RiotHitstreak··18 votes·125,097 views

Even as we were celebrating the 2014 World Championship, we were already hard at work planning out our 2015 season. We've had some announcements recently with our Mid-Summer Invitational, All-Star Game and now with our Worlds location announcement (Europe, yes!), we're stoked to talk about all things 2015 League of Legends esports!

That's a wrap, thank you for joining us! We'll continue to check in for questions throughout the day.

The 2015 #LCS season kicks off tomorrow at 1800 CET/9:00AM PDT with Elements facing FNATIC live from our new studio in Berlin, Germany!

  1. What are the current plans for the broadcasting of the LPL? Why does the current bandwidth issue exist, causing the tension between casting both OCE and LPL out from the same studio -- was it an unforeseen hangup, or what were the reasons considered for the schedule clash?

  2. Kriz and Emily were volunteer casters for the CBLoL scene, but appear to have retired from that role recently. Does this signal plans for an English broadcast for the Brazilian scene as well? In general, what are the plans for South American esports, especially given Brazil's known issues regarding Nintendo's recent wholesale departure and the infrastructural deficits?

  3. The LMS is now the only major non-wildcard circuit to lack English broadcasts in any shape or form (excepting a couple VODs from me to try and bridge the gap for enthusiasts). I've been told that Garena TW wasn't planning one in the first place -- will this be addressed in the near future, and can I help?

  4. How much oversight does Riot have over competing organizations in China? There've been rumors of bait-and-switch contracts and shady agents during the China-Korea player transfers -- is that within your jurisdiction, or wholly up to Tencent and L-ACE to manage?

  5. OGN, now LCK, used to have 1080p available for subscribers, as well as the Twitch icons. Will at least the stream quality level be made available again in the future? (720p still causes clarity issues at times--names and numbers are especially affected). Speaking of which, are you adamant about keeping the LCK acronym?

  6. There've been significantly less coverage of collegiate and grassroots tournaments since S2--for obvious reasons, since the LCS and its peer circuits take precedence. But I personally feel this might be hindering developmental opportunities for future casters and players (the pressures of a live audience and face-to-face competition is incomparable to doing so within one's bedroom). Are there plans to spotlight more fan-operated initiatives?

"are you adamant about keeping the LCK acronym?"

I feel like KCL (Korean Champions League) sounds much better than LCK (League Champions Korea).

  1. The current plan is to twofold: (1) Invest in the broadcast so that it increases in quality. While the core casting team is strong, there are a bunch of opportunities to get the quality of the cast up. (2) Figure out how to get each game cast live. We're dedicated to doing that. We foresaw the bandwidth issue at launch but understand that in the long term, this will result in a great experience for LPL fans. We've seen that it takes a major investment to create a quality esport broadcast and we're ready to do so for the LPL.

  2. Can't really speak to this, sorry.

  3. There are no immediate plans to have an English LMS broadcast that I'm aware of. The team's primarily focused on running the new league and delivering a strong local broadcast (which I agree with - those should be the priorities). I'd imagine once the foundation is laid, English cast will be on their priority list.

  4. Our "central" esports team in LA works in partnership with our Riot office in Hong Kong and Tencent, similar to how we work with OGN/Kespa/Riot Korea. We let the local teams take the lead in both cases but we're there to advise and help them improve at a high level.

  5. I've talked to the OGN crew via Riot Korea and that 1080p option wasn't "true" 1080p. They've told us that they output in "true" 720p so that's what we're going with. I'm honestly not a technical expert here on these matters so I don't want to venture into waters where I can't speak with much authority. We won't call it 1080p if it's not 1080p - and to be clear, OGN controls bitrate and output quality. In terms of the LCK monicker, we let the local offices take the lead on the league name - it's not mandated by the central team. Calling it 'OGN' never made much sense to me, as an aside.

  6. I think future pro players can get plenty of spotlight through challenger and streaming, but we're certainly interested in helping create opportunities for and spotlighting potential future casters.

edit: clarity on #5

NA rank reset? Has it happened? For some reason this information is like the Lost city of Atlantis to me.

Perhaps - whenever NA gets Worlds next, Canada would definitely be considered for one of the stopping points.

What is the thinking behind the hashtag We are LCS? To me it seems like a poorly ripped off version of different sports hashtags like the Toronto Raptors We the North.

RiotHitstreak3 votes

The idea behind the #WeAreLCS campaign was to convey the message that it's not just the players on each team that make up the LCS. Without really high level play and without passionate fans, the LCS wouldn't be a thing. This concept isn't unique to the LCS - this can be said for any sport - but I think what really makes the LCS different is the very direct connection many fans feel to their team and the players on their favorite teams.

