Someone explain to me this mechanic

Why is it when I ult as J4 and the enemy flashes right before I land, I don't deal damage, but when I ult as rengar my damage applies before I land on them. Had a couple of cases where the enemy flashes away when I was mid leap, but they still died ~500 distance away from me after I landed without any attack animation.

Think its J4 targets someone then start the animation on the spot the target was when he started the animation. When the animation ends he deals damage to all the enemys in the area. Rengar leaps, his leap is counted as an autoattack that cant be cancelled. If the animation started it will end and deal damage to the enemy he targeted.
