So, how do you deal with Kog'Maw?

Niaphim··6 votes·1,221 views

He's become my personal ban until I figure our what to do vs him. I play support, primarily Sona. She can afford buying a Frozen Heart, but it seems to do nothing to his burst. Often paired with Lulu, on-hit build with runaans and fervor, he literally melts the entire team unless he is countered with equally broken burst (which is quite hard to achieve). So, any tips?

Edit: More precisely I have problems after the laning phase, in midgame+ when he has 2+ items.

  1. Beat him early, and close out the game before he hits three items.

  2. He's incredibly susceptible to cc and lockdown, and is extremely squishy. Depending on his lane partner, Sona may not be the best choice against him as she's equally squishy and doesn't fare as well in all-ins. Someone like Leona, Thresh, Nautilus, or even Braum (maybe especially Braum) does much better against him.

  3. If you're insistent on playing Sona into Kog'maw, then you have to use your poke against him effectively. There is nothing you can do to him mid- to late-game other than ult, so make your time count.

I usually beat or crush him in lane, even if he is with Lulu. Problems arise in the end of the laning phase when he hits his 2 item powerspike (or even 1.5). I'm trying to figure out counterplay as Sona, and it seems it is limited to a good (flash+)ult.

You bought frozen heart vs Kog. There's your problem. Most of his damage is actually magic damage, not physical. The attack speed slow is irrelevant on sona because you should never be in range for it to matter. Even if it would, it's a bad item to rush because it has zero health and you have one of the lowest hp pools in the game.

The simple solution to Kog'maw is to kill him. Yeah yeah it sounds simple. Seriously though, just burst his ass. He's extremely vulnerable to assassins and if he's drain tanking, he's incredibly immobile as he cannot attack move for shit when his W is up. Get a Morello/Ryalis (Heal debuff, HP + utility slow) instead of dumbass lichbane. In fact, he's so immobile regular mages, not just assassins, can 100-0 his ass with any combo as long as they don't completely whiff it.

I usually rush locket since his damage is indeed magic, and locket is a nice item to have vs Runaans. FH is usually my third or fourth item. I wasn't really sold on its effectiveness, will definitely consider what you said. Thank you.

I wouldn't say most of his damage is magic, it seems like it's 60-40 for physical

highly depends on the item built.

Other than don't get him fed (obviously) you can poke him out of lane early game. In the early game Kog is very weak and very vulnerable to poke. If you can poke him down and make cs'ing very difficult for him you can control him. As for building against him, late game he should do more magic damage then physical damage because of all the on hit items

Try not to engage/go near him after he has been attacking minions. That might be a no brainer, but both Fervor and item 3124 require them to have auto attacked something to charge it up, so there's a pretty significant damage difference between them when they've been idle for a while and when they've been attacking consistently.

Another idea might be save your move speed boost for when he activates your attack speed boost, running away from him and let it time out.

Fervor only stacks on champions btw.

Early game he is pretty weak so poke his ass out of lane. In the lategame, he must be stunned/killed asap. If possible (by that I mean there's no one else in front of him) flash and ult onto him. It's a game where your team must reach the kog'maw and their team needs to protect him. Don't dive too deep into him or you will get blocked by his team and kited. Wait out for the right moment. Let kog'maw come into his AA range first, then start diving. This is usually not the work of a sona, though, unless you can flash ult as mentioned before.

Personally if the enemy team picks Kogmaw and you can pick a champion to lane against him as support I would suggest Trundle pillar him when he is standing still to engage and it will disrupt his abilities.

Nautilus may be annoying early for Naut but around levels 4-5-6 the match up will get easier to deal with Kog as Naut can Q Kog into fights and with passive can stop his abilities.

Lulu Goes well against Kog early game mid game late game just a really good pick in my opinion.

Long story short just pick a champion that has an engage ability or something to get kog off the ground to disrupt him from standing still for too long.

he is sooooo easy to shutdown its not even funny.

bully him with caitlyn, ashe or lucian.

play supports like leona, nautilus Nami or blitzcrank

play assassins like zed, or cc mages like viktor

top laners like Trundle Yasuo darius malphite shen and maokai do well into him

junglers like gragas, ekko lee nidalee shit on him pretty hard

If you are playing Sona, you have to abuse your early game. Save your ult for when theres guaranteed follow up.

Kog is super weak to the weakest of slows or cc, and relies almost entirely on auto attack damage. If you can make him waste his W, he is useless for a couple of seconds.

You get an assassin to delete his ass, you cc him.

That's all you can do.

