Toxicity in league (yay...)
So I'm sure every one that clicked on this discussion have seen a million titles like this one... So I'll get right to it. League is a game that is highly based on teamwork in an environment where verbal behavior is punishable (even though there are mute buttons~!) whereas physical game play is largely not.
I have played league very sparsely the last few months for this reason... The game itself can be very fun (winning or losing!) and very addictive because of how much fun it CAN be. However, the systems the game has in place for punishment are set up to enable trolls to do what they do best.
Example, I have just returned from an 8-day trip out of town. I woke up this morning and wanted to jump into a normal then maybe get a ranked in. As a competitive player I always do a warm up match to make sure I'm playing well before I jump into ranked. As well, I haven't played much at all in the last month so I figured I would jump on support. I queue up and get into the selection lobby, call support and wait for everyone to pick (in case someone troll insta-locks support anyways which is an example of PHYSICAL GAMEPLAY THAT IS NOT PUNISHABLE!!) But oh wait, 3 people called jungle. Oh... wait... 2 people have locked in Udyr and Volibear jungle. Oh. Wait. We now have a third locked in jungler. With clairvoyance. 3 smites on the team is looking good.

Now I get a few choices:
-
Swap to a high ranged ADC and pray. (very high chance of an incoming frustrating game)
-
Attempt to convince one of them to do a kill lane bot with me (not likely and also not optimal) (good chance of an incoming frustrating game)
-
Leave the game and receive a short ban from queues due to behavior that HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH ME.
Step this up to ranked play. You can not leave. You get a feeder or AFK member of your team or even someone playing relatively well but is simply just trolling (things like your jungle Amumu max range bandage tossing the wolves over one wall then flashing the next wall only to smite steal a blue away from your own mid-laner.. Or making passive-aggressive taunts every time a teammate messes up). This can be extremely frustrating and there is no mute button for a teammate trolling in game play.
The game provides to many avenues for trolls to successfully anger people without any real chance of punishment. I'm curious what you guys think..
TL;DR - IMO, if you want to see the community improve and the toxicity start to dissipate then Riot should be looking for ways to resolve PHYSICAL game play trolling. They need to stop focusing on "verbal abuse" because more often than not that is just a symptom of the actual disease.
