WHAT ARE PEOPLE THINKING???

Supporting is fun :) People just want to play the role of the badass, super strong carry. It's a pride thing - you get to brag at how good you are when you rack up the most kills. BUT an intelligent person knows that the support is the key to a carry's success.

I've been learning Soraka over the past two weeks, and I've learned my heals are just as important as the ADC's damage. One of the best moments in this past two weeks has been hitting 6 and immediately ulting, to see this a few seconds later:

PersonPlayingTop (Nasus) has slain OtherPersonPlayingTop PersonPlayingTop (Nasus): SORAKA PersonPlayingTop (Nasus): OMG THE HEALS

Orisi2 votes

Exactly this. This is why it's important to have supports around. I was in a game where there was me just up, and two 1v1s going on. My ult turned them both into an ace for us and allowed us to push forward drastically, If I hadn't healed them, both fights would've gone the other way and shit would've gone down.

As a carry main, I agree. Without the support, the carry has very little going for them early on. The success of bot lane is usually dictated by the success of the supports, unless there is a huge skill disparity between one of the carries and their enemies for them to feed off of.

I don't leave a game without thanking my support if I play a game as a carry. Seriously. I can't thank you support mains enough. You go through hell for a thankless jackass most of the time for the sake of the team - nothing is more badass than that.

The most fun I have are the games the minions win while we're fighting in the jungle.

SecretAgentHulk4 votes

Oy vey. I play Braum, Sona, and Soraka mainly (saving up for Thresh and Nami) and I can tell supports there are three numbers in your k/d stats, and the third one is important to you as a support. If you play a game where you were 0/6/24, you hit positive k/d.

Pikmints7 votes

Bah, my k/d isn't considered positive (when I support) until I have more assists than everyone else on my team has kill participation individually.

It's because they don't actually understand what supports do.

DrCyanide10 votes

They do not know the art of being a carry support.

Nami is my support of choice, because even if our mid disconnects I can usually cover for them. I tend to follow the "heal to death" mentality for item purchases. If the game is going our way, I can typically take one of the enemy team's carries down 1/2 health just on my own.

I'm not advocating skipping sightstone, trying to steal kills, or taking CS while the carry is there, but it's entirely possible to help deal damage while being a support.

Taric is my support for Top lane tank

I think this discussion was about the support role in the bottom lane, not support champs in general. Pretty much any support that has sustain can be considered top lane viable, bonus points to Taric for being tanky on top of that.

Thudloderp7 votes

Speaking as someone who played pretty much nothing but Taric or Leona for a year straight in Season 2 or 3, I feel pretty justified in bailing queue if the tyranny of the majority tries to make me play support.

I'm aware that makes me kind of an asshole, but in a YEAR of straight supporting, you learn a lot about why people tend to GET volunteered for it instead of volunteering for it.

1 : You're perpetually broke. The support salary sucks, and the gold gain items don't help matters enough. Even if all three of them stacked, you're still not making as much money each minute than someone with good CS. This problem is compounded by-

2 : The support dues you have to PAY with that salary are freakishly high. When you're living off passive gold gain, Sightstone is damned expensive, and the stats (ie that thing I need to not just be a ward dispenser) it gives are crap. And holy crap, if you don't rush that thing, you catch so much damned flak. Then, after getting it, you need to start actually getting the items you need to be relevant, which is fiendishly difficult, because, again, you're perpetually broke, AND you just spent a good several minutes of your income on a piddly HP increase, free wards, and not getting yelled at. Speaking of yelling-

3 : The roles makes you utterly codependent, and codependent on someone who's likely to be the biggest douchecanoe on the team. It makes a fair deal of sense that whatever role has the most focus on being 'the carry' tends to attract players who are just completely insufferable. Considering that the traditional bot lane is a Support and an AD Carry, there's no way I'm volunteering myself for the abuse of a random stranger if the whims of fate don't shine on him.

4 : Supports damn near never get any recognition for a job well done, but get far too much scorn for a mistake. Ever notice how people tend to stop printing out a person's score at KD? Notice how the end game lobby doesn't track things like CC inflicted or damage mitigated, or how giving buffs only inflates the buff-ee's damage dealt numbers? Basically the only things the majority of people notice about a support's actions are how often they -croak-. And that's a recipe for fun, ain't it?

Yeah....I play this game for fun? And uh....being the team's bitch isn't fun.

Hegemony1 votes

Pretty much hit the nail on the head. After 2 years of supporting, it finally became painfully obvious that when comparing the support role to every other role in the game I was shorting myself of the fun that makes League what it is. I agree i never volunteered to support, its that the role was always open and the less of an impact one makes on any particular game the less toxicity is likely to come your way.

