Autofill and Support - Necessary for the game or failure of a role?

People typically don't want to play support. There are exceptions but it feels like most people that are support tend to be autofilled. Most of my games, ranked or normal, tend to have at least one player asking to play another role. Is this a necessary mechanic or a failure to make all roles equal in power level and enjoyable? Thoughts?

Edit

We can talk about what role currently least favored all day but that isn't necessarily the point of the thread, although the idea is welcome to be discussed. Since there has to be an autofill feature, this would indicate that some roles are simply not preferential at some point in time for xyz reason. The topic is - is this something that is necessary in a MOBA or is it indicative of something flawed with the game, role/champion balancing, etc.

I get autofilled into jungle more than I do support. What does that say about the failure of a role?

people that don't want to play support still dunno that support is the strongest role in the game and has been decidedly so for at least 3 seasons. also, most fills wanting to swap are from adc or jungle for my bracket.

Lately that autofill role has been jungle. And most recently: adc.

I mean, some playmaking supports get strong, or mages come bot and are able to be playmakers themselves, everyone (most especially ADCs) want them nerfed because they ADC can't be the one in the spotlight.

Seeing players quit, int or simply AFK if they can't be the one that carries instead of letting themselves be carried is the reason why not many want to play support, they aren't the carry.

"If I can't carry, there's no point in trying" - a random Kai'sa a couple weeks ago (no need to mention that we lost, as she and her duo just stopped trying to help the team, never stood with us, made it impossible to win because she couldn't carry)

The scoreboard is more important than the result of the match for most players.

Autofill needs to go HARD. It is 50% of what is wrong with Ranked games.

People don't like supporting because most people prefer to be the "protagonist" of the story instead of a supporting character. People want the spotlight instead of giving the spotlight to others.
