the not support list for this season.

when i go adc i expect a solid support choice. i do not want to see DrMundo KogMaw Olaf RekSai Teemo Pantheon Karthus Brand XinZhao Veigar Gragas Gnar Rumble Talon Gangplank Velkoz and lastly AnnieNasus . especially when Alistar Braum Soraka Sona Taric Leona Thresh are still on the board. my reason for putting teemo on the list is a an easy one. to this day every teemo support i get just builds ap and refuses to buy wards. they say shrooms are my wards. shrooms do not have a decent sight radius. as for annie same thing on the builds all the time. all ap and no wards. then annie just kills steals from me and says sorry. as well as gose in tank style and gets melted. then looks at me and asks were my damage was at level 3 lol. i forgot about the hecarim support i got too. other supports are perfectly fine selections as long as they are supports in primary or secondary role. id like to not have my lane lose hard as my laning opponents have an actual working setup. not getting a legit support style champion or getting pantheon support that dose not play like a support at all has cost me over 20 games this season.

Brand is a totally viable support. No other support, not even Annie or Sona, has a 2 second stun.

GroundRuleDouble1 votes

Agreed! Brand has a 2 second stun with more zoning power than just about everyone on that list.

I consistently get double kills whenever I do Brand support... his ult just works great against duos and his passive... wow, like, that's just a ton of free damage right there and it's great for raking in the gold with the AP support item to buy all those mana pots and 75g vision wards you're gonna buy to be economical so you can rush that liandrys you're gonna get later.

OP doesn't know Brand is actually an overpowered support 'cause he's Bronze V

Brand's stun requires comboing 2 abilities together though, in which case Leona can get a 2.75 second stun.

Brand's stun is also only single-target on a fairly slow-moving, minion-blocked projectile. And not one with a schoolbus-sized radius like Morganna's 2~3 second binding.

As single-target it's also not AoE, where someone like Annie can stun 5 enemies for 1.75 seconds, giving your team a massive 8.75 second advantage.

And as it requires 2 abilities to activate: Brand's stun doesn't cost any less than 120 mana, which is extreemly steep for something you can miss fairly easily, where even Blitzcrank's steep 100 mana grab is, well, only 100 mana.

I'm not seeing much in Brand being a totally viable support, all that champion really brings is tons of AoE damage: and ~eh damage if he doesn't have items. His %HP magic damage obviously prevents him from doing no AoE damage and his bases aren't terrible especially with max bounces, but he still mostly falls into the win lane or loose game selection of, well, champions that aren't good supports. Come late game in a team-fight with a typical support's income, chances are Brand wasn't able to fit much utility in his build, he's only packing damage, and his damage totally pales in comparison to what a solid Blitzcrank grab or Janna Tornado can do to a team fight.

You could do much worse than Brand, in yoloqueue he's certainly not a bad support pick - but you could also do substantially better.

The comboing 2 abilities is VERY easy. Morgana's isn't a stun. It's a snare...BIG difference. Brand has more zoning potential than Morgana, Leona, and Annie. Brand does more damage than Leona, Morgana, Annie, and Blitz.

This. This right here. This is why I don't want a Brand support on my team.

The entire goal of a support is playing smarter rather than harder, it's the lane position specifically focused on doing everything useful outside the realm of just bashing things over the head (or throwing fireworks at them). Setting up your team to knock your opponents down, giving them a solid serve that amplifies and multiplies their power, granting vision, peeling, counter-initiating, initiating, locking down: that's what the support position entails.

If you want to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentations of their women: play one of the 4 gold-intensive CS-intensive rolls capable of amassing the level of damage or defense necessary to overpower your opponents. Playing the lowest gold, abysmal CS position into such a play-pattern is killing your team's optimization.

And brand, isn't a smarter rather than harder champion. He's about overpowering and out-muscling.

Playing the support position with a focus on damage will generally lead to 1 of 2 outcomes for your team:

  1. You don't have gold late-game and fall off a cliff, becoming a 5th wheel.
  2. You accumulate a lot of wealth your allies where reliant on, forcing them to be pretty useless. If it was a marksman, completely useless.
GroundRuleDouble2 votes

I never said to focus on damage. Here's the problem with the mindset of most ADCs. "Don't play Brand...you deal too much damage." I got news for you. Damage leads to kills.

A few situations for you.

  1. I (as a support) stun the opponent and deal a little bit of damage. The ADC deals a lot of damage, but they survive.

  2. I (as a support) stun the opponent and deal a lot of damage. Now, when the ADC deals damage, they die. What's better?

  3. I (as a support) stun the opponent and deal a little bit of damage. The ADC deals a lot of damage, but they survive.

  4. I (as the support) stun the opponent, both me and the ADC deal damage, and I get the kill. What's better?

It's one thing if you play Brand and try to be an APC (building all AP). That's probably not right.