Ghostly681 votes

Uhhh.... what? I'm a support main and I really don't recognize any of these things.

  1. Between masteries (Scavenger & Greed are crucial) and the GP10 items, I don't have too much of a problem getting gold. I average around 10k a game, and with the assist streak change from the beginning of Season 4 I'll earn more than that in games where I'm really on point.

  2. Sightstone is 800g. That really isn't that much at all. As I noted above, I earn about 10k a game: a Sightstone and Mobi Boots are pretty standard on supports and that's only 1600g; add 2200g for the Tier 3 GP10 item and we're at 3800g. Let's say you bought a pink or some green wards and pots to round things out to 4000g: that still leaves me with, on average, 6000g to buy whatever I want.

  3. I don't know which champions you supported with but if I know things are going poorly in lane and there's little hope, as soon as I have Mobis I'll roam. I supported my way out of Bronze last season: I have seen all kinds of abuse and toxicity and the thing that I learned is you're not constrained to helping one lane and one teammate.

  4. I don't play for any of that stuff, though. If I make a really good engage or save someone, I feel satisfied because a) I was able to recognize a developing situation and make a decision and b) I was mechanically proficient enough to carry that decision through and see it was the correct one.

I play support because it's a role I enjoy and I'm pretty good at it. I've never felt like I was the team's bitch.

Hegemony1 votes
  1. Great! you can buy a locket. What a fun and engrossing active!
  2. Why is it that the support has to get the sightstone instead of going for damage like everyone else? Sounds like enforced meta.
  3. Hear that supports? If your ADC is a tool, just go hop into another lane instead, no one will be mad at that.
  4. You have situational awareness, but you could be doing that in any other lane and role and with the added luxury of being able to carry your team.

Doing what is best to win isn't always the funnest path.

A common example is turtling. Turtling is pretty boring, you sit in your base and essentially just wait. However, there are times when then team needs to turtle in order to have a chance of achieving victory. More often than not, a team will not turtle when they should, especially if they had been winning. This will often occur in plat/diamond games.

I thought about WHY this occurs, why won't people just sit in base for a bit and wait? Because it is boring, and even though it is the "best" path to victory, it is more fun to roam around outside the base on the off chance you catch 1 of them out of position, rather than waiting for them to make a mistake trying to dive.

Playing support, for a lot of people, is the same way, boring. You sit around basically baby sitting one person. You relay a lot on that person. And if that person can't CS, it is even more boring/frustrating.

Personally, I didn't mind playing support season 3. But then all the supports got reworked/changed and now I find it dreadfully boring. Adcs will complain often, or won't back you up, or can't CS, or people won't let you pop your stacks, or they won't heal you, or they complain about wards....the list goes on.

Now, if I am made to support people I don't know, I generally just pretend I am in a solo lane and CS and mute/ignore everyone. I personally find it more enjoyable, and despite what all the people say, it isn't reportable nor is it trolling. There is no law I MUST support and MUST not cs. People need to show more respect to other peoples play styles and stop the whole not meta must report/rage (side note: Riot really should remove blind pick and just have team builder)

On the other hand, some people love support like my friend. He basically only plays it. He loves the whole baiting/saving people thing and enjoys the strategic placement of wards.

P.S. I wrote this entire post while "supporting". Team is currently winning :)

EfficientDynamo8 votes

I agree with your points about the motivation against safe play (it can be boring), but it sounds like you have a pretty bad attitude about supporting people you don't know. Does that mean that if you play normals you warn your adc in champ select that you won't play by the meta? Because if not, you are at minimum being rude since you know that they will have an expectation that you will play according to the meta (e.g. not taking CS).

You are free to play however you want, but from what you wrote it sounds like you are writing everyone off as a lane partner if they aren't on your friends list.

Rock Rockburgh8 votes

Not only that, there is a very good reason that supports don't take any farm-- they just don't need it as much because they tend to have high-utility skills with little scaling. On top of that, the ADC is by far your best base-pushing tool in most teams, and if they aren't fed they can't do very much. A team is just so much stronger with a certain farm distribution. If the ADC could jungle at the same time, that would be the optimal strategy even though it leaves two champs without any gold. (Or maybe if the toplaner could jungle. I'm not sure.)

Insisting on taking CS as a support isn't only rude, it's just sloppy play. Though apparently he managed to hit diamond with this mindset, so who am I to judge.

