana as an icon I spit on icons, and it better not cost rp. Or at least something angel related, rip nice order bringer riven icon or whatever.
