Question for Board Moderator Team

Have any of you considered hosting a private community driven discussion board? There are numerous options for both free and paid hosting services, some of which offer some pretty advanced customization capabilities.

Here is one free example: https://www.phpbb.com/ This one even has a fairly active development community that builds extensions for community use.

Personally, content quality and curation aside, I am not a fan of the reddit format and would be happy to see a new home for discussions where I can see more than 2 topics at a time.

We've had a few conversations, but, ultimately, such a thing isn't super likely at this point in time (short of keeping the Moderation Discord up and my own personal Design/Concept Discord). I know if I were to do something like that it would probably end up very different from the Boards, and I'm not sure that's something people were interested in -- let alone that I'd have to build a new moderation team for a smaller community.

Thanks for copying your response over here. I didn't think to put it under this section until Kai Guy's response (derp). I for one would definitely prefer that something live on in this format. Reddit is fine and all if you're just surfing memes, but the format of it is so hard on the eyes when you're trying to look for actual discussions you're interested in.

I don't know how much support there would be for something like this either, but I would hope there would be some support for it, and with a better toolbox available to the moderation team maybe it could be even better. What I do know is that if any of you are considering something like that, you have less than a week to get it off the ground. Once the boards are gone, it's unlikely you'll be able to garner a big enough community to seed the new forum.

Given that timeframe it is even less likely, yes. I don't think any of us are really ready to try to put something together on this short a notice. Some of us (like myself) have Discord communities we may retreat to, and others may simply go do their own things.

I recommend ya add some of the folks ya like. In game community is nice as well.

I'm no expert at that sort of thing and my work takes me away from the internet for extended periods of time so I cannot do something like that. I also know the consequences of a private run forum that doesn't have official backing (ask anyone that was a member of the GD community when the transition from the forums to the boards was made). If someone chooses to attempt to do so, I will gladly assist best I can, but I don't see that being likely at this time.

I too hate the Reddit format and would prefer a forum format so hopefully there is something out there for us. I'll be on Discord until such a thing is found.

I'm a programmer, and I was working on this since they announced it. Sadly Riot doesn't offer OAUth authentication (main reason I stopped in my tracks) and this is no way for a third-party website to properly verify a summoner to a user. (Although I am trying stuff with icons and bot games however it is impossible to be 100% sure that it's a certain summoner so due to that alone logins would be difficult) and I would even do it for free to keep a nice place for the good members. Though moderation would be a priority (no offence to mods a lot of them were good, the boards dying is mainly riot's fault but there was a noticeable lack of deletion of low quality posts and such) if anyone is interested or has ideas my discord is Steven4547466#1407

I ran one off of phpbb a long long time ago for a guild in another game. The more robust stuff obviously can take a long time to flesh out, but getting a basic platform out there to use with section and what have you can be done in a couple of hours. I don't think Riot would ever add a way for external sites to verify summoner identity. Those closest thing would have be me manual verification. You'd have some badge or status on your account that flags it as "verified". Verification would basically involve pressing a button to create a task for a moderator to message you in-game. The moderator provides a code, you PM the code back to the moderator (or submit it somewhere) and the moderator ticks the flag on the forum. Definitely not ideal, but if you wanted that kind of feature, that's likely all you'd have to work with as like you said there's no third party authentication from Riot. That said, I don't think it's an immediate necessity for a new home for the boards, especially not on such short notice.

Yeah I see that, but a lot of companies (I half expected it when League accounts were merged into Riot Accounts) like discord, google (anything you see a sign in with) uses some form of OAuth and it'd be a really cool feature to have.

I believe at least one third-party site asked you to change the name of a rune page to a unique identifier and then queries one of the more popular Summoner Look-Up sites to see if the name used matches. This may no longer be possible with the new rune system though.

I was thinking changing your icon to one of the default icons that you don't already use within a short time frame. It'd be easy if you could read summoner status with the API, but I haven't found a way to do that.

Is there no longer a "third party verification code" that users can put in to settings and then be queried through the API? Could've sworn there was one.
