Lux VFX Update

RiotSirhaian··1 votes·102,200 views

Hello everyone!

Similar to the previous VFX updates we’ve made in the past (Ziggs, Olaf, Tryndamere, etc), we're working on updates to the Visual Effects (VFX) of more champions whose spell effects are in need of some love. Our aim is to get their FX to current League standards and improve gameplay clarity. In Patch 9.24, we'll be releasing a VFX Update for Lux!

Just like the previous ones, and since these are smaller updates geared toward sprucing up some of the oldest members of the roster, they aren't in the same prioritization conversation as to how we decide who gets a VGU (where we take model, gameplay, and thematic into account too!): they do not affect any other timeline, and are simply dev passion projects.

We're looking for feedback on her changes, which should be up on the PBE soon. Please try her out there —especially if you're a main— and leave us your feedback once the changes are up!

####Lux LUXLux

VFX Update aimed at improving gameplay readability and bringing up her VFXs to today's standards. Also, more rainbows.

##Base Kit:

  • BA - Cleaned up missile and impact.

  • Q - Added a subtle effect to show the width of the missile. Also more sparkly and rainbowy!

  • W - Mostly just a clean-up. Added a subtle missile width indicator on missile going out.

  • E - Revamped and cleaned up charge and explosion effects. Missile still similar.

  • R - Effect has been completely overhauled. Now has indicator lines on both sides to show the actual width of the beam. Also has a line at the end to show the actual range of it (it was kind of really off before, ahem).

  • P - Just cleaned up a bit.

  • Idle Effects - Cleaned up and improved idle staff effects.

Skin changes:

  • All Skins: Cleaned up and matched base.
  • Steel Legion Lux: Cleaned up lightning effects on Q missile, E explosion and R beam.

All the most recent skins changes are very minor.

Please test those changes on the PBE once she's up and let us know if you have any feedback!

EDIT: Some Changes I've done since I posted this originally:

  • Reduced some of the pinks overall
  • Narrowed her auto attack missiles
  • Reduced Base Q brightness slightly
  • Added a trail to Base Q
  • Added sparks on Q width indicator to make it a bit clearer
  • Base W missile orbs are now pale orange like the rest of her kit
  • Adjusted Base E explosion color
  • Base R Red beam is now more red
  • Added slightly more oomph to her Base R beam
  • Did a value pass on all skins for her R
  • Added a scorch mark on all her skins after R has fired
  • R cleanup (too many lines)
  • Changed the R indicators to match skin color where appropriate
  • Adjusted her Quick Cast indicators to actually (and finally) match the range and width of her abilities

Hello, I am a LuxLux otp with 2 million points on the Euw server that has been playing since the end of season 3, and seeing this makes me very happy because it is a love for the base of the skin of Lux and Steel Legion, so first of all I wanted to thank you for this❤ Making a review of the new visual effects:

BA - It has a cleaner and more colorful effect, and the effect is luminous, I definitely love it ❤ But about the impact of the basic attack on the enemy looks smaller and weak than the older, so I think it would be still better if you combine both impacts effects: the old version with the new one that you did❤

Score 8/10

Q - It has new visual effects that flash with beauty, small colored sprinkles jump in the light, and it all looks very Disney. I have seen it in slow motion and I have noticed that it illuminates with different spectra of the rainbow during the different points of his trajectory ❤

Score 10/10

W - The shield feels more refined with cleanliness, and the lux particles sprout in a more magical way when you throw the shield, it is beautiful, but being honest I don't like that the shield then shines yellow / gold, because in essence the light of lux is white, and yellow does not generate that same feeling of "rainbow" as the color white, because it is the combination of all the spectra that make up and generates a rainbow, so I would love that the light that wraps around Luxanna's shield remain white-rainbow please

Score 4/10

E - I really love this renovation, it is beautiful how the projectile emanates a lot of light when it is positioned in a place, Lucent Singularity looks like a star of light that sends successive waves of light and power in the position in which it is located. a great effect, I also love the explosion, it is very beautiful, but I think I would like it better if the explosion were a little more rainbow instead of that pink, and I love pink, but the essence of Lux is in the Rainbow, pink, is already characteristic of other skins, as Sexy Jack Rabbit (OCE) had said

Score 9/10

R - What I mainly notice is that the Lux beam has always been so flat, a 2D ray, and the truth was already obsolete compared to the 3D effect of her new skill, as well as the one shown in comic book deliveries from Lux, where she and Sylas launch a powerful white rainbow beam of 3D light several times

