Would removing crit from Yasuo completely kill him? (Discussion)

Before I start, I have to say this. Yasuo is a very awkward champion with mixed feelings in the community, and "Mobility" is a cuss word on these forums. These are my opinions backed by what I think could be considered facts. If you're a numbers guy this isn't for you I didn't post any research. Feel free to post your opinion and keep an open mind!

Alot of people have said that Yasuo should get his crit removed and his Q and R should do more damage.

This would absolutely kill him, in my opinion.

Lets define two types of melee champions first;

The AD Caster: Someone who scales with AD and uses abilities to deal most of their damage. Ex, Zed, Jayce, etc

The AD Carry: Someone who uses autoattacks to deal most of their damage Example: Yasuo, Master Yi, etc

If Yasuo had no Crit and they buffed his abilities, his autoattacks would be pretty meaningless and he would need to become more reliant on his Q, which is his only AD ability in his basic kit. It is also counted as an autoattack and there are millions of ways to counterplay an autoattack such as Jax's E, thornmail, etc. That leaves him with his R (which his Q Needs to proc three times in order for him to land with some exceptions.) So far we have a champion who is only good at melee range, but can't be at melee range because of his lack of damage. If his Ult became his main damaging ability then he would essentially be a Zed/Katarina mix in the sense that, they rely on their ult to do anything and that is completely contradicting his purpose as a Melee ADC, who should have high sustaining damage. (His E is a poor excuse of a damaging ability)

Yasuo is also very squishy without tank items which is why they gave him that boost of 2x crit and a shield. He works as a champion who picks his battles, and when he picks the right ones will win more often than lose.

Heres what I think would happen if his Crit was removed but his damage was buffed

PROS: Stronger early game and strong laning phase He would have more diversity build-wise Less toxic to play against if fed

CONS: Would need a complete rework, not just damage buffs. No clear role for him. Very narrow team comp possibility, almost requiring knockups on team. His only purpose would be an extended knockup and meat to get chewed through while vayne pentas.

Something like this would NEED a major rework, not just a powershift.

Here's a little info about me so you don't need to look me up to use that as a defense to your case. My main champions in ranked: Azir, Velkoz, Yasuo I am Bronze 3 right now, was Silver last season. Trying to climb out. My average CS is around 60 at the 10 minute mark, which I know is mediocre at best. My mechanics are good but my common sense isn't, Sometimes I need to take a breather before leaving spawn.

Please feel free to leave your opinions below.

Honestly I think the crit passive holds him back from being a viable champion. I used to main Yasuo and while he carried me out of SIlver and early Gold, once players got good and learned the matchup, I couldn't win anymore with him. At Diamond elo, I rarely see him, and when I do, he's ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS feeding. Its almost impossible not to feed on Yasuo, as its super important to be ahead with him yet any small amount of jungle pressure pretty much takes you out of the game, and he's easily one of the most vulnerable to ganks champions in the game.

IMO they should just get rid of the crit passive, put AD scaling on his E instead of AP, and buff his ult / Q, while strengthening his shield a bit. I think before they nerfed his W's passive it used to have and the shield, he was in a good spot, but he got nerfed before people learned the matchup, and honestly I think he would have been sitting in a good spot as he was before. Now he's incredibly squishy and has trouble building his shield without the W passive.

Without a need for crit, his build could be more focused on life steal and defensive stats, which are actually what he needs to survive. Unfortunately with the crit passive, he's pretty much pigeon holed into his first 1-2 item choices. If he could rush, say, BoRK and then Bloodthirster, he'd have a much easier time I think. I really hope Riot does SOMETHING with him, because he's just not good in his current state, and I'd love to play him again and be competitively viable.

Additionally, if they maybe reworked his kit into being a jungler, I think he'd have a much better spot there than in lane. Simply letting him hold onto a whirlwind longer or building whirlwinds off of Q whiffs would help a ton. The only reason he can't jungle right now is because he can't hold onto tornadoes for ganks. Otherwise he'd be a great jungler.

I'd like to see him as a jungler that would be a good idea. Definitely agree he is pigeon hole'd into a build order which is one of the cons of his current state.

With a proper rework it would work, but a simple powershift can't help him. The AD on E would make sense.

Well thought out argument.

Yasuo's crit's aren't a problem for 2 reaons. Yasuo's early game is easy to exploit because of the nerf to his base HP, and unless yasuo buys crit as a starting item, he doesn't get any free crit. Second, Yasuo's crits don't do full damage, so even when he gets his crit he's not an issue.