Bixits4 votes

Soraka is my support of choice, but I also play Janna and Nami and sometimes at the request of a teammate play a completely random support like Fiddlesticks or Veigar (that E!) to throw the enemy off. Honestly I kinda got thrown into the support role because no one EVER wants to support and we don't want to risk a random so I started doing it and I rather like it. Although mid-lane champs are my favorite for this reason I don't get much pvp practice with them outside of ARAM. So sometimes I'm happy when my Twitch ADC asks me to play Veigar. And anyone can feel free to add me <3

Vertanium4 votes

the support can easily be a second jungler if you play it right. The People that say LoL is about damage and K'ds are probably bronze or heavy COD players.

Byrnes4 votes

Support requires a decent knowledge of the game, the willingness to promote the rest of your team, and a general necessity for selflessness (if you're playing the role classically). In case you haven't noticed, that defines like <10% of the players who play this game. Until a particular ranking, the game is a tug of war of who can spam abilities and be in the right place at the right time - something supports can't really be a part of for the first half of the game (in fact, carries usually yell at you if you mess with their laning particulars).

On top of that they are usually blamed, picked out during engagements, and generally have to itemize in particular, team-pleasing, ways.

Forest Gem2 votes

As a support main that usually alternates between Soraka and Karma I have to agree. Especially if people don't realize why I might avoid certain items.

For example, I avoid building item 2049 on Soraka because of the health it provides and it may actually work against me more than anything, but in one game our jungler actually told me to build it. It made me wonder if they even knew how her W works now. And not to mention how often I get blamed for feeding when the ADC isn't even trying in the first place and how often I get raged at by them when I AA minions (even if I rarely last hit them. When I support my CS rarely ever gets into the triple digits anyways).

Kynami1 votes

Get the bloody Sightstone. The 15 HP per heal penalty is peanuts and very easily outdone with a small amount of AP when landing Q's and not hiding behind your ADC being a non-interactive curmudgeon. You'd have a valid reason not to want to upgrade to the Ruby Sighstone though. But the 75g x4 saved per back adds up. Basically, as long as you are going to green ward 11 or more times during a match you'd be better off getting it than doing without.

Now there are certainly times where delaying sightstone by not buying it first back and picking up a few green wards alongside another purchase might be a better option than rushing it. But the gold saved over the duration of the match and the objective control and rotation knowledge granted by wards is invaluable.

Why screw over you adc like that? There are tons of mid laners and top laners that can be played support, xin zhao, volibear, syndra, orianna, etc. don't be a douche and force a duo lane, just try to adapt, have fun, and win!

Hegemony2 votes

I think this IS his way of adapting and having fun. If someone doesn't call and pick the support roll before him, hes sees it as an injustice, as if he has been wronged/trolled into taking the least enjoyable role. He doesn't want to "waste" his time with that which appears a common theme ITT. Its bad game design when 1 out of 5 of the "roles" required is currently so unwanted it take a minimum of 20 minutes in team builder to find one.

Because supports can't carry. Everything they do requires at least one other non-braindead person to be successful. I don't know about most people, but I prefer to put as little of my fate in other people's hands as possible. I'll support if I have to, but I'll avoid it as much as possible.

O RLY? Let's see how well you carry going 1v2 in bot lane. Or having no vision. Or not having that teamfight winning ult or shield.

Carrying isn't about kills. In fact, getting a lot of kills by yourself often means your going to lose because you kill starve your other damage dealers. Carrying is about playing smart and helping the rest of your team play smart. It's about getting everyone on your team fed/buffed, not just you.

You may be the star QB, but if you don't have a good offensive line blocking for you you're not going to be a star QB.

A Slime Appears1 votes

"O RLY? Let's see how well you carry going 1v2 in bot lane."

I've seen ADCs do well 1v2...never seen a support do the same.

"Or having no vision."

Because only supports can ward?

"Or not having that teamfight winning ult or shield."

Nami's wave doesn't win the team fight. Her allies taking advantage of the CC the wave provides to kill the enemy team is what wins the team fight. Which is why I said "you need at least one other non-braindead teammate" because that wave alone will just tickle them and do nothing. Your shield does nothing if the ADC is retarded and runs. That Janna knockback you pull off does nothing if your team is too stupid to run and dies anyway.

"Carrying isn't about kills."

It's all about kills. I'm sure you'll counter with "objectives are more important" and that's technically true, but man those objectives sure are easier to take when people are dead, aren't they? Good luck sieging every objective when all 5 of them are alive, and good luck destroying the nexus without killing anyone. Hope you picked Ziggs and Xerath!