On the one hand, I loved that I changed from 2D to 3D. But with respect to colors, I have the feeling that it is less "rainbow" because it looks very yellow / golden, just like the shield, and the essence of pure light is white, therefore, the white light is divided into the successive colors of rainbow. The R of the base lux has always been white for that reason, and that white light always next to the other colors has made it seem very "rainbow", in fact, Lux has special interactions talking near the rainbow, it's something characteristic of the champion That is why that golden glow looks like a wonderful woman or a carnival, doesn't look so powerful like the original in the effect, and I feel that it does not combine well with her essence and I would like it to be white-rainbow instead of yellow /gold, respecting its true nature. In addition, in the current Lux R you can see all the colors of the rainbow, in this, I have seen the animation in slow motion and the ray has frames where it looks blue-gold-red, blue-white-yellow, and even frames where the beam looks dark gray or gold or 100% yellow In fact, in the mentioned deliveries of this year with the comics of Lux, the ray looks white with rainbow tones, it is something that when seeing it with the gold / yellow does not combine too much

Score 2/10

It seems that the effect of the Lux burn from the base of the skin has been eliminated when it hits the enemies with the ultimate ability, please I pray for being returned, and also the effect of the "heat wave" after having launched the R once finalized, which can currently be seen in the last current base lux after the end of the cast of R. These effects can be clearly seen in the video of the R of Lux in the launcher, in the collection.

I love that the staff is illuminated all the time, it shows that she is the bearer of the light <3 And I love how everything illuminates during the cast of the R, very nice 10/10

Regarding Steel Legion's skin, I liked it almost completely, except for the shield that retains exactly the same skin base with that golden color that combines nothing (3/10)

In addition the effect of the E that is the same also of the base of the skin, except when it explodes, (5/10) I think that to correct the E it is necessary to give a more electric or sparkling effect to the particles of light when the Lucent Singularity is in position (not exploding yet).

The Q with those blue electric effects, reminds quite a bit of the elementalist form of the ray for being very similar and I suggest transforming the electric of the blue color with rainbow colors so that it is not blue (3/10). Finally I think the effect of the true rainbow of the ulti is beautiful, although I also miss the electrifying essence of the previous one. To value the R of the new Legion of steel seems complicated to me, because on the one hand I like the idea of making it a true more "alive" and magical because of the colors that preserve the base of the skin, but at the same time I miss the so electrifying effect of the previous one, I think I would rate it as (7/10), and I think that to improve it it could be great to create a thunder - rainbow, in which the ray instead of shining with a blue color, let it shine with all the colors of the rainbow, how I would love it❤

Regarding the indicators of where the R goes, I support you, because I know that this is not a mistake or a failure, it is a visual effect that is generated from the perspective of the game camera, so I think is normal that you can not always see the two delimiting lines from where the beam passes, since it depends on the angle from which it is launched and the direction-destination to which you want to reach. The Q and the basics have enamored me as you have done them, and I would ask you to leave them like that, it's very rainbow Disney, just as I think it should be Lux's own kit, characteristic of his personality and essence ❤

This has been all about my review, I'm sorry if I don't explain something well, I'm learning english yet >< I think you did a good job and you have the potential to do it still better ❤ I appreciate your time and attention, thank you very much ❤ [sg-lux]

Ult needs more "laser" it's lacking some umph you know?

Other than that I think when it comes to the money makers Rioters def do not half-ass the work/updates/reworks.

Looks good

CodeDeath9 votes

In addition to the Oomph it's lacking, I believe her current R has some heat shimmer/haze which shows better how powerful the beam actually is. Aside from that, I think they overdid it with the rainbows, though I'm not THE Lux player, so....

Sexy Jack Rabbit21 votes

My only points of feedback is too tone down some of the pink featured in her classic visual effects.

Maybe offset it with some more white. It feels like it's stepping on the toes of her Star Guardian and Prestige skin a lot, by featuring a lot of their colour palette. This is most notably for the end of her E "Pop".

Also her Steel Legion skins Q is now just sparkles with some blues, whereas before it was very visibly a sort of ball of electricity.

Thanks!! Let us know if anything doesn't feel right when you play her. :)

From the video there is a jump in the rotation of the scepter during W. At the end of the route it jumps for at least a 1/4 rotation, getting a buggy effect.

ModThe Djinn15 votes

Any chance you could consider slightly strengthening the AoE size indicator of the W? I notice you did some work to highlight the width of the Q (which reads very well), but the rotation of the W means it's more visually busy, and that makes the subtle AoE effect harder to notice.

Otherwise looks great, although I think the rainbow effect on the snare is a bit pushed compared to the rainbow effects elsewhere, which are more subtle in nature. It makes that one seem a bit disconnected from the rest. It also may be my imagination, but the ultimate (across most skins, and especially Star Guardian) doesn't feel quite as impactful, but I can't figure out precisely what changed.

