Nexus Blitz Dev 8/3: Jungle goals

Hi friends, Figured it would be useful to start a series of posts that give greater context on the changes we make to Nexus Blitz as we get closer to the live Alpha. This is the first. Let's talk about the jungle.

Nexus Blitz Jungle We want the jungle in Nexus Blitz to be easier/more learnable than on SR (and perhaps a good place to practice basic mechanics before trying the role on the bigger map). Since NB only has 2 roles (Lane and Jungle) it's very likely that everyone will be end up jungling at some point. Hopefully, we can preserve a number of the parts of jungling that SR junglers enjoy while expanding the appeal of the role to non-junglers as well. We also like duo jungling quite a bit and are hoping that it feels fresh and exciting to play with a friend (who might be better or worse than you). We're trying to remove as many barriers to that experience as possible.

To that end, the Nexus Blitz jungle is being tuned to allow numerous champion combos to function. The primary challenge when clearing isn't health cost, but time. Camps don't hurt all that much, especially after the first clear, and mainly just take a while to kill. We'll also be looking at the starting jungle items and enchantments as needed to ensure that a wide range of classes can fit into the role. Duo jungle helps here because you can pick pairs that compensate for each other's weaknesses.

So far we've seen tanksMaokai , fightersRiven , magesBrand , and even some marksman and support pairsJinx Lulu have success. Fingers crossed we can keep a hold of that diversity once Nexus Blitz's four-week live alpha begins and a meta shakes out. At the end of the day we don't expect EVERY champion to jungle in NB, but we do hope we can get a wider range of picks, supporting tons of potential pairings.

Do you have any thoughts on NB jungle? Things you like? Ways to improve it? Please keep the feedback coming.

There's way too many blast cones in the jungle. A couple is fine but a number of them are in places that don't make sense and I often see them completely ignored in the matches I've played. The two side by side above blue buff in particular could be done away with. The positioning of blue buff itself is also weird because it's in vision of the lane, so it ends up being a team objective rather than a jungle camp even though the buff can only go to two people.

Hey :D Personally I probably will not play Nexus Blitz myself as I am not a fan of a casual experience but I had a couple of related points that I would like to hear your thoughts on:

  1. Do you think Nexus Blitz's casual feel will effect summoners rift in any way? I.E maybe in terms of priority focus of the Dev team or design integration?

  2. On a related note, since Blitz offers a more casual and fast experience for players who "don't have time" can we see an increase in game duration/length on summoners rift? I feel that in its current state League has lost its strategic nuance which is a big part of its identity and became a mere team death-match type of game.

Cheers.

Could you comment on whether this will have bans when released live? I know I'm not the only one who won't play a game mode like this without bans.

Hey I've really been loving Nexus Blitz both in and out of lane but one thing has been bothering me. Right now the lower lane feels pretty awkward, almost just tacked on along the outside of the map. As a person who has been mostly playing Jungle (double jungle is fantastic by the way) I never seem to ever roam towards to bottom edge of the map, and I often feel like I see players freely just shift between the two lanes.

My idea would be to take the buff that is currently above the upper lane (blue) and instead structure the lower half of the map to be spaced out slightly further with the buff between the two lanes. Or otherwise honestly I would prefer something even slightly more impactful (Herald?) so that theres a nice spacer between the two lanes but plenty of reason to contest the area between the two.

