Need a tanky supp to add to my roster!

Fanny Forecast··2 votes·1,311 views

I'm a support main. My issue? I HATE the tank supps I've tried. Alistar has little use outside his headbutt/knockup combo. Braum only partially fits my play style (I hate sacrificing myself for the adc when if I were playing, for example, Nami, we could both get out easily) but not my fave. Thresh and Blitz are alright, I do own and play Thresh, Blitz is a POTENTIAL next buy.

I feel like my supp roster is incomplete without a tank. My main issue is tanks are typically highly immobile. The only tanks I really play are Irelia, who is a juggernaut and is mobile and thresh, who has enough cc that his inward-only mobility doesnt bother me too much.

My baes are the nature babes - Janna, Nami, Zyra. I also play Thresh, Karma, Lulu, Orianna, and Soraka. When I'm not supporting, I play champs like Irelia, Akali, etc. with the exceptions being Lux and Cass, who are immobile but thrive on enemy immobility and Maokai (jungle only), who is semi-mobile while being tanky as a mofo to allow time for just walking right out.

I used to do Galio supp, mostly back when mages were hardcore ruling Summoners Rift, so he's another one I'm considering. I played Taric support shortly before the pre-season patches where he became a god due to AD champs being cray, but with his rework coming at some point in the near future, I'm hesitant to main him.

TL;DR: I need a tanky supp champ to add to my roster. I like mobile or immobile-thriving-on-immobility champions. I hate Alistar. I'm considering Blitzcrank, Galio, and Taric. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, as well as reasons why you think I'd like them.

Leona , blitz ,tahm

Leona is easiet to play strong in lane and good roamer but require your adc to proc your passive

Blitz pick out carries but sometimes hook backfire like hooking a tank into your carries

Tahm broken building Tanky Annoying cc and can escape with your carry if things goes bad

I'd prefer alistar because he's just really fun and easy to play decent at all stages of the game

Fanny Forecast1 votes

Blitz is on my list of to-buys (maybe not to-play often tho), Tahm is a "I'd buy but he's so damn expensive and I can't tell if I'd actually like him or not" champ so I've been hesitant to buy him. He's free right now, so I guess now's my chance to test him out before buying him.

Trying the champ for free is the best way to go first. Specially if you plan on using RP.

Fanny Forecast1 votes

I'm going with IP because I'm too damn poor to buy RP. I got $10 for xmas, used on Zyra, Thresh, and a 3-day EXP boost for this acc. Lol

But ye, defo the way to go. Love when champs I'm interested in become free. Thats how I found Zyra. Was free during one of my first weeks playing, then recently was free again so I played again and was like <333333

SnugglePuggle942 votes

I love Zyra, but I take her mid mostly. Right now I don't play her much cause most of the time I might have to play against the OP monster Zed. She's a great support though but not a tank that you are looking for.

Nautilus.

Fanny Forecast1 votes

Will defo consider the king of peel to match my main, the queen of peel.

Ralanr2 votes

He really is the king of peel. I've saved my support from dashing enemies so many times.

Try out leona

Trust me, best purchase possible

Fanny Forecast1 votes

Tried her. I hate people who can ONLY all in and their entire kit is all inning. I didn't enjoy playing her.

Akenero3 votes

Actually, shes a good peeler, use e to dash to the carry, and q them, proceed to walk away :D

Also why the hell did you downvote my post, i was trying to help T_T And you never stated that

Fanny Forecast2 votes

I know, I never said that. I half said it with my braum statement, but not directly. I only downvoted cuz I don't like her, I'm tired as all hell and realize that downvoting a valid suggestion because I dont like the champ is really dumb. Sorry xD

SnugglePuggle944 votes

Leona although has no mobility spells she has a dash, root, and mega CC. Volibear is a funny support in certain matchups. High mobility but not much utility. Nautilus god tier support. Galio I love Galio as a support as he has a self-heal, mega resistance shield, and high damage, but is mega slow and melee. TahmKench Everyone loves/hates this monster.

Leadpaintchips1 votes

Volibear actually has utility, just not defensive utility. That flip/slow combo is crazy.

Fanny Forecast1 votes

I did Galio supp during S5 when the AP champs were hardcore strong to counter em. So fun.

Volibear doesn't seem to really fit my style, but IDK.

Considering Nautilus and Tahm.

SnugglePuggle941 votes

I've only played Tahm once and he's fun. He's also mega OP as a laner. He completely mutilated me as Nidalee the other day. Malphite is also a funny support, has capability of stealing movement speed and AS reduction.

Leona

Based on your description, she's perfect for you. She single-handedly got me to Gold in Season 3. Try her out.

Crossette2 votes

Try Bard

Partholonian1 votes

Can be quite fun, but not tanky at all.

Crossette1 votes

You can build pretty tanky and still do significant damage, plus it really doesn't matter what you build with all of your utility.

Here's my (kind of) average support build: item 3092 item 2045 item 3065 item 3060 item 3742 item 3117

You could always merge FQC and sightstone late game for item 2301 and buy something efficient.

UNBENCH THE KENCH UNLOAD THE TOAD UNCLOG THE FROG PROHIBIT THE RIBBIT EMPOWER THE DEVOUR TahmKench

Doesn't 'Prohibit the RIbbit' mean the opposite of what you want it to?

On topic, Blitz, Galio and Taric are all fun but the last two are pretty situational and Taric is getting a rework soon so I would hold off on that for the moment if I was you. I suggest testing out Tahm this week (because free) and if you don't like him then braum or nautilus are probably good choices based on what you have said. The thing that is worrying me though is '(I hate sacrificing myself for the adc when if I were playing, for example, Nami, we could both get out easily)' when soaking up damage for your carry is a large part of why you pick a tank support. So I am a little scared you might just not enjoy tank supports in general. So maybe just do some hardcore testing and see which one feels the best for you.