"In fact, getting a lot of kills by yourself often means your going to lose because you kill starve your other damage dealers"

Yes because by themselves supports are useless. You don't have the damage to takes dragon/baron/tower. You aren't going to erase the enemy carries. All you can do is press your CC buttons when you have allies around and hope someone else is competent enough to capitalize.

"Carrying is about playing smart and helping the rest of your team play smart. It's about getting everyone on your team fed/buffed, not just you."

Yes, the supports job is to help champs that can actually carry. On that I agree.

There's an upside to this thought though. While support can't carry (1-6 they can effectively carry bot lane though) ,if you are not supporting, your bot lane has double the chance of having a brain dead person and losing the lane really badly making the enemy ADC a terror to reckon with.

As a support you can also ensure your team gets dragon most of the time which is what I did last season to improve my rank (after my terrible start last season -10 win/loss deficit I ended up +10 win/loss difference).

Pretty sure that tied for the most kills, the second least deaths AND 33 of 38 team kill participation means I carried as support. No damage runes, pure tank, sightstone. EVERYTHING a good support should do. "supports cant carry" HA! Bads cant carry, get over yourself and do the best you can with your champ. Make the right plays and it makes 0 difference who you chose at champ select. http://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/1654757531/38204883?tab=overview

Picking support will not guarantee you victory.

Picking a role which is capable of becoming a carry in the lategame has the possibility of winning you the game, as opposed to you playing support and having all your allies fail to play correctly (And lose miserably to the enemy team's superior positioning).

People are not morons, they know what their chances of victory are. If you are a support character in a team that prioritizes personal achievement over team objectives (Usually that ally that keeps threatening to report you if you don't pick support to polish his shoes), you have no way to change the outcome of the game.

Supporting should have never become a mandatory role in this game, the role should remain an option, but not a slot which demands one of the 5 players become everyone else's maid / servant that gets none of the fun (Gold / Plays).

Some players also win to actually play a role they like, this is a game, not homework. People come here to enjoy themselves.

If someone does not pick support, he should not be shot down for it.

This is true up until about mid game. Then you aren't much more than dead if you get into a fight on your own, unless you are so completely stomping the enemy lane that you are more fed than their team as a support. Which isn't a good game, that's a stomp.

Support has been and always will be the thankless role where if they lose lane its cause the support isnt peeling, warding or just gettign the adc fed. but if they win its cause the adc, jungler, and apc did their jobs in gettign the kills... I can see why people dont want to support cause they might have been gettign flamed in their last few games from trolls.. Personally ill state in champion selection. Mid pref but will support... 9/10 times ill support cause they will ban out my mains for mid.. so i go with good old Morg or Leona in the support role.. i dunno.. but it has got alot better with the new changes riot has made for support items and stuff... the addition of the ward trinkets is nice.. so the warding wars we used to have in season 1-3 is now longer a huge issue. although id like to see the pink wards stealth a little bit.. maybe be visable within say a 200 range. its too easy for pinks to be killed off... i wouldnt care if they put a time limit o them like normal wards.. i dunno.. but im off topic.. so ill end it here.. like alot of poeple have stated.. its alot of things.. whether its ego, not good at it period, or just dont want to get raged on... being a support now if BY FAR better then being a support in any of the previous seasons....

Well, who are you to tell someone how they should feel about something? Look, being a tool is never ok, but let's just say someone really DOES hate a specific role. They say that they'll happily fill any other role but X role, but still get jammed into it for whatever reason.

Do you like doing something you hate? How would you feel about the people who forced you to do it?

Maybe, next time, instead of forcing someone into a role they loathe do it yourself, instead?

Also, realize that this is me playing devil's advocate more than anything - but no one enjoys being told they have to do something they dislike... especially in a game they're playing for fun. See the problem? Doing something for fun, end up being made to do something you don't like?

I personally loathe supporting. Like seriously hate and despise it - ADCs lots of times go back and forth between hyper aggressive and uber passive. Generally without any hints about when they're going to do it. Mostly in situations or against opponents where it's just an awful idea. If I'm on some kind of voice chat with them, it might be ok - Riot really needs to add this to LoL, btw - but for the most part that's not a thing.

I still support, because sometimes that's just how it goes. But when that happens, that's generally my last game of the day because having to play support sucks any fun or enjoyment I could possibly have playing the game away. I certainly don't endorse throwing, feeding, or AFKing, but I'm probably not going to be able to play my best simply because I totally hate doing it... it's not a conscious thing, but it is VERY hard to concentrate when I've been forced to do something I dislike that much. I always try my hardest, of course, but i again - I play LoL for fun. 4 random strangers just forced me to do something I dislike. Expecting me to be as good at it as someone who practices the role and enjoys it is silly.
