The state of top in soloqueue

So, lately i was wondering what is the "value" of toplane. For example, when bot is lost, so the enemy adc (probably tristana) has more farm, more kills, simply more gold than ours. Then they have an incredible power, because adc's are a lot more dominant than other roles. Plus, they have dragon control, and probably they can spread their pressure out to even midlane, and so on and so forth. But if toplane is losing at the moment, nothing is at risk. It's not a huge drawback when your toplaner dies, because it's not that big of a loss as a midlaner or an adc. As a toplaner myself, giving one or two kills to the enemy laner means nothing if he/she isnt some extremely snowbally champion. (for example irelia, darius or riven) Every single lane has a big impact when given the right amount of xp or gold, except toplane. A fed adc can carry the whole game. A fed apc has incredible teamfight presence. However, a fed tank or fighter usually gets kited or just outranged. Most of these problems are found in items and imbalanced champions, but it just bugs me that i usually win my lane, i come down to mid to have some skirmishes or teamfights, and i'm barely worth as much as our midlaner who had a fine lane, but still has less farm than me. Riot stated in patch 4.7 that toplane is like an island, it has no noticable impact on the game, and since then, (if we dont count the jarvan changes that patch) They didnt change anything about toplane. Maybe except nerf some overpowered champions. I'm slightly disappointed that there is actually a good idea to change the feeling of the game, and riot puts it in the "not important and never will be" box. item 3070 item 3070 item 3070 item 3070 item 3070

My suggestion to you is that if your going to play top in solo queue start playing more damage oriented top laners like riven, irelia, jax, akali, kass, gragas, etc.

While playing a tank is helpful for your team, it puts the game more in their hands rather than yours. For summoners unless you're in a super favorable match up that you know you can net 3+ kills just always take teleport and flash/ghost.

Farm it out until 6 and make sure when you get around level 6 that you notify your hot lane that you're looking for a teleport opportunity. Don't waste teleport getting back to lane unless it's a huge wave you'll miss. If you want to carry for top you have to be willing to make plays with teleport, after you TP bottom always get dragon with your bot lane and ping your jungler over as well.

Once you get going through teleport plays or pressure just split push and focus on getting turrets and soaking up waves. Typically when I see successful top laners they are tied or have the most CS on the game.

For the games that you take ignite over teleport, after you stomp your lane break the turret and roam mid and accelerate the game out of laning phase. Before your opponent can catch back up to you. You'll feel a lot more useful and it won't feel like a pointless role.

Or you could bring Taric to Top Lane and beat the AD Top Lane Champions to death and beyond.

A fed top lane is what is known as a Catch 22.

Oh my, this fed Renekton just dove right into our team, should we focus him (this could take a while) or should we let him wail on us and probably walk away from this team fight with a triple kill while we try to focus on the under fed carries hanging back throwing damage at us?

Focus Renekton, duh.

Congrats, Renekton takes out one of your carries, your front line gets dropped and now it's a 4v2 and your team is running.

take (and use) teleport; game changed

Top lane should not be forced to take a specific summoner spell just to have an impact. Obviously you dont 100% have to have tp but other lanes have more freedom in their choices while still being equally useful.

Unfortunately i think the only way to not require tp would be to physically change the map so there is some reason to care about top before 20 min.

summoner 11 Junglers don't have any choice here. It makes sense that you have to change up your summoner spells to fit your role in the game.

You CAN indeed go smiteless (and somewhat screw up whatever the enemy team expected your team to be like), it's just you have to have either insane clear time or spend the entire time ganking lanes, or both (Shaco, anyone?)

Jesus is Savior4 votes

and then the enemy team gets every dragon and baron

Sire Hippington2 votes

unless u kill them bfor doing so... honestly, only in ~10% of the dragons/barons it comes to smite-duels, the other 90% are clean takes with no enemy jungler around, either cause he's dead, or zoned away or u were fast and sneaky.

Sire Hippington1 votes

in 5v5, but in soloQ u often have no ward to port in, or ur lanes a permanently pushing to the tower and then feed into ganks, or ur allys ignore ur ping+port and run away with >50%health, leaving u in a 1v2 or 1v3 and flame for feeding... or ur enemys notice the TP and disengage, makeing u waste a summoner and if u didn'T cancle in time u also loose out alot farm and exp while giving ur opponent freefarm and towerdamage....soloQ doesn't work to well with TP.

As a top laner, I relax and watch the 4v4 that is League of Legends.

Top lane is a lonely lane. It's just you farming until late game generally.

Or generally it's this situation.