Taric Be truly outrageous

Just Blame Jenny2 votes

Have you tried Poppy ? While not traditionally considered a support, I've had some success with her in that role since the rework.

  • Passive gives her poke in lane and ranged relic shield procs.
  • Q gives her solid damage in an engage. Doubles as a zoning tool in a pinch, and when paired with her W for positioning, can even be used to cut off the enemy during an allied gank.
  • W gives her natural tankiness (much like Leona), allowing her to perform as a frontliner even on a budget. Also gives her peel against dash-oriented champions (common in the current meta) and bonus movement speed to catch out targets.
  • E gives her solid peel and a strong engage in lane. When paired with her Q, one misplay in the lane phase can be devastating for the enemy team.
  • R thwarts ganks in the laning phase, and during teamfights, operates as peel or and interrupt, and can be used to set up picks.

Late reply, but I've considered new poppy for this. Not sure, she's super cheap, so I'm probs gonna try it out soon. Thanks for the reply! :3

My main issue is tanks are typically highly immobile.

My first reaction as an exception is Leona, but you might sometimes die to cover retreats on her too.

I admire your ability to not die on Nami, if you're not fooling yourself. I often die on squishy supports feeling that if I were someone tankier I could have survived that.

You might also try Tahm Kench, he is immobile but has a decent amount of cc. And his best way to get his partner out is to get out himself too.

P.S. I'm curious if you're implying that you play Orianna as a support? I thought she was too mana hungry to be effective at it, and then if you build for mana, you are insanely squishier even than mid Ori because of your lower level as a support, while being just as immobile. Plus your cc isn't that good pre-6.

Fanny Forecast1 votes

With the supps I play, I dont die cuz of excessive peel and high-ish move speed (plus mobi boots help a LOOOOOOT but they're inefficient on most tanks). Zyra is the one I have issues slight with, but even then, I rush a rylais after my supp item, sightstone, and boots, so I just Q-W, spawn a ranged plant, instant slow to anyone and anything in the area.

I do, occasionally, play Ori supp. Her shield is very efficient for laning phase and her role in lane is more of a zone/poke support (think Sona but her zone extends further than the actual champ). Plus the speed buff/slow is EXTREMELY good for catching up to enemy laners who try to run. Her mana issues are solved by buying Athene's and/or Serephs. On supp ori, I personally go catalyst first item, then athenes, then finish catalyst into either RoA or RGlory (former if ahead or even, latter if behind). She works well because her base damages are high and her scalings are only moderate, so CDR is huge on Ori. Perma-casting abilities and really good autos.

Try considering bruam he's actually the king of peel slows shield and shields

Said in OP that I'm not a fan of Braum. Tried him during his recent free week, not a fan.

Taric

or Annie Brand Morgana Shaco Fiddlesticks Lux Kayle

Janna Nami are the best

Fanny Forecast1 votes

Lux and Kayle supp are amazing, I do play them from time to time. IDK why, Morg just doesnt agree with me. I do like fidd, but pref jungle over lane fidd. Brand and Annie I do not agree with play style wise, way too bursty with not enough utility or mobility.

Shaco supp is disgusting. You sicken me. D: (kidding, i just dont see the appeal of it. boxes dont proc spellthiefs :/)

Ravenhale1 votes

My initial issues with Morg was her Black Shield did not do nearly as much as I wanted it to. It only cancels out CC and magic damage, so physical damage gets through unhindered. She definitely has her moments. Black Shield cancels Blitz's grab, Thresh's Hook and Leona's stun. In this sense, Black Shield is more pre-emptive anti-engage than a shield for winning a trade (Lux & Janna). It also eats up a lot of the damage a burst mage support can offer (Annie/Brand).

The other issue I continue to have with Morg is her ult. I'm at the point where I don't bother using it, since it gets me killed more often than not (even if I have Zhonya's).

So what? Most 1 for 1s are to your team's advantage if you're the support. Being the 1 in a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 is even better.

Zane Zephyr1 votes

Shen's not too bad I don't think. He has his taunt, his W shield so he can take some more damage, and his Q for sustain.

Woodsy25751 votes

Can't go wrong with Braum

The Yetii Rider1 votes

I actually play Malphite as a tank support with great effect.

You dislike immobility? Say hello to your magical R button, which changes your name to Dr. Mundo because you go where you pleases.

Malphite also has 335 base MS, which is quite decent for positioning, and a point and click slow that speeds him up.

Attack speed slows are the bane of ADC existence.

Nunu is also an option (buff you and your carry's MS and AS, lower their whole team's MS and AS, and Kalista can't dodge any of your stuff) but he's more immobile.

AL0001 votes

Trundle

he is one of strong tanky supporter... you will know why...

DeathBurst1 votes

Personally I play Braum and Leona. As Braum, you shouldn't really sacrifice. Apply your passive, stun them, kill'em all. But it's much more reactive, defensive. When I want both a Tank and playing aggressive, Leona is best.

Another to consider is Nautilus, and I could see Maokai work as a support, now that mana regen on support items was buffed.

Tahm has a very specific and deep play style. I read your other comment about him, and you must try it before buying it, it's very unique.

Taric is still legit as fuck.

Pandemic Punch1 votes

Try Shen and Gragas. Both are mobile and can dash through walls which make deep warding much easier. When playing as shen, not having to rely on mana is a big plus and if your adc knows how vorpal blade works, you have infinite sustain. Also has global map presence at 6. Gragas is wonderful post 6 as well with a game changing ult. Gragas is one of those Support picks to take if you don't have any Faith in your adc. Malphite also. Malphite just sucks early because he offers very little protection for the adc but can still be a beast later.
