Keep running out of mana

So I've started to use more mana-intensive champs like Swain, Jayce and Maokai. But problem seems to be I keep getting low-mana.

This has been my problems for a while, and I just need to know if there a way to preserve my mana that doesn't require going back to get a tear on 1st buy or starting with a flask.

If you're quickly running out of mana, it means you're spamming your spells too much. Manage your mana pool better and only use your spells if you have a good reason to (ex: you can deal dmg to an enemy, you need to wave clear so you can recall, etc).

Try not spamming your abilities as much in lane, and if your getting minions with abilities just keep in mind your using mana. Its all about mana conservation and knowing what you want to do with the mana that you have.

Lanekai is pretty good with Catalyst into RoA. Just don't spam sapling as much (he had problems with that before the changes, too, which is why it's suggested to use Q instead).

Jayce can do well with item 3508

Many mana intensive champions have mana returning abilities, for instacen jayce with his hammer form W and swain with his passive. Harass the enemy enough so that they're too scared to come near you and then use those passives.

But honestly, flask OR tear first buy is pretty important, especially tear; so that you can accumulate stacks earlier. Chalice is another item that ap mids go for if they need mana regen or MR.

Another thing: don't use your abilities to farm. While last hitting with a mage is much harder than last hitting with an AD champ because the margin of error is smaller(have to wait until there is barely a sliver on the minion), you've got to learn how.

Micro-manage your resources and keep track of your mana at all times and decide the best time to use it

item 1076 x 2

and good last hitting skills.

Emphasis on good cs'ing on Cho'Gath or Swain. They get mana back from their passives.

It's supposed to be a limiting factor on your abilities (which is why people start with flask and go back and buy tear). Simply don't use your abilities as much early unless you have to.
