Bias and frustration aside, why does Zed's passive work on minions?
This is the one thing I don't understand.

There are very, very few passives which don't work on minions.
The ones which don't tend to be super-duper specific and champion-centric, like Fiora's.
Because that's the whole point of the passive? so he can farm?
Assassin were theorically meant to be bullied by mages (the others common mid laners) during the laning phase. Therefore, and still theorically, lots of melee assassins designed for the mid lane have tools to help them farm more easily against their bully. That was how things were planned. For Zed, it is his passive.
Because he doesn't have poke and waveclear in order to lane against mages otherwise.
