@Riot @Morello @ricklessabandon - Let's talk Miss Fortune's Double Up
Miss Fortune has been around for a while. Released way back in 2010 (I feel so old -_- ) she was a fun ADC with a focus on AoE damage with a great personality and an even more epic laugh. Sadly she was nerfed shortly after, overnerfed many would argue and she fell off the spotlight. Over the years she's received some QoL changes here and there such as the much needed change of her ultimate to physical damage, it helped but didn't quite get her to where she needed to be and as such this year she received a rework by ricklessabandon that aimed to bump up her power and give some synergy to her kit. While the goal to bump up her power was a success I don't feel a bump in power was what Miss Fortune needed the most, but instead further QoL work, specifically to her Double Up (though the Make it Rain buff was much appreciated).
Double Up has always been an awkward spell that I feel has held her back. The second target acquisition has always been, well, awkward to say the least. Originally it was just purely random so it was very hard to use or play against properly but recently with her rework there were some changes that tried to add some reliability and gameplay to it which imho have just failed. The big problem as I see it is that Double Up is MF's main harassment tool that would be at its peak during the laning phase but the Impure Shots interaction where Double Ups second shot will prioritize a target afflicted by Impure Shots is something you'd generally only see used in a teamfight since that's when she's most likely to have Impure Shots on enemies. In terms of laning phase you're essentially asking her to walk up to an enemy, AA them, walk back and then try for a Double Up. Doesn't make much sense does it. No this target paradigm would only have its uses during teamfights, specifically right after an ult (as per the reworks changes), where she'd want to use Double Up the least except for the AA reset in which case you're not using it for the second shot at all are you.
I originally felt like Double Up could remain as is and just have more reliability added to the targeting paradigms (eg: guaranteed to hit a champion within 30 degrees behind the initial target with it becoming less likely the further out you go) but this added power in reliability without too much added gameplay and I started feeling like the spell could be taken that one step further. It also didn't solve the problem that the bounce's targeting paradigms are a bit confusing and not too reliable so there was that too.
My proposal is a rework to Double Up to make the bounce a projectile.
Currently the spell acquires a second target after hitting the first and just goes for it. Not much play or counterplay there. What I propose is that the bounce becomes a projectile that can be dodged and can pass through units (full damage to first target hit after bounce, half damage to all subsequent targets, you could take it a step further and have it apply on hit effects to all targets hit like it does currently for just the two). Because the bounce is now a projectile that can be dodged I feel that it should always target towards the closest enemy champion to keep it flavorful and to keep it line in feel to what it is now (and also to stop it from being a near Lucian Q ripoff >_> ) and in the absence of enemy champions just simply bouncing straight behind the target. This creates the much needed reliability Double Up has been missing for all these years as well as predictability that both the Miss Fortune player and the opponent can play around. I would also like to see the bounce range increased to at least the 575 it originally was, again now that it's a dodgeable projectile there's no reason for it to be so short. Also please keep in mind that casting the spell does not change, the change is with the shot that comes out from the initial target.
It's a simple change but one I feel MF has been in great need for since her release. There's no fun in the randomized (or near randomized today) nature of the second target acquisition and that forces the spell to feel unimpactful outside of an AA reset. Double Up is suppose to be Miss Fortune's harassment tool but it just isn't reliable enough to be used as such, at least not well. There's also the plus that the pass through projectile enhances her AoE role! :D