General

  • Seeing how there will be no play offs at PAX this year, is it correct to assume that Gamescom will also not see an LCS event?
  • Will there be a roadshow event this year (both NA or EU) and could you hint at possible locations?

LCS

  • How close is the cooperation between Riot and the teams in regards to acquiring visas and sorting out the issues that arise there?
  • The video features are a great part of the LCS production. Will we see one or more that focus on the work that the "little people" do behind the scenes?

And finally

  • On a scale of $100 to $1,000,000 how fine is Nick Allen?
Riotjasonoliver2 votes

We will be doing roadshows this year, and are still working on confirming the locations in both NA and EU. Riot will be announcing plans for Gamescom in the coming weeks.

RiotTheBurritoGod2 votes

On the visa front, ultimately its up to the teams to apply for and acquire the visas for their players. We help by connecting teams in need to immigration lawyers familiar with the visa process, and we supply the necessary paperwork and letters to vouch for the players as they apply.

Follow up question, who is your favorite league community chef?

The kind with bacon and other deliciousness inside. Too wild for just cheese.

Have you considered making a switch of broadcast in the middle of the LCS season? So you know, EU players get weekendgames half of the time and NA players get them the other half?

Will we be seeing an upgrade to 1080p or 60FPS for streams/vods this year?

RiotBi0major4 votes

This is Ariel Horn, for those that don't recognize the tag. Good question. Among the 1080p or 60fps upgrade, I think we would see an appreciable increase in game smoothness and clarity from 60fps. We are working with our tech team to potentially purse this direction. We already produce our shows in 60fps so it's a matter of testing to ensure that the distribution partners can accommodate and won't default to variable bit rates or fewer frames.

This is Ariel Horn for those that don't recognize my tag. We are testing for 60fps as that will have an appreciable positive affect on in-game smoothness and clarity. We need to confirm that the distribution partners can accept this and will not switch into variable bit rates and frame rates. Pretty confident that this will be rolled out in the near future.

While broadcasting and having the client set to 1080p is obviously optimal. It's worth noting that even if you're unable to broadcast in 1080p, it would be nice to either resize the HP bars when the client is in 720p or simply set your client to 1080p while broadcasting. It becomes difficult to see what's going on in team fights at 720p because the HP bars take up more space. The icons on the minimap are also a bit harder to read. Here's an example:

http://i.imgur.com/MPMViwV.png

On the left is an HP bar in 720p. On the right is an HP bar in 1080p downsampled to 720p for size comparison. HP bars take up roughly 33% more room in 720p.

If you had to give 3 reasons why this Esports season/year/whatever will be better then the others, what would they be and why?

RiotRedBeard6 votes

In no particular order - better season format (shorter regular season / longer playoffs / circuit points), international upgrades (formats and schedules are more aligned, MSI makes more sense to celebrate spring winners, added ASG at the end of the year, international league content more available), and third, I got baking soda

Do you already have chosen places for Worlds in Europe and keeping it in secret for now or are you still searching for them?

What are the plans, if any, for increasing the viewership of League of Legends esports beyond players of the game?

There are clear challenges associated with presenting esports to audiences unfamiliar with the specifics of the game being played. How do you address the challenge of attracting naive viewers (and prospective players) without alienating die-hard fans?

RiotMagus3 votes

Our goal is focusing on viewers who are knowledgeable in League of Legends. By making an esport that you guys want to watch and are passionate about, we believe it will spread naturally (much like how League of Legends grew - through passionate individuals sharing with their friends and family). There are clear challenges with presenting any esport above and beyond sports that are easier to understand at a visual level, and that's why having League of Legends players/fans watching alongside those new viewers is the best way to make our esport "stick" outside of players.

A lot of European countries have a long history of state funding for small community sports initiatives (soccer clubs and the like). Are you exploring these options when it comes to expanding the amateur scenes around Europe - through outreach to schools and after-school institutions for example?

What is the copyright status of LCK?

As a content creator it seems like CJ (who owns OGN) is hitting with copyright strikes every channel uploading videos from LCK. Does CJ own the LCK material and they are doing it rightfully or Riot owns the LCK material so they are abusing the youtube copyright system? Are you working towards a solution (and if yes what solution might that be) for this matter?

We were very pleased with Imagine Dragons at Worlds. They are genuinely great guys and passionate gamers. Glad that you appreciated the collaboration. We're looking at a lot of different ideas for 2015 Worlds but would always want to collaborate with artists that share a similar authentic connection with our community.

Why does Riot treat tampering more seriously than any other sport? Do you feel it grants a competitive advantage?

