The Melee Adc

It's getting really old playing with people who don't understand assassins whatsoever.

I have been on both sides of the equation MANY TIMES, playing the assassin myself with teammates who don't know how to synergize with them and playing against one and my team refusing to attempt counter play, so please don't pull the "You don't understand this concept either."

To start, let's just give a quick overview and explanation of an assassin.

An Assassin is a champion who excels at dealing incredible DPS, some of them to often 1 champion but also many who can utterly slaughter the enemy team. In addition, their kit includes 1 or more means of survivability for both dueling scenarios or when partaking in TEAMfights.

Now this is where people start getting confused. "So there's just no weakness to Assassins is there?!" The answer is no, there is a common weakness to them, just like every other champion type.

1). Squishiness.

If you haven't noticed, AD Carries tend to build nothing but damage, making them very very easy to kill, but also allowing them to do very good damage to others. the MAJORITY of assassins are no exception. Squishy.

  1. Range

Included in the issue of having low health and defensive stats, most of the champions i am referring to are MELEE. In order to do this ludicrous damage they have to be in the targets face, or else they are wasting damage potential.

  1. Survivability.

Understand that just because the champion has something to keep them alive doesn't mean there is no way of dealing with it. A few examples:

MasterYi W can be canceled by disrupts, as with his ultimate, which only grants immunity to slows.

Katarina try and keep vision on her for teamfights and make sure if you have a stun, use it when she casts her ult or silence her when she uses her E to close the gap to the fight.

Akali No exception to the previous 2. use cc to delay burst so your team can either kill her or deal enough damage to where it is foolish for her to stay. also carry a pink ward for her w.

Talon Same concept as Akali. Pink wards and cc. hes still squishy.

Zed His kill and outplay potential is lowered drastically without his ultimate. Use items like zhonyasitem 3157 , QSSitem 3140 , any form of shield, to negate the damage from his ultimate and it means not only is that 120/100/80 CD ability now on CD, he most likely did not trade a kill for it. Therefore, play more aggressive knowing this and push for objectives. In addition, assuming the player is not that practiced at using every ability in under 2 seconds, a tank should be able to peal for his carry and even result in a kill.

These are just a few champions i enjoy playing that fall under this category. Again the point of this section is to exploit the weakness and counter play for each champion, although not every method is listed.

Now the information given is not just useful for counter play, it is also valuable information for the team with the assassin. By knowing how an assassin is played and the weaknesses of said champion they can play accordingly, function in fights better, make objective decisions, snowball lanes early, etc.

Therefore the success of an Assassin all comes down to the skill and knowledge of the 10 players on the map. Not just that specific player.

The most recent example I can give of this is a recent master yi game i played. My team had almost no cc, meaning no ways of keeping targets suppressed for me to do damage. At that point I have 2 options:

  1. Splitpush
  2. Obtain Korean level reflexes to dodge cc within that game
  3. Cry harder

Split pushing was not an option. My team refused to not follow through on fights 4v5 while I was elsewhere, making our early and mid game lead non existent. After them flaming me because I wasn't completely destroying fights, i made 3 attempts at fighting, all of which were unsuccessful. If I were to wait for the fight to progress and the enemy to blow cc, my team would be dead. If I went in, i might delete 1 person before dying myself.

What is the moral of this rather all over the place discussion? The LOL community needs to be educated on all champion roles, not just assassins. This includes working together in champion select so that the team can accomplish necessary tasks as efficiently as possible. Also understand how to both counter play this role, as well as compliment it in order to use the full potential of its use.

I could be wrong though, maybe every player in the world who enjoys champions like this needs to just be faker.

Thanks NA,

Baunjo

(P.S. the title should be the assassin not melee adc it wont let me change :/ P.P.S do not bother commenting your thoughts if you plan to just try and correct me on in game terms and the exact definition of the concept or until youve read the entire passage.

There are very few melee adcs in this game. Here they are: MasterYi Tryndamere Yasuo guess we should count Fiora too :/ grumbles affirmative action Anyone can play them. The End.

