I'm kinda new to the game and I noticed Kindred's ult saves those within its range from death... But Kindred are harbingers of death? It just confuses me. It doesn't really thematically fit them in my opinion.

So their ult is what happens when they decide not to do that.
I compare it to the old story plot where the Grim Reaper for whatever reason stops reaping, and suddenly nobody on Earth will die anymore