However, I play only Brand (for the most part). When I support, I support. I build sightstone. I focus on zoning, stunning, and slowing. But to say you don't want Brand as a support because he deals damage and you're afraid of him getting a kill or two...that's pathetic. If Brand happens to snowball and get fed as a support, who cares? A fed Brand is more dangerous than a fed ADC. But once again, that's not the point. The point is, sure there are some bad Brand supports, but there are also bad Leona supports, bad Thresh supports, and bad Sona supports.

The real topic of this post should be about HOW to play support, not WHO to play as support. It's about the play style, not about the champ.

Also:

granting vision, peeling, counter-initiating, initiating, locking down: that's what the support position entails.

Brand grants vision (builds sightstone) Brand peels (slow with Rylai's or stuns) Brand counter-initiates (one of the best in the game) Brand locks down (with Rylai's and stun)

No love for reverse-support Hecarim as he denies the enemy every cs by standing on them, then?

siilentdeath1 votes

i love how no one here is talking about how people take an APC in a support spot because they didnt want support. annie supports constantly kill steal from me. its not about too much damage as much as it is about how i need the gold being a marksman. when i have annie supports that steal my kills they just take the gold and buy more ap and 0 wards. if an annie support took 1 kill from me to go get a sight stone sooner than later id be ok with that. however all they do is BUY MORE AP AND NO SIGHT STONE!!

There's nothing wrong with Gragas support. He is pretty gold independent.

what are gragas support abilities to help his carry? xerath has a slow and stun he is more support than gragas. gragas has 1 stun. to be a viable support they should have 2 of the following a shield, heal, stun, slow, a buff of some sort or a grab. at least 2 of those to be damn good at being a support. 2 of the same effect qualifies. hell Caitlyn is more of a support than gragas. she has a stun and a slow.

BluePolarizer2 votes

an AOE stun, an AOE knockback, an AOE slow and being able to tank a fuck ton of skillshots with zero gold.

Also, you should realize that in high elo games, supports are not just for the ADC but for the whole team. That is why you see LCS and diamond players run Amumu or Kennen support despite them being terribad at actually peeling for the ADC, since they now have an initiator and opens up the jungle or top for either a damage dealer or another initiator.

amumu works great i just havent seen one support this season. only seen amumu maybe 6 times total. the 2 gragas supports i got this season were crap and did not ward enough. when i say enough i mean more than the 1 trinket ward they get for free

IcyPepper1 votes

Hah!

Seriously, they ward that little? I see tank junglers buying sightstone every once in awhile, and nearly all the time in LCS! Hell, I even buy sightstone on bruisers because vision is that awesome!

BluePolarizer2 votes

then that's an issue with the player. I can play Janna and go full AD while buying zero wards and stealing farm with my 50 AD steroid. Doesn't mean that Janna is a bad support.

GroundRuleDouble1 votes

This is the real point of this whole post. OP is blaming the crap supports on the champ selection, not the player. That's why this entire post is irrelevant.

people make it harder to climb out of bronze by making poor choices in selection. when im up against a jinx/sona lane and i get a shaco support that wont even ward or play the support role i have issues in lane.

your a bad support if u dont ward enough. as a support i always buy wards as it the supports 1st or 2nd primary function. i dont push past the river if my support dosent have more than 1 ward

I'm guessing you're one of those non-supports that don't ward and complain about the support for lack of vision.

i do play support and i do get a sightstone 1st

actually pinks on the tribush are supposed to come from the adc so the support pink can be used to clear enemy wards and provide better ward control... as adc you are supposed to buy that first pink on your first recall...

she was covered by "other supports would be just fine as long as it was the primary or the secondary role"

I dunno I like Annie Support. I never really 'kill steal' unless if I don't the ADC will die, or we're in a teamfight and when I help burst I accidentally kill a squishy. I roll Sightstone talisman and RoA with Zhonyas and am a running warding stunning bot who sets stuff up for people.

Well that's just stupid O_O

The only time I go full AP is when I'm duo-queuing bot lane with my friend and he asks me to for the extra damage.

Sniper 01 votes

Brand vel and annie shouldn't be on that list. Vel is more of a niche pick but he's definetly able to fill the role with his true damage allowing him not to have to necessarily build scaling early. Annie provides stuns and burst even with the lack of a massive number of scaling items. Brand does pretty much what annie does. Except it's harder to pull off and he can't stun in an aoe.

item 3070 Zilean item 3070

the worst thing is when they go bot, or they call duo and when you ask why none of them bought item 2049 he/they say "im not support"

Annie support is fine.
