Played first game as Bard, he is amazingly that can be extremely lethal when mastered. He is easily compared to Lee Sin to a smaller degree, but not "Can't kill me can't tank me" sort of broken way.

Bard is a support champion. You can't top him or else you'll get bursted and zoned, same for mid and don't even think about jungle.

Bard's passive is everything. You run around collcting chimes for EXP, mana and speed (Get boots and collect them for over 500 MS!). The chimes empower your meeps, which is basically empowered AA. Huge damage, slow and AoE gives Bard unexpected camp/minion clear and works fine jumping into fights to use your meeps/Q.

Bard is a extremely powerful support. Your Q does decent damage and could be positioned to stun one or two champions, very smooth skillshot.

Bard's W is practically a ARAM heal kit. Place it in tactic positions for easy heals but without getting instantly destroyed by the enemies. You can also directly dump the heal onto your ally to survive that one aa or ability. Amazing ability with AP (I didn't focus on AP that round.)

Bard's E is a tunnel. It only works for walls and you might have to do some clicking before being able to use it. Remember, enemies can use it but travels slower, this is a great transport and "slow".

Here's a trick that I may be the first to stumble upon that I personally call "Tunnel Vacuum". If Thresh hooks and jumps on you though a wall, or Blitzcrank or somebody runs up to you. Pop your E and then half the time the enemies will accidentally go into the tunnel and waste their time. I first discovered this when Thresh hooked me and I used E in a panic, sending him AND Katarina to the other side of the wall I was standing at. #BardTroll.

Bards R is basically item 3157, stuns monsters, allies and enemies. The times you should use it is to cut off recalls, escapes, engange in fights and save your teammate if he/she is low and somebody is about to kill him/her.

There are vital things to do as Bard. Collect all the chimes you can, or else you're not as efficient as you could be. Hit them with meeps as often as possible, fire away with your Q to stun the enemy team, don't hesitant to ult your team AND, Bard is a unexpected bait/burst champion, he is actually pretty tanky with burst AAs so do not hesitant to dive or run in to hit enemies with your meeps. (I forgot, use E as often as possible to move your allies around quickly)

Bard is a AP brusier at it's heart. In my game, my build was item 3069 item 3143 item 3111 item 3102 item 3100 and item 1011 (item 3116 , nexus about to died and randomly brought item 3027.

item 3069, personally, the best support item for him to have. Frost is too useless early/mid game and doesn't compare to item 3069 at end game. item 3143 for a third CC (Passive slow and Ult item 3157), great health and armor value combined with it's AoE slow. item 3111 , Bard needs to be as mobile as possible and item 3117 is limited while Merc offers great CC reduction. item 3102 is your MR item and blocks that first spell. item 3100 mana to burn, fair AP for Passive/Q and the MS (Actually really matters). I got 600~ damage per meep AA thanks to this. item 3116 what I planned to build. It's a whooping 400 health AND 100 AP with a slow to push Bard meeps to a snail-paced slow AA while giving his Q a nice slow reduction on top of possible stun. May work on Ult, unsure, would be damn cool.

TL;DR

Bard is a AP Bruiser able to tank quite a bit, amazingly ability to troll and burst as well as being a excellent support that truly shines late game.
