gnar seems really oppressive in lane

JAGMAG··3 votes·716 views

i don't mind him after lane phase so much because rage management is important but in the lane phase he just seems super oppressive espicailly against a melee he just non stop procs hyper on you then when he transforms into mega if you try and farm he just stuns you and keeps banging on you and you end up with the choice of feeding or losing so much cs because you cant leave tower and then he gets super farmed

idk any thoughts?

dodge the boomerang and be aggresive. Pay attention to his rage bar and don't be near him when he transforms (unless you have the power to take him, but he has a stun, a slow, and a gap closer). Harass him down, as melee (aka Garen, Wu, Riven, etc) wait for him tp pop his boomerang and then do some damage, then back off.

my problem was i could never gap close on him when he was in ranged form even if i slowed him he would just q and or hop away and then in melee form id run up and he would just smash me down back of then q me i could just never get any good trades off

His hop has a semi long cooldown (18 sec at level 1) and is the last thing gnars max, so make him waste it, aka get as close to him. I usualy can scare him away with garen, wu, and riven, for they all three have gao closing abilties. His hop is annoying, but if he wastes it, go back in to do some damage. Also DONT go in when he is mega. If you are a ranged top then its easy to just poke him down, but his stun will cause damage (usually with the followup abilties). If all esle fails just focus on wave clear and freeze, or ask for the junglers help.

If you pick into him, pick a champ with high poke. You force the rage and then you can proceed to continue harrass or back off.

If he transforms he's very immobile. You can abuse the hell out of this. Just make sure when he's about to rage that you back off to a point where he can't jump on you.

i never pick into him lol when i see him im like nope not going top lane

His range form already is really weak imo. In lane I mostly destroy gnar, I dont see why they should nerf him even more.

for being so strong in melee, he needs to be more vulnerable in ranged form.

he has a slow, movement speed buff and isntant gap closer available that he can use too freely. its a lot of kiting tools stacked on top of each other. imo they should remove the speed boost on his auto attacks and restrict his hop to only be able to be used as double hop, to force him to have a target to use it.

problem i see with the thing is, that he can already kite well with te slow and speed boost. but he can sit on the hop cooldown the entire time without any drawbacks, until he makes a mistake or overextends. then he jumps away with it and resumes kiting.

and many times even if you get through all his mobility tools and cc you have to back off anyways, because he transforms before you can kill him. and you simply cant afford being around for that.

Was really surprised to have success against him with Fiora, I found she counters him very well. I made a mistake early and gave up FB to him, but after that back I returned with more damage than him, and just poked him down with a Q, then CS'd as I was dodging his skill shots. With Fio I would just Q whenever it was up and then back out, by the time he used his Mega form I would disengage, which eventually lead to him jumping me mega under my tower, I W'd his stun, which stunned him right back then wiped him out. It's just a matter of finding a champ that can counter poke him and you're in a good shape.

fiora does make sense since she can counter his q and jump on him even after hes used all his escapes

but shes probably going to get nerfed in the next two patches

Play him and see what hurts you.

i know what hurts me i never see the gnar pick coming its always a counter pick to me or at best just a oppressive lane

its opressive becase

  1. q and the cooldown on q is pretty short and its hard to dodge when up close trying to charge him
  2. hyper is pretty easy to proc since gnars AS seems fairly high and q also procs hyper
  3. you manged to dodge the q and close in on him maybe even cced him then he just hops away
  4. his mega form is a cc machine making it hard to all in/ or even trade meaningfully with him without you ending up on the worse end.
  5. all this accumulates in a cs advantage that grows and grows and grows getting him much further ahead then you

Then you should play champs you are more comfortable blind picking.

If Gnar is close enough to Q you without being able to dodge it, he is close enough to abuse in his ranged form. Even with hyper, he shouldn't be outtrading you in mini form. His hop is highly dependent on position. Yeah, just stay away from mega gnar lol. I don't know, I personally don't have that big of an issue against Gnar. Unless of the course the Gnar is smurfing and would be beating me with any champ lol.

Poke, poke, poke, and more poke. Engage when he makes a mistake. If you are playing a champ without a decent gap closer you will probably need help from your jungle. Dodge the boomerang and keep your poke up. Run when you see the rage bar is nearly full or have a disengage ability at the ready.

Gnar's job in lane is to be an oppressive lane bully. His kit is practically made for it.

gnar has several longish cool downs and windows for counter play.

i like waiting till he is just about to come out of mega to engage on him. just lost all his awesome, has a speed penalty. great time to stick it to him.
