Can We Have East Coast Servers* Already?

*LAN Doesn't Count

Video followup to both my last thread on here: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/urjE66L8-are-east-coast-players-supposed-to-migrate-to-lan

And my Reddit post: http://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/2q7ise/are_east_coast_players_supposed_to_migrate_to_lan/

I've found the solution to the East Coast latency problem: We need to ask Riot Games to move their servers south.

This will be another huge thread with many upvotes that gets no response from Riot

I'm genuinely curious as to what these "network engineers" did today.

Like, seriously. I'd love for one of them to come in here and just tell us what they did at work today.

All the pros live in CA. If east coast players were to have good ping it would expose that all the pros are actually noobs that get carried by their internet connection./conspiracy

In Patrick's voice: "Why dont we just take Riot's NA Servers, and push them over there" points to the middle of North America

The average ping in bronze is 98, and the average ping in diamond is 64. http://www.elophant.com/league-of-legends/charts/tier?region=na&period=week

Pretty disgusting if you ask me.

Riot can't fix ping from the east coast. There is NO way they could eliminate all the hops except... by building a server on the EAST COAST. Short of running a single fiber optic line from each person's house directly to the server on the west coast there is no way they are going to narrow the gap enough from 100+ms to 30. Telling us they're working on fixing the ping is blowing smoke up our asses to make it look like they're doing something. Just build the damn server. Spend the money and do it, don't talk about it.

dammit, somebody let an eastie get on the forums. I thought riot made sure that couldent happen.

In all seriousness though, i lived through horrible ping before i upgraded my pc, and i feel you guys. While i don't like the idea of seperating america in two, if it means that half of the country gets decent ping, i'm all for it.

I have to echo the sentiment of others in this thread. NA ping for everyone except the west coast seems to be getting worse, not better. As a company, Riot has consistently said it is working with ISPs to get a better flow for their traffic but the actuality is that the opposite seems to be occurring for many of us. I am still baffled about why Riot refuses to even entertain the idea of East Coast servers or to give an actually legitimate answer on why they are not going to add east coast servers. The only possible thing for us to think is that a majority of the concern at Riot is around the main server location and focusing on LCS and Challenger teams. (If someone at Riot can point me to a legitimate coherent reason aside from "we'd like the region to be united" or some other generic vaguery, please do so). The difference in ping is noticeable. Many of us play with 70-90 ping constantly, and when you watch the pros when they get that high they says its massive. Not only is the increasing ping effecting average players, but it is preventing new young teams to enter the challenger scene and seriously compete because in order to be serious you must leave everything behind wherever you are and gamble on moving to the west coast and hopefully making it. This is supremely unfair and puts a huge burden on those who don't have access to the funds to be able to make that move to pursue their dreams. Riot, it's time to face the facts that whatever you are attempting with the ISPs is failing and that the best solution for the players, both average and potentially competitive, is to create an East Coast region for NA. The player experience should be first and foremost, so make it better and add the servers you know you will eventually have to add anyway. I am prepared for more vagery, but let's be honest, you have no plans to address it and will stand by and continue to talk about player experience while the ping for a majority of players continues to go up and up until it becomes unplayable. Maybe that's what DOTA 2, HotS, and Strife need to see an influx of players; Riot's ineptitude for basic server support. (PS all of these have East Coast servers, Dawngate has/had east coast, most PC games have east coast, so you are entirely out of touch and out of step with the general consensus of the gaming industry without a legitimate reason to do so. Being innovative is one thing, but outright refusal to use established norms that help increase the happiness of players and therefore revenue makes no sense in any possible interpretation.

Dakmaster12/31/2014, 7:07:06 AM3 votes

I've gone through all these solutions the support team has given me and nothing has worked. Only to find out it isn't my computers fault and it's theirs. Honestly, 2012? Not done? 1 billion dollars? Please, they "care" so much about the player experience.

MagicGALAXY1/1/2015, 6:19:49 AM3 votes

It's true that Riot has done nothing, as much as we know, for the East Coast Servers and I can't say I understand what EC Players are going through, but I feel like beating Riot to death, calling them selfish idiots, and say they better change it or else is a little harsh. I would be frustrated too if the ping sucked so much, but Riot probably doesn't like how they are being treated.

I also want to add that Riot SHOULD be responding to everyone about their issues and not ignore constructive criticism. That's different, but calling them retards and expecting a reaction if wrongfully played. Another thing is that not all of Riot games works on the servers, hell maybe fewer compared to other teams, which isn't good at all. I am pretty sure Phreak isn't working on the servers because, well that isn't his profession "Pantheon insert Pantheon joke here __________". You can't assume that everyone is working on it and you shouldn't call all of them dumb, but that doesn't mean that Riot shouldn't get more people working on that.

Riot, please give us something to work with. Give us details, not a blunt "We are working on it" because, in case you didn't notice, there are many pissed off League players right now that need some frost "Sejuani insert Sejuani pun here ______"

Zencharm12/31/2014, 2:05:44 PM3 votes

No, this idea would not be ideal, because people have friends who live on the East Coast, who wouldn't be able to play matches with them, unless they joined the East Coast server. Downvote me however much you want, but I have friends in South Carolina, who I wouldn't be able to play with. Plus, the people who are complaining probably live in New York anyway.