Riven

Not the most carry of carries, but OK.

Gangplank

Bruiser.

LeeSin

Lee Sin doesn't really fit into any role, so sure.

Rengar

Jax

Bruiser leaning towards DPS.

Jayce

Not melee.

Kayle

Not Melee.

Jayce Kayle are occasionally Melee

Rengar Riven there are a few high elo streamers that do this from time to time, playing one of these two bot lane with a support

Gangplank it's rare but gangplank ADC has been a thing for a while, you build him all crit with lucidity boots and Q chunks people like crazy

LeeSin played more as a kill lane, you need to play differently around team fights but it can and does work

Jax This guy would probably have a tough laning phase even with a support but he can absolutely fill the melee ADC role

Poppy forgot poppy, the ult makes this a possibility

Jayce Kayle are occasionally Melee

And usually are ranged.

Never seen it before in my life.

Yeah. He also dies like crazy.

LeeSin played more as a kill lane, you need to play differently around team fights but it can and does work

:V Lee Win.

Jax This guy would probably have a tough laning phase even with a support but he can absolutely fill the melee ADC role

I'd call Counter Strike and Grandmaster's Might tools that don't fit well, but I guess.

Poppy forgot poppy, the ult makes this a possibility

Yes, Poppy is a melee hypercarry.

Not very AD-centric, though.

The real problem is that it's almost all opinion-based.

Also, if Kayle and Jayce are melee, they need to get their 4 AD from the Preseason patch.

Note: They didn't.

If they weren't they couldn't use item 3077 , which they can, they have both ranged and melee forms, Kayls used to even be able to use tiamat with E active.

... You're missing my point.

Though yes, they have the capability to be melee, the fact of the matter is that neither spends much, if any, of their time fighting in that state.

Elphrihaim1 votes

Back when she could use Tiamat with her E active, Tiamat was a functionally different item. :/

just because the category has adc in it does not mean they should go bot. thats fucking stupid.

I NEVER SAID THAT

WHY ARE YOU REPLYING TO ME WHEN YOU SAY THAT?

Just... WHAT? And since you didn't quote I have to go into the piece-of-garbage-discussion-view to figure out what the hell you're saying. Which I don't want to, because I hate it /that/ much.

Okay. So, I still have no idea what you're talking about. The person that suggested they go bot-lane with a support was Raith alghul.

Ok maybe i should re focus and rename this concept. Its not necessarily just melee adcs, i'm counting assassins in general that tend to fall under this category (complex team fighting strategies, splitpushing, etc.) Don't focus on "What champions fall under this category so i can stress how easy it is to play them"

Also you're a level 24 who seems to main ranged AP mids. not only have you probably never played the 4 champions you've listed but you probably had no idea that the role of assassins was so complex. And even if you have, players at your level (and even some at my level i'm finding out) don't understand the concept of saving cc, keeping vision, calling mia, etc for champs like Yi, Katarina, Yas, trynd to some degree (to name a few) , and then cry OP when they get destroyed. Just stfu.

Not sure why you would classify Gangplank only as a bruiser when Critplank is a thing. Also, Kayle is technically melee, and Jayce can also fight in melee (although granted, he spends the vast majority of time as a ranged champion)

KMannnnn11 votes

One quick nitpick: Assassins are not built to deal DPS, they are meant to deal burst damage. DPS champions excel in extended fights, burst champions excel in small skirmishes. Also, assassins are supposed to single out and eliminate carries, high DPS champions are better for taking down tanks and structures.

Baunjo1 votes

DUDE!!! NO WAY! did you know that DPS stands for damage per second? and even if you manage to cast all your abilities in under 1 second its still considered DAMAGE PER SECOND? FUCKING UNREAL!

KMannnnn11 votes

Except that DPS is a common term used in games of multiple genres that is meant to reflect a character's persistent damage. By your logic, all damage is DPS, therefore there is no point in calling it DPS when you could just call it damage. DPS means something specific, whether you want it to or not.