-Top lane against enemy toplane. Entire enemy team and friendly team is in mid lane 4v4'ing. My team is loosing. I know i could turn the fight around if i leave lane to go help, but so does my enemy laner so they push the lane so hard i have to choose between helping team or loosing tower. And in the end the result usually is

"omg toplane why no help"-

Lol this is so true.

As a Renekton main, I run into this issue a lot. It doesn't matter if I stomp my lane, kill them 4 times, and double their CS. It only seems to matter who's adc or assassin gets fed.

Yeah yeah, carries are supposed to carry, its why they're called carries right? But it's to the point that top lane doesn't matter. If you stomp and try to roam, your opponent just keeps pushing, so the best thing to do is keep pushing back. In essence, its no fun. Unless you're playing a carry top, you are basically just a meat shield.

Fighters have always tended to fall off late game, but right now the falloff happens hard and fast. Carries get their power sooner with the attack speed item changes.

My suggestion: Nerf Last Whisper

Ale non è male2 votes

Well, Renek is meant to fall of mid to late game, if after stomping your lane you haven't gotten a relevant advantage but you have just barely destroyed their outer tower is logical you are going to have little weight in the destiny of a game

And Last Whisper is the last of the problem for fighters, way less than IE or BoTRK (or even Mercurial)

Lunar Lightning1 votes

honestly nerfing last whisper would make a lot of the melee carries weaker too, i dont think thats the route to take. randuins thormail is still a really strong combo (not on rene) and can shut down a fed adc...you can also play something like riven or trynd they fair pretty well vs fed adcs

Long Dong Wukong3 votes

Top sucks, honestly. By far the least impactful role on the map. You can stomp your lane but you're so far away you can't easily distribute the power.

And when you leave after stomping, it's so far away that the other person gets to catch back up pretty easily, so you're stuck in the lane.

Lane just sucks.

Hyper tanks are prevalent in LCS/Worlds because they revolve around being able to team fights and scale into the mid/late game. It doesn't matter how tanky you are if your adc has one item compared to their Lucian who has 3,there will be absolutely nothing you can do to win the game for your team.

Solo queue and the pro scene are completely different. Solo queue focuses more on the first 15 minutes of the game to obtain leads and keep them. The key to success in solo queue is damage, damage, and damage. You know why zed, talon, fizz, akali are all so popular? It's because as long as you have an assassin on your team it doesn't matter if Lucian has 2 items or 6, you can one shot him and turn the team fight into a 4v5.

I play damage tops because it allows me to make up for my crappy bot lane that got crushed and has no items or the mid lane that fell behind 60 cs and lost control of the game.

Unless you're playing ranked 5 do yourself a favor and put someone that snowballs or does a lot of damage in the top lane.

deadlychuck2 votes

This is exactly why pseudo-assassin top lane champions are so popular, they have massive levels of mobility with high burst. The reason is that they can't be kited.

If nothing else, i'd blame mobility creep on limiting the viable options for top lane champion picks. A hand full of top laners got very mobile until they were pick or ban, then ADCs were adjusted to have a chance to kite them if given a good support. Then most of the tanks or slow bruisers got left behind and are absolutely worthless in most games. It just comes down to the idea that riot didn't associate enough value with mobility when they were designing their new champions.

Toa of Death2 votes

As a fellow Top Laner, I agree with this. I hate getting fed and winning my lane while bot/mid just feeds the hell out of their opponents. What good are MR and Armour items if the enemy ADC/APC can melt my HP in just 3-4 hits. Quite a few Top Lane champions need a VU/Rework and so far all we've gotten is Sion and he isn't even that good in Top Lane.

LetsDineTogether2 votes

Sorry to tell you, but Mages are the dominant species in YoloQ. Swain Katarina are proof of this. They can roam, and kill everything while bursting the adc to death. ADC's are incredibly strong in 5v5 though.

Bauerbach1 votes

I play ashe top (I dont volunteer for top though). pretty simple... I am hard to pin down with slows and a stun, I can play it safe and range farm creeps, I can bring the pain if they are just plain bad, and the opponent generally assumes Im a complete noob idiot that jungle ignores.

meanwhile, 20minutes in, Im sitting on statikk and IE, and uhoh, they have a tank that you dont focus, and we have 2 ADCs that are mowing them down.

it doesnt always work of course... sometimes their jungle makes life miserable, or they have a good gap closing hero on top that harasses to death. but nothing works all the time. When you have a marksman on top, every second that ticks by increases the chance of victory.

TenSlashTen1 votes

gut LW, there top lane is useful again.