Its kind of funny that my connction to the na servers is around 100-120 and when i connect to euw the servers give me ping of 110-130.

Only Play Nid12/31/2014, 6:10:03 AM2 votes

I´ve played this game for years, and to be entirely honest, at this point I wouldn´t recommend it to a single person. This game has just got so incredibly terrible at ¨being all about the community¨ that it is actually not even a joke anymore. We were promised so many things that RIOT went back on. Things got more expensive, and the revenue went towards stupid shit, which ended up working WORSE than before. I don´t know how many times I´ve made this comment, but RIOT, if you want to be the big time E-Sport, you better start catering to your players, because you may think you´re some kind of amazing new game, but fuck us over, and we will leave, and you will be nothing. WE are your revenue, WE are what the product is sold to, WE are the players. Without us, you get nothing, you have nothing, and you are nothing. End of rant.

Droogzy12/31/2014, 4:45:50 AM2 votes

I just don't understand the justification of they don't want to cut the population in half for competitive gaming.

What?

You also want to be recognized for pro gaming/pro sports.

Pro sports do exactly that...

I pretty much haven't been able to play this fcking game properly with my friends having 1000 ping and me just lagging every 2 god dmn fcking seconds. I'm PISSED OFF. Seriously. Riot, you need to stop fcking talking about dumb skin concepts you have in these boards and actually do something.

blujadajhdja12/31/2014, 7:06:10 PM2 votes

Un-fucking-believable... I'm not very well informed, but they seriously moved servers to Oregon? I can't even wrap my brain around this, what the actual fuck?

Fiorinol1/1/2015, 12:20:48 AM2 votes

I've got someone telling me to off myself.

I've also got a bunch of people calling me an "entitled manbaby", and a bunch of other insults. I'm also being accused of "wanting publicity" when I have a channel with one video on it and no ads; I never asked for this to reach 85k views. Meanwhile almost everyone on here has been super reasonable. Thanks guys, you're great!

I don't understand where the gaming community went wrong on this one. Now when you complain about actual issues pertaining to a gaming product, you get told that you're too entitled by both gamers and game journalists.

Riot is failing to uphold BASIC industry standards because from what I see, they absolutely want to keep the servers as far as possible from potential customers; so they would rather point at ISPs for their problems since it's inconvenient for them.

Sorry, I'm being swamped right now, it's not that I want to ignore you guys, I'll be trying to answer some posts on here later.

We should get working servers first before making new ones

Was willing to skim till i seen " YOUR REDDIT POST"

All credibility as a human being goes out the window. Its nothing but a more sophisticated group of 4channers looking for CP and being counter productive.

I suppose the only was to contact anyone with power at riot, they are busy playing pocket pool on REDDIT. Still puzzles me how more info about league gets posted their vs the sites they pay for..... Pretty hypercritical

As a Network Engineer, I can assure you that there's far more to this than just slapping a server down on the East Coast. Do some research on this topic about what it actually costs and takes to get servers up and running. That's hundreds of man hours setting up each server, and knowing exactly how many servers you truly need without overspending or underspending.

So let's just say that Riot throws down some servers on the East Coast to meet the demands of all these people complaining about it. Well, they misjudged the amount of traffic they get on a regular basis due to the lack of research and study and BAM, server goes down. Everybody is locked out, or people are constantly sitting in queue waiting to just get logged in, let alone play a game. But this is what everybody wanted, an East Coast server that you can't access when you want to. You will get your 40 ping, if you manage to get on. This is one factor of thousands that people need to focus on and work out before they just throw some shit on the East Coast. Just imagine sitting in the same queue we all do after a big update every single day you wanted to play. Having that East coast server would be irrelevant and people would move back to the West coast server just so they could play. Idk, it makes sense to me because this is my area of work, but to most people it seems more cut and dry.

xLegendary Troll1/1/2015, 5:28:48 PM1 votes

Hello everyone! I have a serious question for you. Before I ask, I'm from the east coast and my ping is usually 150. In LAN it's 30. The game plays completely different.

How can Riot profit from giving you this service? It's not like the game is unplayable. Why should they invest $$$ on building servers and go through the hell of maintaining them just so you can enjoy 30 ping? Are people NOT playing this game because of its ping?

If you can come up with a decent answer, then please let me know. Instead of whining and complaining, let's put our heads together and figure out how they can monetize from these servers. Otherwise, they're unnecessary.

Seriously. We should en masse move to LAN and refuse to speak Spanish. Eventually the player experience will be so bad for everybody because we won't be able to communicate well that they'll have to make actual East Coast Servers. Washington DC sounds like a good location.

Furthermore, I find their excuse for why they won't do it absurd. We all know it's about the cost, but they toss us the reason that they don't want to split up the playerbase.

That would be fine, if you had no choice which server you played on. If I'm perfectly content playing at a massive disadvantage, I don't need to transfer to the new servers and I'm not split from my friends. If I'm not an idiot, however, I get to enjoy my game on even (or near even) footing as the rest of the players.