DeathDefied14 votes

Steel Legion looks like an unfinished skin with this mix of base and its own vfx

Sir Saltarin10 votes

Looks good.

My only feedback is that it should be less pink.

RiotSirhaian7 votes

Thanks! I'll balance the pinks out a bit so they are less prominent. :)

WHAT!!? no. Please add more pink.

Star Guardian Lux VFX now all pink

Looks amazing! What do you think of the idea of using Lux's crit animation, which is both really nice and never seen, as the animation for when you hit an enemy champion with her passive on them?

That's a great idea, actually. But I think that's not his field, since he only works on visual effects

Fenbach9 votes

not much of a lux player but the Steel Legion skin looks a lot less lightning-y than before, besides the ult I could hardly tell the particle effects apart

please do this for fucking nautilus, i love getting hooked by an invisible anchor that was 3 feet away from me.

I LOVE how her ult leaves a scorched black line on the ground in the basic/steel legion skin effects. It means I'll probably be using Spell Thief and the like much more lol. This looks amazing, thank you.

Lúx Bot7 votes

I love it but I think Steel Legion looks really similar to her base kit VFX. I think it needs to stand out more. Also Elementalist Lux's box warning is way redder than all the other skins, seems like it needs to be on the same level as them aswell.

Shnabbydoodle6 votes

Looks great! A few critiques:

  • Base skin Q should have a more apparent "core" like elementalist, currently looks like a puff of light (might just be me though)
  • The wand changing direction during W seems a little abrupt
  • R should have a stronger feel to it
  • I feel like you could go even further with the R hitbox and shade/brighten the area inside the boundaries more/faster

Other than that, very excited to see this go live!

yeah R definitely lacks oomph compared to live.

White Diamond5 votes

I feel like her ult vfx feels weaker and nerfed and I really dont like that. I love how SG and Elementalist feel really powerful when ulting, but im not feeling that here. Would be a shame if my favorite skin of the game got ruined like that, so I hope you can bring back the explosive feeling the current ults have.

Other than that, brilliant (hehe) work, everything looks great

Kazekiba5 votes

Save the rainbows for Star Guardian; Lux looks a lot better with predominately white/blue lights, more appropriate to her namesake as well.

DeathBurst5 votes

The R when it is "apparently horizontal" seems to be much wider than it actually is, due to the second, fainter line of the VFX. When it it "vertical" it's perfect, the two "main" lines are very clear, but horizontal, it's really worse than before, in my humble opinion.

Lux Like Trouble5 votes

As a big Lux player, I'm so excited to see her getting new vfx! They look amazing so far and I can't wait to test them on PBE.

In terms of feedback, the ground target indicator for the ultimate seems to be significantly more red and bright in her Elementalist and Battle academia skins than any of her other skins. The subtle blue of her base vfx looks nice where its at, but in the Elementalist and Battle academia skins the bright red seems a bit too noticeable, almost mimicking the look of the laser itself, which bothers me. Otherwise, I love the direction of these changes!

Is there an E.T.A. for when the PBE will be updated with them?

i have to compliment you on the username, it's a pretty good twist on one of those types of names.

It looks good! My main concern would be around how ambiguous the auto attacks look. If you were to see one from fog of war and were a new player, there's a chance that they could be mistaken for a Q instead. Making the autos a little bit more crisp with a more sharply defined point might help with that? I'm not 100% sure though.

Where would you ever see a Lux basic attack and not immediately see Lux herself?

Will her Ult Animation finally match its hitbox? That thing's been jank for years.

Hello there ! Excellent job ! I actually love the slight pinkish/rainbow effects in the spells, it gives an Annie-versary vibe (whose vfx are insane imo). I'll try to test her out on the PBE, but for now, as many already pointed out, I feel like the R should have a little more power to it, although I'm not sure what's lacking.

Are you also in charge of the audio for the spells ? Or only the animations ?

Great job overall anyway :)

RiotSirhaian7 votes

Thanks! I'll try to give it a little more oomph. :) I'm not in charge of the audio, though. ;n;

Vuux3 votes

I'm sad that you removed the lightning bolts that drop down on targets struck by Steel legion lux's ult. What was really cool about that skin was all the electrical vfx, but now it looks very plain. It also shouldn't be a giant, solid block when she first begins channeling it, but a sort of arcing electric blue bolt. As long as the markers on the ground signify where the ult is, this shouldn't be a problem.