1337n00bh4x0r1 votes

Where... is your jungler? If you've got top pushed out from blue side, you own their red. You can then ward it to stop their mid from ganking you, so you're free to push top all you want and your jungler can come steal their red and they can't do anything about it. If you're purple and winning hard from top, it's even better, as blue control can hurt their jungler / midlaner and you get lategame baron vision. You can, as others have said, push up your lane and teleport out if you prefer that.

Having control of the top half of the map is very important. Take their golems/wraith. Ward their jungle and kill their jungler. Roam to their mid. Toplane, as any other lane, doesn't stop at the wall and the river.

Lunar Lightning1 votes

2 things one play a carry with ignite in top and split push the entire game if your team is losing bot, or 2 take tp and play something tanky that u can use to shut down a fed botlane with a tp

AFK Push1 votes

Ah toplane my favorite lane or as I call it the island. There are some games where you and the enemy laner go even for the first 15-20 minutes with no jungler involvement, which is depressing especially if a roam mid just can't happen at the time. Then there are the times where you are pushed so far into tower against somebody you can't afford to back, because that tower is gone.

Of course, since this is an island you are held responsible for surviving on it. Try to snowball or take tower early than you can make pressure mid. Also, teleport really helps if you need to make some plays and your lane is going nowhere.

Remlap12231 votes

Honestly, top lane really is insignificant. It's a farm bot lane, which is why I like playing Vayne and Quinn top, because they can go snowbally hard without worrying about not contributing to the team. Vayne shreds tanks, and Quinn roams mid and gives (or takes) mid laners kills. Even if I accidently kill a laner when Ulting as Quinn, it doesn't really matter too much because regardless of who got the kill mid gets free farm and a turrent, and I get another kill or assist and the game shifts in our favor. That's why Ryze and Jax were so popular top because of the hyperscaling they could do. But you can still be meaningful if you're playing someone like Volibear. Just take teleport and ask bot lane to ward the enemy team's brush. When bot extends, TP in and go HAM. Get dragon, be meaningful. Obviously you'll lose the ignite advantage, but unless they're playing a super snowbally top, it shouldn't be an issue. The only champ top lane I'd get ignite over teleport is Quinn, and that's because her roaming and backdooring potential is already ridic.

There are a couple of top picks that can be used, which while not LCS meta, can contribute as much as a fed ADC or assassin while holding top. One is singed, he can push the wave and gank another lane easily, works even better once you either take or lose a tower or 2 as you can clear a couple waves before having to go back. His high MS lets him roam into jungle and mid as well.

Another good pick is vayne/cait, can hold off gap closing melee and are terrors late game.

You can also go heimerdinger top and get double kills when the jungler comes to gank as you siege down the turret (he is a beast top against most of the popular picks including ryze, but zed destroys him). Late game heimer also doubles as carry defense with his turrets and stun, and I would put him as the best at defending carries from bruisers and assassins (but not other mages) as the turrets kill bruisers before they can do much, and the same for assassins if heimer lands his stun.

Ryze is pretty self explanatory top, same as nasus and Jax for effect upon the game.

Champs like garen, darius, nunu and renekthon are snowball champs and can be noob traps as well (while still being good picks). I call these guys noob traps because they can get good KDAs while still not offering much to the team. Just winning their lane won't do much for the team late game if the other lanes are falling behind since they don't scale. They need to dominate (ie roam and take towers early to snowball their other lanes) Alot of ranked players won't pick up on that and will blame their teams on losses thinking they carried when in truth all they did was not lose their lane.

The top lane itself is not the issue, its the champions that people play in that lane. Generally, champions who are tanky are chosen up there because of what the meta is. the apc and adc can snowball because that is their ROLE, that is what they are meant to do. tanks are meant to peel and take the damage, not hard carry the game. its not that you don't HAVE an impact, you impact the game in a DIFFERENT way.

Sire Hippington1 votes

U got some point here, prettymuch all depends on how the carrys are doing, and mid+jungle can impact bot way more than top can. If ur carry got a lead or is even, then Toplane does matter and u can kinda carry, but if ur carry is to far behind, or the enemy carry is to far ahead, then it matters little how u perform top. Hiwever, i feel that isn't to much a problem of top lacking impact, but off carrys having to much impact.

JoDari1 votes

I'm not seeing it. Yesterday I played a couple of games. One where I lost top lane to an enemy Gnar, and our bot lane dominated their bot lane. Around 20 minutes our gold was tied, because their top and our bot did so well.

We lost that game pretty horribly.

Then another game where our ADC lost so bad as to be insignificant. But our top lane Irelia carried the game hard and we won.
