As a support main, i've been contemplating buying control wards even with a sightstone because my sightstone tends to run out of charges after deep warding and when the river wards expire and its given the enemy a game-winning ganks sometimes. Even if it doesn't save gold should I buy control wards for the whole laning phase?

So long as you have an inventory slot and gold available, you should be buying Control Wards.

The reason I ask is because some guide I read said not to for saving gold, I suppose that's outdated though being from sometime between s3-s4

in season 3, your entire build was wards and in Season 4, you still were to get Vision wards , even moreso now since it is 1 per player. Must be a troll guide by some troll "support" player.
dim2a1 votesAs a support, if you do not have a control ward on map, you should always buy one next time you back with a few exceptions (exceptions are: completing a key item such as sighstone, upgraded sup item, full item; sometimes 2 buscuits early game; late game when you do not have room).
Same goes for other roles too, but exceptions there can be more numerous.