Not sure if it's possible, but if you could somehow add more electric to Steel legion's abilities it would be much appreciated, as this is probably the last opportunity for it.

As a dedicated Lux main I have some minor complaints about look of the ult on some skins. Can you change a color of her ult in base model to be more like regular one at the same stage? I like old ult color much better. I spent a lot of time making sure it matches the hitbox.

I suspect the concern here is partly what can happen due to terrain heights with long ultimates, where the hitbox as fired from Lux's position (say, a Lux in the Blue jungle firing on an opponent in the river) isn't displayed properly from the camera's perspective. Is this accounted for in some manner, by any chance? Because I suspect this is what RayDenki may be referring to.

RiotSirhaian4 votes

Oh, I see. Sadly, I do not have any way to adjust the height of the VFX depending on the terrain height over such a long range... :(

Oh, I see. Sadly, I do not have any way to adjust the height of the VFX depending on the terrain height over such a long range... :(

I figured that wouldn't be part of your work, 'cause resolving it would require some odd things like changing the angle of the effect based on the view of each individual champion, and that would STILL lead to clarity issues if you, say, flashed to the terrain height of the caster mid-animation. Thanks for the answer though!

Cerebral094 votes

Yeah definitely some engineering effort required there. It'd be really awesome for clarity if the team could look into this at some point though. I suspect it'd be pretty challenging :(

This height-discrepancy bit has killed me and my friends a number of times when we thought we were out of the effect. I suspect this additional clarity on the effect will make those circumstances even more confusing, since on our screens we can clearly see we were outside of the effect's (now much more clearly) displayed hitbox when in reality due to the terrain height difference we were actually still in it :(

Good place to test is firing the ult from the inhib towers down a lane and positioning your dummies just above/below where you think it should hit based on the VFX. (note I think this would apply more to the left/right facing portions of the lane, so the northern part of toplane or the southern part of botlane)

-edit-

I made this mockup of a real in-game ult to help a friend understand what happened a while ago. I put a little 'shadow' tracer underneath where the ult hitbox ACTUALLY lives in this situation and my buddy Treisk thought he was clearly out of the ult but instead he got hit; similarly the minion wave was missed despite it looking like they were pretty clearly in the effect

Thank you, I will check it out. Because, on live, Lux's hitbox are awful.

The video is showing really great VFX, congratulations, I'm impressed. Nevertheless, I will have to try on PBE first to give my final thoughts.

Lux subreddit mod here and I have to say oh my god what an awesome job! Thank you for all the effort! Expect further feedback when I get on PBE! I also stickied the thread in our subreddit so people can find this!

I only have one thing to point out from the clips: the returning W animation seems to... stutter a bit? Did it always do that?

RiotSirhaian5 votes

Thank you so much! :)

I do not have control over the speed or fluidity of the W missiles. ;n; I can have a look, though!

LordRedStone Nr12 votes

W reversing its spinning direction is very distracting - it caught my attention when it shouldn't really have, especially the Steel Legion skin. Was it like that before and your effects only highlight it, or was that changed?

Tylobe2 votes

I've always wondered, it's probably not in work sight at all, but why not making a fire vfx for commando lux? [sg-lux-2] I know it's juste a 520 skin but, you know, she got a flamethrower so...

Dead Ice Cream2 votes

Her abilities feel a lot cleaner in my opinion when i tried her out in PBE but my only "complaint" is the Steel Legion skin. I love the enhanced lightning effect on her E and R but her Q effects when it hits an enemy looks too similar to the base skin for a 1350 RP skin and her W has the same effect. So my only suggestion is maybe make the shield and Q hit look a little more blue to give it that electric vibe? Otherwise the other skins are looking great. Just a bit sad that the other skins like Sorceress, Spell thief and Commando share the base VFX. Thank you!

Hello!

I like the new colours. Maybe steel legion lux and star guardian lux need some changes. Will lux get splash art updates in the near future? I'm not sure you are the right person to ask, but I don't know where to write this. Can you put the mouse cursor in lux's q to the middle please? It's in the right side and it's annoying, because I'm using quick cast and I can easily miss the skill because of this. Here what I'm talking about.

https://gifyu.com/image/viyi

And how it looks when I'm casting the skill.

Thank you if you read it and I hope you can solve this problem.

It looks amazing! I like it a lot. I only have two pieces of feedback:

Base skin: The only thing I'm not convinced is the gold/yellow coloration on the shield (W). It looks great and feels magical, but the color doesn't convey "made of light" as much.

Elementalist lux: I feel that the new ground indicator on the ult is way too noticeable, especially compared to the rest of the skins.

Other than that, it is awesome and really well made. Can't wait to try it in-game!
