Better finish - Shiphtur or xPeke?

RiotHitstreak·2/27/2014, 12:40:42 AM·5 votes·2,896 views

Last year, we xPeke defined the "backdoor" finish with his Kassadin teleport against SK Gaming at IEM Katowice. This year, we saw Shiphtur help Coast end TSM's 11-game winning streak with his Ahri armed with Lich Bane.

My question is simple - which play was better and why?

Here's xPeke's play against SK

and here's Shiphtur against TSM

Peke because FNC were losing vs SK and made the comeback turning it into an epic back and forth game, TSM vs CST was CST taking an early lead and not knowing how to close and TSM turtling. CST didn't know how to end and TSM were able to prolong the game for about an hour, not to mention all 4/5 SK were at FNC's nexus about to take it and CST were like 4 vs 2?

The other thing is that peke's situation was one which will likely never happen again- Kassadin against olaf at the nexus 1 vs 1. Olaf is the only champ in the game where no flash is meta (and trynd) and so he can't get to kass who has a 5 second flash. The situation was just unbelievable and I remember feeling giddy after it happened since peke was one auto attack away from gone. Also I think olaf was largely ignored after that game...RlP.

One thing to add is the initiative peke had to do that. He saved his teleport, stayed on 20% health before b'ing, and actually saw an oppportunity which no one watching could have predicted. Any normal person would have panic b'd and defended the nexus. The surprise was what made pekes play iconic, shiptur was doing what he had to do- continue to push, he had no reason to back with his ulti up. Also worth mentioning that peke practically soloe'd the nexus whilst 2-3 CST members had wore down TSM's.

So all in all, we will still call this the peke because well...it was iconic. Shipturs play was epic, but to be iconic it has to be fakers zed play vs ryu or pekes backdoor. To be fair to shiptur though, peke and faker are legends and have both won worlds before, so their plays wiil be more adored.

xPeke did it all solo Kassadin

For judging these kinds of situations, I apply the "Would it make Ocelote cry?" criterion.

The Xpeke made Ocelote cry.

The Shiphtur would not have made Ocelote cry. I think.

My vote goes to Xpeke. Just too much of a WTF turnaround compared to a game where Coast led the entire time.

Lol this is even a questioN? Xpeke by miles...shiptur just pushed the nexus with his whole team helpin him, big deal...? Peke did it 1 vs 5 and riftwalked over every axe...pekes will always be the backdoor, get real. Maybe these newschool kids didn't watch it live like I did so they dont appreciate its true glory

TL;DR stop disrespecting old school legendary plays by comparing it to this team raid on the nexus which people do every game? Thanks

xPeke dodges axes "NICE DODGE MAN"

Shiphtur dodges tibbers and near death "Nah they just missed no skill involved"

The question isn't who had "a better backdoor", it's who had the better play. Obviously Shiphtur didn't do a backdoor.

That being said, it isn't even a competition. What xPeke did was more clutch, a last ditch effort. It was way better mechanically, since he had to dodge them to get the Nexus from near full down to 0. But Shiphtur still did a great play.

xPeke secured a tournament win in one of the most tense situations ever. CST had all game to finish, they had such a lead, almost threw it but still didn't. Not nearly enough drama to hype Shiphtur to the level of the xPeke Kassadin backdoor.

Dodging axes as Kassadin - EZ mode. Juking Tibbers as Ahri - Shiphtur mode.

For me,when you watch the peke backdoor I get goosebumps that game was far more intense and just the overall outcome of it just makes it the better play

Shiphtur's, easily. Context matters here. Yeah, it was big for Fnatic to beat SK, but for the MASSIVE underdog (6% votes!) Coast to beat a streaking TSM team (11 straight wins?) was unbelievable. Yes, Coast was winning throughout the game, but TSM had just won two straight teamfights at their base to prolong the match and hopefully take it later on.

It ultimately came down to Shiphtur facing off with the consensus Best Mid NA around the nexus(Bjergsen), using a signature champ of his that we hadn't really seen since the previous season. Besides, Lich Bane on Ahri? Geez!

Shiphtur only succeeded because Xpecial wasted his Q instead of using WER then Q for the stun. Instead he missed tibbers and didn't get off his stun.

xPeke in the sense that whenever there is a backdoor successful in League of Legends, everyone will always chant his name. Shiphtur's play although godlike will be forgotten in a few weeks.

I couldn't care so much about the players. I'm voting for Ahri because she's one of my favorite champs and the 3rd one I got after soraka and ashe.

As for Kassadin, well he's broken and everyone who doesn't play him hates laning against him because he has too much counterplay. How come Ahri's ult that usable? Seriously. Ahri couldn't keep jumping back and forth like that and she doesn't have any mana regen in her kit to keep feeding it.

Another reason to vote for Ahri, that backdoor happened after she was nerfed and fell out of favor. Kass has been a must ban since I started paying attention to bans.

Menolikeyou2/27/2014, 9:04:23 AM1 votes

Pls, juking abilities with spirit rush that gives Lucy bane procs every change (which unlike kassa's oult does not have an increase mana cost) is not mechanically hard. Moreover if your team has taken most of the enemies abilities it's not that complicated. Not diminishing shipthur but although kasea is broken this is one of the reasons that made him perma ban

xPeke overall but Shiphtur did a great job finishing the game when they had the chance to. It is similar but when the rest of Coast was still alive in the base, they all communicated to protect Shiphture as TSM was spawning. Very well played, although I do feel they could have closed the game out sooner.

xPeke Kassadin all day errday.

Xpeke won by himself, Shiphtur had his team & basically got a bullshit finish off an item that probably shouldn't even proc for nexus damage.