That all said though Nexus Blitz has been a huge breath of fresh air and I can't wait to see things evolve over time (hostile roaming Epic monster event pls?) so thank you for trying to work with your players to create something amazing :)

My biggest issue with the jungle is that it feels horrible if you don't play premade unless you have a really fast farming jungler(nasically anynone with bloodrazor) If you play a more suportive jungler and you're buddy leaves you alone, you just become miserable as you can't clear shit without a high dps champ, causeing you to fall behind quickly. In the game where my random jungle buddy and were on the same page and sticked together with similar pathing in mind, it was quite fun and usually a clear victory. However, once that's not a case, it's very frustrating and feels impossible to win. So with how it's right now, matchmakeing will basically deside the jungle and with that most of the time the game. If you get matched with a random vs a oremade duo in the NB jungle, it's basically gg unless those two are drunk or something. Also, the jungle, especiall the buffs, feel a bit to croweded and to close together/toto the lanes. Haveing 3 objectives in the middle of a single small jugle feels like overkill. And Raptors beeing partially in range of the lane tower feels pretty bad, it's a big clearity issue as you just don't expect that when you invade and it doesn't feel the extra protection is neccesary since the jungle has it's own tower already. I'd like to see that redisigned a bit, with bluebuff beeing a bit more seperate from lane(still easy to reach but not as openly visible without wards) and some extra space in the top for the redbuff, with herrald maybe beeing in an oval pit between the buffs that opens towards both bases.

I feel like I don't have much to do. If the other side is as competent as you, and also picked junglers that can fight/skirmish early, and lanes are even (no help), then you can't do red (whoever uses cooldowns/hp on it loses), so you just kinda ward it and go play aram bot. Like why not have a solo jungle, use the force smite and an anti poach mechanic, and have a pair of 2v2s. it's already best to have 1 utility 1 tank supp in this mode, one in a duo lane the other helping the 'real' jungler.

Hey, I encountered a huge bug - I picked Volibear in the jungle and completely lost the ability to use my Q after i first casted it lvl 2. The first use was normal, displaying the animation and stuff but I wasn't able to attack the jungle monsters and had to wait until the spell wears off. After that, a black blank box appeared in the place of normal ability icon and I wasn't able to use it nor add a skill point to it. The game was pretty intense and I forgot to make any screenshots...

Sorry this isn't about jungle, but will infinitely scaling champs be taken into account with the shorter game lengths?

It would kind of suck for all the Bard, Thresh, Nasus, Veigar etc. mains to feel that their champion will never reach that point. Cheers!

(Posting this here since I don't have PBE acc) I also know this thread isn't the best one to ask but.. oh well Since you're content at bringing back old new items (saw Zephyr added recently) what about Eleisa's Miracle and Ionic Spark pretty pls?

Bring back old galio. This one is awful since all you do is nerf him because of your beloved pro scene thats all you buff/nerf about...

His cocky attitude is the worst thing that ever happened to this game...

He was a failure.

Give back the good champion. Thanks.

I have a champion specific question for this role, what about ivern? He has a really unique interaction with jungle camps, he may need a really unique solution to this map. Maybe like a second player can help channel the jungle camps with him to speed up the channel? Which would mean if you have ivern literally anyone can be his partner.

We'll also be looking at the starting jungle items and enchantments as needed to ensure that a wide range of classes can fit into the role.

The easiest and most heavy handed way of doing this would be to reducing champion damage to monsters (except the jungle item damage) while making jungle items deal a constant DoT of some sort which would be the base line yes some champions would still be better but the base line of the high damage from the jungle items combined with the reduced damage from abilities/auto attacks would lead to some equalization of clear time

(another way instead of reducing champion damage you can also just give them lots of HP and or resistances and make the jungle item DoT deal % max health true damage)

Diversity works for the jungle, but not for the gamemode. I have played Rakan as second jungler, and it works fine if you start with E (and have Aery). You barely lose HP, but it costs time, just as lined out in the post. However, I think this jungle diversity does not carry over into the meta. So far, everyone seems to play Bruisers, Assassins and Mages. Enchanter (or rather squishy) junglers get killed way too fast in a skirmish.

Also, can you look at reset timings? We had a red buff resetting 3x because we pulled it out a little and just took too long to kill it.

Been having a lot of fun with the mode. Imo, the battle royale event though sometimes can end up WAY too deep in one territory. Like, how is one team supposed to contest that when its between the outer and inner towers. Also, the shield reward imo is a bit ridiculous at its current levels.