Tryndamere is superior to Yasuo in every possible way. He gets free crit at level 1, and his crits do full damage. He also has a heal and is invincible for 5 seconds. Yes Yasuo is extremely strong when he gets his items, but he has weaknesses that are extremely easy to exploit. You and your should be more fed than him by the time he becomes relevant.

he obiously would suck if one just removes crit, but he would be in a nearly perfect spot if they just revert all the nerfs and remove the crit. With his old shielding power, he would turn into a interrupting bruiser, constant aoe-knockups(4sec cd if you don't miss a Q), the ult and hard to focus down due shield+mobillity, but therefor with not overbearing damage. If he still is a bit to weak without crit, one could add a bit more power into his AAs, like a passive effeckt on W so you won't get the aditional damage till later in the game, or a part of the ult armor pen passive, and maybe a higher ad-ratio on that 3ed Q to focus a bit more on building up the Q.

I just don't know where to begin with this line.

It's a little wordy :P It's a safe statement though lol

Personally I believe he shouldn't get a x2 crit passive, but perhaps gets a flat ammount added to his attacks to replace it as a compromise. Although I don't really have a major problem with Yasuo when I fight him, I don't play as him, and I don't mind if they keep him the same or change him. Its just my view and it has no merit.

Regardless of whether or not you feel his crit passive is balanced, the bottom line is that Yasuo can't be balanced as long as his kit remains the way it is. Right now he isn't the greatest champion but buff him (as we've seen in the past) and he flat-out breaks the game. When Yasuo is strong you feel helpless playing against him because there isn't much you can do to stop him.

I'd personally like to see a rework removing his crit passive and incorporating his unique flow mechanic to boost his other abilities.

if you take a look at yauso's kit its completly based around the fact of building crit on him, his tornado, q, and r all can crit...

only his Q...and even then it interacts like a basic attack. Yasuo's Q is basically just an on-attack attack modifier like Nasus' Q or Fizz's W. Heck, even the cooldown and cast point are reduced by bonus AS just like normal attacks. The bonus crit thing is just a thematic choice to fit the ronin theme. His actual kit is much more heavily revolving around outplaying and cleanup.

actually, in what way is crit related to ronin?!?

His kit is perfectly tied to a 'wind wandere' theme, only crit doesn't fit to that.

How many strikes does it take an expertly trained samurai to kill someone in the Eido Period? If you answered anything more than 1, Hollywood has won this fight. The katana was solely designed to kill a target from draw in one motion as quickly as possible. Parrying and guarding are a product of Hollywood. A critical strike is a strike that hits a critical area of the target. Thus, the samurai is more innately able to deal a critical wound than a normal warrior.

A samurai studies his enemie and waits for the right moment to deliver that one deadly strike, which is reflected by stacking up the Q and than getting massive damage from the knockup+ult. It's also about hitting the weak spot, which is reflected by the 50% bonus armor pen.

A sammurai doesn't rely on randomnes, but crit is random. Sure, once you gain 2-3 item(depending on runes), yasuo isn't longer random and one could interpret training and finially masterie into that, but one would think yasuo is already a fully skilled man of the sword when he joins the leauge, and most of all should have to train from the cratch every new game as if he had Alzheimer.

If skill shots could "headshot" like in FPS, then that would replace RPG-style crit chance. Instead, we have the binomial random variable of crit which, if you wanted to find a physical analogue, would be coming up short an inch and getting someone in the sternum instead of through the rib slits. I find the hatred for the "unrealism" in crit very odd.

Someone hits a bullseye 20% of the time and they say it's all skill and predetermined.

Someone crits in a game 20% of the time, and they say it's bullshit.

There's randomness in everything.

Yasuo is made with an assumption that his players will build crit on him if I am not wrong.

So taking out crit is like taking out Shen's HP stacking, you would just destroy him, unless you have a pretty good reason or have a solid compensation to follow it up with.

My thoughts in the matter:

I heard that he is a tough champion to learn (but I don't know this firsthand). He has quite a bit of crowd control in his kit. He doesn't use mana, so he only needs to leave lane to heal, shop, or gank. His wind wall could put ranged champions out of business during a team fight. He is often playing mid. Since mid is mostly used for ranged ap casters, the wall gives him a huge advantage. Ap casters tend to be fragile, so Yasuo almost always wins lane. His shield blocks any one attack every 20 or so seconds. This includes ultimates and ignite. He is insanely deadly late game, as he can kill any fragile opponent in a snap.

This champion is overpowered, but the kit design makes it hard to nerf him the right amount. I'm sure riot spent a lot of time pondering the potential nerfs.

I think the crit chance should be multiplied by 1.5, and slightly increase his base damage values. He will still be powerful, but not obnoxious.

I honestly find yasuo to be one of the healthiest champs in the game at the moment. He is weak if you aren't good at him, but when you get good at him he is still a strong pick. I think he could be tweaked slightly, but his kit remains one of the coolest ones in the game and should remain the way it is.