As a fellow Sona player, I find Kog very easy to poke in lane. Don't sit on top of him and casually all-in him, but you should be able to wear him down and bully him off of CS if you zone him well.

That said, you play more ranked than I do, so maybe I just face bad Kogs.

He's (probably) a bit over-tuned at the moment. But in general-

  1. OnHit defenses count double against Kog, abuse that fact.

  2. Because of how his W works, Kog is very vulnerable to disengage. If you can get him to pop W and back off, do it. Kog works best against all-ins.

  3. Because of his his W works, Kog is very vulnerable to CC. If you can make him waste his W, again, do it.

  4. Kog's ability to poke outside of his W-enhanced auto range is pretty limited since the remake. Champs that can poke him down and stroll away if Kog tries to fight back are great. If you can convince your ADC to run Varus against Kog, do it.

  5. Invest in a quality Knifecat.

Kog is pretty busted right now.

the only solution is to have a dive champion zone him when he pops W in a team fight. put someone on zoning duty who can instantly kill him.

Champs like Wukong, J4, diana, fizz, etc. all need to basically threaten kog and keep tabs on him in every fight. once he pops his W the assassin or diver needs to run right at him and force kog to either die for sure, stop attacking and run or try to turn on the assassin. if you do it right the person who is zoning should be able to get to kog before he can auto them in time. at least enough to kill them. this means a good flank.

if kog is not zoned well whoever he is autoing is going to die in about two seconds. if anyone else is near that champion they also die. up to 3 people can die in 2-3 seconds if you dont immediately zone him when he goes to W. your entire team has to threaten kog and play around his W. playing against kog is like playing against any other hyper carry. once they come out turn on them immediately. no hestation.

if you dont he cleans house.

Unlike other hyper carries though, his dps is absolutely insane. by far the most in the game so its very hard to zone him. if you do manage to get him to back off while his W is active he is now out of the fight for a solid 9 seconds or so as he has to wait for his W cooldown to do any damage. this is your time to destroy his team. and once he pops his W again turn on him.

the reason kog works so well in solo queue is because its hard to coordinate that. usually people get impatient, blow their shit on the front line and kog kills everyone. no one does zoning duty and kog kills everyone. or they focus kog for a bit, he backs off. then they forget about him altogether and he comes back and kills everyone.

you need to play around him or he'll win the game by himself.

If kog is picked early you can pick a ton of dive into him. Leona is great as a support. Or nautilus. once he stands in place with W, just ult him. he now has to run and stop attacking.

Easiest thing to do is ban him, he's been broken for a while just didn't have a pickrate until recently.

Sona is generally very squishy early on and one wrong move can cost you the lane. Certain champs are also countering others obviously. Kog is wide range glass canon. Sona lacks the range to safely poke him. If your team lacks a capable assassin to deal with him, chances are not on your side. As a counter build, i wouldnt suggest item 3110 , duo to his high attack speed and magic damage, armor and attack speed debuff doesnt do much. Id even say item 3190 could work better in protecting you and your team. He deals %hp of the enemy as damage, but extra hp is still a good option and also balanced stats of resistance and armor, for your own safety. Ofc thats hard to achieve as support and kinda pointless. Instead you should focus on utility and strengthen your own champion exploitable mechanics, in this case item 3174 works great.

CC and burst. You can't do it alone though, your team really has to focus the Kog. Chain CC and enough damage to take him from 100 to 0 before he can get his damage down. If you know Blitzcrank, one hook into combo+team likely does the trick if you can get him out of range of Lulu.

I play a lot of Soraka Kogmaw(as the Soraka) and there's some team comps that literally just cannot beat him, and some that we just could not beat. I think the last one was Naut Ashe Kha'zix Ekko or something, just a lot of dive and burst and CC so I couldn't stand next to Kog.

As a soloplayer? Just ban him. As a coordinated team? Either get a multi layerd engage(a single engage usually gets countered by disengage for his sup/jungle, you need atleast a second option to get ontop him, ideally with more than one guy), or with longranged poke as he lacks agressive mobillity or cc and has nothing but his ult to fllow up on his teams engage, or get a good disengage+reengage, go for the fight, disengage with the whole team once he uses W and instantly turn around again once his W wears off. Most kogs don't get any cdr which means his W downtime is quite a big window of opportunity.

Ofcause snowballing early vs him always is an option, just don't make the usuall mistake of thinking his early is weak, which hardly is the case for any champion. His early is vulnerable, meaning you can capitalize heavily on mistakes as his W for example has a long cd and he has little selfpeel, and without W he won't trade effecktively. But if you don't play around his weaknesses, he will be able to deal alot damage even early in the game.