RiotTheBurritoGod2 votes

Hard to say if we take it more seriously than other sports, as its difficult to know exactly what's happening behind the scenes in other leagues. With that being said, we do take it very seriously:

  • On your point about competitive advantage, its more about the damage that tampering can do. Imagine a scenario where a player is approached to play for an opposing team during playoffs. If I was that player, I would be less interested in performing well knowing that I have a spot on another team when the season ends. This sort of tampering can have massive implications--for players, teams, as well as fans.

  • The league is relatively young, and we want to crack down on this particular issue (along with many others) now before it starts to trend in an unwieldy direction.

We've had the benefit of seeing how damaging tampering can be in other sports/esports, which has shown us how important it is for us to get involved. This isn't all of our thoughts on the topic, but illustrates some of the reasons why we take it so seriously.

Are contracts available to other teams, so they know if a player's contract is coming up? In other professional leagues like the NFL, NBA, etc the contract lengths are known and a free agency period is clear so that a team knows if a player is going to be available and when they can talk to them. Will we see changes to create more of this type of format?

RiotTheBurritoGod3 votes

Contracts themselves aren't available, but the contract end dates are available on lolesports! For example, you can find maplestreet8's contract end date on his page: http://na.lolesports.com/na-lcs/2015/spring/players/maplestreet8

We did this to make sure teams knew when they could approach players, in an effort to prevent tampering.

IMeMps1 votes

What are the plans regarding all the transferproblems with poaching and such lately, any thought on adding something like a lot of other sports have, that if you have lets say 1 month left of the contract ur allowed to discuss with other teams?

RiotTheBurritoGod4 votes

Definitely something that we're talking about. The World Championship brings up some logistical issues with that model:

  • Currently player contracts must end by a certain point in the year (mid November). If we have a 1 month restricted free agency, this could have adverse affects on players attending Worlds. Imagine players negotiating contracts with their opponents during the World Championship, because they're under restricted free agency. I wish the solution was as easy as moving up the contract end dates to sometime in December to avoid these types of negotiations, but a change like that would mean less time between contract end dates and the start of the season. This would mean less time for visas, sponsor acquisitions, player brand development, etc.

  • Additionally, players not attending Worlds would have a leg up on the players attending, as they don't have to focus on playing and can focus on contract negotiations and shopping around.

This is something on our radar and something we are putting a lot of thought into before moving on.

It's a worrying you're reluctant to grant agency because it seems like you're not grasping how grave this issue is. What Riot is basically enforcing is the perception that teams own the players, and players have little to no imput on where to take their careers because they and their potential employers are persecuted if they take initiative AFTER THE TERMS OF THE CONTRACT ARE FULFILLED. It was worrying with Bjergsen and became alarming after the Scarra incident.

I understand you're trying to control malicious cases, but nothing in the ones that happened pointed to bad faith, yet the rule assumes there always is. Contacts started by players, mosly in innocent conversations about future, according to the information given to us, were met with brutal fines, giving the public the perception that they did something deplorable, some wrongly say ILLEGAL, and Riot has done nothing to address that fact.

A "what if" cannot cause Riot to take away from a player their internationally recognized right to determine the terms of his employment. Receiving a job offer when employed is not even remotely morally questionable, and while in a closed competitive environment restrictions must be set in order to keep the integrity, you simply cannot allow yourselves to justify yourselves within than context and forget something as basic as employment agency. Teams don't own their players. A player's drive to seek to better his work dimension cannot just be outright sacrificed for the possibility of wrongdoing, and nothing that Riot has done to address this issue points in any other direction. The promise to find a viable workaround should not be a "we're working on it" like replay systems. This is a serious issue, treat it as such.

Before you point out you've instated new rules and released "jurisprudence" on the original rules about "poaching", you're right. We noticed you evn addressed TSM's blatant pay for silence on the Santorin case by requesting officials to be notified of the negotiationsbefore they start. The issue stands: making exploring options for a player a supervised procedure by both current employer and Riot just enforces the perception that players aren't in control of their employment. You're not asking yourself "what if" a team notified of the interest of another org pays that org to rescind their bid for that player. The curent system allows for that, negotiations made unbeknownst to a player, yet you only seek to defend orgs. I don't know what the answer to this isuue is, but you're currently very not on the fucking ball, pardon my expression.

AngeltheDumbBoy2 votes

So organizations are just allowed to be screwed in these deals? Players are allowed to just up and leave cause they want too? That's not how sports work. I don't think any sport allows a player to just enter into negations with another team before their contracts are expired. Teams have to go through the proper channels, which means if Team A wants a player from Team B, they have to contact the management on Team B. If you allow players to enter negotiations at will they will be compromised. It's a serious issue and needs to be handled carefully. Proper procedure needs to be educated and enforced. Players that sign contracts should know the terms of the deal and should know the correct way to find a new team, by talking to their management.
