Zyra in mid lane. (Opens store) recommended item is spelltheif. How did zyra became a support? She has no ally buffing abilities, only cc and damage. Same problem with other mama mages. I only see them on support role nowadays.

Riot's 'champion and role diversity' in a nutshell. Let certain champs steamroll for seasons on end to the point where it forces traditional mid-laners to go to other lanes and even have recommended items to match.

Support roll doesn't require support effects. It requires the ability to be effective with minimal gold.
Zyra and Vel'Koz can both do this as well as be effective early game. Zyra has strong zoning power and Vel has great poke.
That said I enjoy Mid Zyra much more than Support Zyra.
Although I do enjoy mage supports. Heimer is amusing as hell vs a melee heavy team.
