The way comments are sorted needs to be changed.

I'm not sure how comments are sorted, but right now it seems to be purely based on how many replies someone gets or something? This results in the biggest troll getting their throne at the top of the comments in every thread. In addition to making the boards look worse, it stifles meaningful discussion and just results in people trying to debate someone who likely isn't going to be reasoned with anyway.

Comment sorting in Discussion View is based on a combination of voting (both upvotes, downvotes, and combined/net votes) as well as replies (and their votes). The vast majority of the time, this will result in the most active comment threads being lifted to the top of the thread, but admittedly it can fail in some cases where a poorly thought out comment thread makes it to the top.

Unfortunately, changing the boards algorithms is something beyond the scope of the volunteer moderation team at this time, and even if we could change it, I'm not sure we could do much better.

I invite you, however, to please post links to threads/comment threads that you think were elevated in the thread that shouldn't have been, as well as comment threads that you think were not elevated but should have been. The only way we could attempt to identify the root cause of this problem is if you present the cases you're referring to.

You can change the sorting to new? Also are you using discussion or chronological view?

Just use recent like almost all real forums do.

Meaningful discussing and debating does not take place on the boards.
