So if you dont know I'm a varus main and I used to love playing him AD Caster building him like jayce or blue Ez, but that doesnt seem to work in season 6, im starting to build him a little like Lucian now so ES into IE then rapid fire cannon and the rest is situatinal, I was just courious what you guys think Varus's state in the game is at the moment I dont think he is in the best position but I dont think he is that bad.
I think he is in California. The dude wears nothing so it stands to reason he lives somewhere warm.
I love Varus, he's one of the few ADCS I play (I'm a support/mage main). The new Essence Reaver makes him a lot better than he used to be - before his CDR and mana usage made it so he couldn't be used as he was "supposed" to, but now he can be. I like that you don't need to rush IE on him anymore either due to all the other options that work better for him. SO he's better than he was before, but still I think he needs to be a bit more viable since right now he's a bit situational. In some scenarios he can be amazing (I recently stole dragon and got a kill at the same time with his Q the last game I played him) but other times he can be not effective at all.
Still, I was hoping he'd get a better rework on his skills. His Q is awesome and his ult has amazing utility, but all his other skills and his passive are just meh. I think his w should be an actual skill, and either have its effect as the skills passive, or replace his actual passive with it. Honestly the main reason I play him is because I like his character and aesthetic moreso than the gameplay of him.
I started playing him with the season changes since I've been mystery gifted 3 varus skins, he feels pretty strong partially because the Essence reaver allows him to get CDR and crit easier, kinda unifying his 2 build styles
That and the change to his R makes his lvl 6 burst surprisingly stronger,
He feels really strong, particularly early and mid game
He is trash tier atm at mid.
And below average in bot lane.
with the new items/masteries he's in a better spot, go manamune first, then essense reaver into ghostblade and he's good, add thunderlords and +5%CD along the way he's in an awesome spot right now.
Played him in a game as ADC recently. Seemed fine to me. Lost lane because my support was a potato and gave up kills like it was candy, but stalled the game (thanks partly to our top laner who got ahead) and got my core items (as well as some MR so Teemo would stop popping me like a balloon) and started doing big boy damage. Got a triple kill which lets us close out the game.

Hope this might help you in terms of build. Death's Dance and Banshee's Veil helped me survive Teemo's burst and retaliate (also, DD let me heal from my Q, which was nice).
try out essence reaver, the cdr is pretty good on him
I think he's actually pretty good now since the new itemization allows him to effectively merge his ad caster and adc roles. 
I go with a different path but end up with the same result as your initial 3 items. I haven't experienced with him too much considering there is so much you can do with him.
One thing I know for sure is he seems hard to fit inside the current competitive meta comps
I think his lore that he's a hunter for his village leads you to believe he'd be faster than he is. I love his Q, but his ult feels clunky and I dislike his E.
I think he's a pretty fun champ but they should swap his E for something else. An AOE slow with small amount of damage just isnt that useful on him imo for anything other than an execute and in some cases wave clear. I would love if they replaced it with like a long cool down dash that leaves a trail and slows dealing magic or true damage equal to like 1% of their max hp per second or something. Also as live stands I think they should buff the base damage of Q by 50 points or so.
