Bloodthirster Life steal not working on graves?

I had Graves level 2 with a blood thirster, warmogs, and rageblade. I had always noticed the healing with warmogs on graves in a fight but it seemed like there was 0 healing with blood thirster. Is Graves attack considered a skill and not an auto, ergo would need the hextech blade item to heal with?
